Mediocrity made by L'Oréal - really not worth it

"Black Opium" - a new scent by YSL? It would be better to openly declare on the package that it's a product by L'Oreal. The marketing people have tried very hard to make the most of a legend, but the result is a flanker which smells like a cross of "La Vie est belle", "Flowerbomb" and "Si" with a touch of coffee. Mediocrity, here you come. The bottle is from cheap-looking plastic and doesn't impress me much. Staying-power is good, but that's the only positive thing I have to say about this kind of horror from France. A loud, coarse and chemical scent capable of turning me into a perfume-hater.

Stereotypical YSL

Only the name and bottle design reminded of glorious Opium brand, everything else is different. This is just another contemporary uber sweet Manifesto clone. Inspiration as usual was find in legendary Angel. Some mocca, lots of glucose and patchouli, fair amount of vanilla and voila... Black Opium is served. Not bad but already done and stereotypical.

doll’s blood-jam and sticky toilet flowers

Black Opium smells like someone squeezed Strawberry Shortcake’s sweet freckled face until the top of her plastic molded head popped off and they smeared the cloying, syrupy ichor that dribbled out all over their body, and then they rolled around in a heap of rotting jasmine that reached the point in the flower's lifespan where the blooms stop smelling beautiful and immediately start to smell like a cracked bucket of pee-stained underwear. Thus adorned in a doll’s blood-jam and sticky toilet flowers, the individual boldly assures themselves they are sexy as hell and heads out to the club. Oh, to have the confidence of a person wearing one of the world’s shittiest perfumes.

Smells like being drunk as fuck in New York City, stealing drags off of someone's off-brand menthol 100 and reading tarot cards at the bar. Little whiffs of it clung to the collar of my coat and followed me and my hangover around all the next day- little bursts of sweetness fading in and out, still-frames from a night that I couldn't quite remember all the way. A sexy, trashy, sugarbomb covered in glitter and mascara smears- I literally don't know what this smells like when it's not mixed with an ambient miasma of cigarette smoke, but if you wanna be the hottest girl loitering outside the door to the dive bar, there you go.

Dark, sensual, roasted coffee sweetened by a vanilla base

Clearly has been overhyped by social media, but still one of the better designer fragrance I've smelled recently. Very sweet, fresh and uplifting floral orange blossom blast (thankfully, it doesn't have that marshmallow vibe) paired with a small kick of spiciness. Starts settling into a coffee scent. The coffee note is well-balanced: it has that delicious roasted, dark vibe to it, but never goes bitter, probably because of the jasmine. There's a slight powderiness at the edge of the scent. The scent starts getting more sweet with a pungent patchouli behind. Adds a darker, more sensual vibe to it, which makes it better for night's out and colder temperatures.

I'm not a fan of coffee, so this is the main reason why it won't be making it into my collection. It's a fine fragrance, but nothing extraordinary or blind-buy worthy. Some people seem to be unable to pick up all of the notes listed here, but my skin chemistry seemed fine with it. Coffee is probably the biggest note for me, but it might be different for you. Test it out before succombing to the social media hype!

The 2010s party girl in me wants to defend this, but upon revisiting, I barely smell anything. Kinda tropical, surprisingly. I feel BETRAYED

Loud, synthetic La Vie est Belle, but with added fruit jam and skunky beer. Hurts my head! Mostly useful for military purposes, I suspect.

Used to wear this a lot but it’s somehow become cloying to me, plus I smell it a lot. The Patchouli can be too much for some.

Starts off with a bag of just pear jelly beans. After that, it's warm, floral, a little coffee. Glad I tried for free; too strong for me.
