What's that smell? It smells like......everything.......
For a minute, let's just disregard the massive hate that has surrounded this release.
Yes, it's the 14th or 15th flanker of L'homme.
Yes, it has a massively redundant name.
Yes, YSL has disappointed in the past. And on and on and on...
But put that aside for a moment, and let's take a look at this juice objectively.
On the initial spray, it opens up like a shower gel version of L’homme. It’s INCREDIBLY generic to the point of almost making you want to cry out in exasperation, "Noooooooooooo! NOT AGAIN!!!" But the L’homme backbone is clearly there for a few seconds. Suddenly, it takes a turn towards LNDL Eau Electrique, with a tonka-ish sweetness coming out. A few more minutes in, Invictus Aqua (2018) starts peeking out from behind the shower curtain asking blithely, "room for one more?" Big smile. Sure, why not. Why the ______ not.
Finally, when everything has settled down at the 15 minute mark, the lavender in Cologne Bleu makes it smell very similar to Diesel Bad. Coupled with the marine notes and sandalwood from Invictus Aqua, and the apple, geranium and tonka from Eau Electrique, you get an incredibly mass appealing and forgettable mishmash of overly done nonsense. The far drydown continues to bounce between all 4 scents, but doesn't mask the overall intention - that this is essentially YSL's answer to capitalizing on the hype generated by Invictus Aqua.
It’s smooth, it’s aromatic, it’s slightly sweet and it smells like an Invictus Aqua take on Diesel Bad, with a lingering nod to Eau Electrique in the background. If you were to give this as a gift to a man, they would probably say “Wow, thanks! I now smell like a person.”
So if you're an enthusiast, I can see why this could be a massive disappointment. After all, Cologne Bleu just smells like a bunch of other popular things mixed together. What else is new these days? But heck, perhaps this is the first fragrance you’ve EVER smelled, in which case it could possibly be the GREATEST thing since adolescent horniness. You could definitely do worse. But IMO, you can DEFINITELY do better.
Scent – 6.5/10
Longevity – 6.5/10
Projection – 6/10
Overall – 6/10 - if the word "generic" had a smell...
