More Eau than Magnolia

Magnolia trees are so gorgeous. Their scent is really lovely, too, but most perfume versions don't quite capture it. Often they're either too sour and lemony, or they smell like some generic blend of flowers and not magnolia specifically.

This is no exception. Well, it's not lemony or generic, but it only smells very marginally of magnolia. It's first and foremost a L'Eau d'Issey flanker. I don't have the original here to compare, but Eau & Magnolia reminds me a lot of how I remember it. It has the same mix of creaminess and cleanliness with lots of lily and lily of the valley. They're not even listed for this flanker, but I can clearly smell them, more than any of the listed notes. While the original can feel a little screechy at times, this one is softer and lighter. It's dewy like a flower in a freshwater pond. I suppose there is a light magnolia accord to soften the composition. In the beginning, I also get a refreshing minty note that makes the florals feel less dense. All in all, it's definitely a spring and summer scent, like most Issey Miyake perfumes.

The old L'Eau d'Issey is more distinct and original, even though it never worked for me because I'm not a big fan of lily of the valley. Eau & Magnolia is pleasant and easier to wear, but doesn't really wow me.

The Beauty Of Dewy Water

If you register on the website of the stylist Issey Miyake, a sample of the perfumes of their brand arrives at your home for free, and in this case, the latest news. I have just taken out of the mailbox a small black envelope containing this splendid composition: Eau & Magnolia and Eau & Cèdre. If you are curious like me, let’s find out together what they are.

Eau & Magnolia is a classic backdrop of musk and sandalwood, topped with a dominant and sensual magnolia supported by bitter neroli. Dewy, fresh, floral. Intoxicating. The essence unfolds with dewy, slightly acidic and floral accords, mostly aquatic like the water of a stream but not salty like the water of the sea. I can smell the magnificent white magnolia petals from the initial spray. Bloom Eau de Parfum is the first thing that jumps to my mind smelling this mischievous note of magnolia. The bergamot intensifies the slightly lemony aspect of the flower, while an abundant handful of neroli adds a hint of bitterness and soapyness.

In the heart, the fragrance turns to a more watery aspect, and the fleshy and thick white petal is now soaked, filled with misty drops of water, like the early morning flower covered in the moist dew of the night. I don’t get the rose, perhaps the other opulent flowers obfuscate it. The water aspect is fresh, clear, and dewy, like a morning rain or a still lake, aquatic but salty.

A creamy sandalwood accord appears on the bottom and clean white musks help to balance the final accord. The dry-down. however, is more on the mossy side than the woody one.

Harsh, humid, and practically linear, the fragrance does not undergo notable changes, from opening to dry-down. It is a pleasant late spring / early summer scent, good for any daytime occasion, from morning until late afternoon. Again, despite being a flanker, the perfume does not recall the original L'Eau d'Issey Eau de Toilette. If I have to be honest, this variant looks more like #issey pure, also because it has many notes in common with that fragrance. Longevity is average, while projection is good for the first hour, and definitely, this one projects more than its masculine counterpart.

I base the review on a couple of samples I have owned since June 2022.

South Sea feeling & midsummer night's dream

Sprayed on and submerged as a mermaid in the depths of the sparkling fresh ocean.

Skin dried by the last warm rays of the sun at sunset, caressed by the summer wind and kissed by the delicate night blossoms.

Floating to the nightly hula party as an island fairy with blossom and wind in her hair, moving her hips to the music with good humor and sensuality until the clear, fresh morning.

Danced home along the beach in the summer rain. At home in a four-poster bed with freshly laundered bed linen. And while the white sheets of my four-poster bed move in the morning wind to the distant sounds of hula, I close my eyes and a gentle breeze lingers in my nose, with memories of a dreamlike tropical night with a South Sea feeling.
