Pirates on an Ego Trip
With the name "Flibustier," I initially thought of an exotic, Caribbean blend that could feature fruity, rum-like, and possibly tobacco notes. A gunpowder accord, like that found in Amazingreen by Comme de Garcon, wouldn’t have been out of the question either.
That may have been more of a wishful thought, but it would have fit well into the concept.

However, the perfumer of "Flibustier" seemingly wanted to avoid experiments and opted for more conventional ingredients.

For "Flibustier" sets sail with rather fruity, not overly bright, but still finely rounded fragrance notes. And hardly has one a handful of water under the keel when the spice notes make themselves known from the storage room - foremost among them is the cinnamon, which here pushes itself to the forefront in a dominant yet balanced manner. There is an undeniable resemblance to Chanel's Egoiste. For its wearers, "Flibustier" is guaranteed to be a welcome extension or fragrant alternative.

But like my predecessor, I also discover a few herbal nuances in the background that come off a bit scratchy and generally slightly unharmonious. I suspect that nutmeg, vetiver, and moss may not fit together perfectly in the overall composition. Yet, at the latest in the soft base note, the waves are smoothed out again, and one finds inner peace.

All in all, "Flibustier" is a fine fragrance that you won’t encounter in every dive bar. The approach is fundamentally successful, although the concept hasn’t completely convinced me. Perhaps I secretly miss the desired ingredients mentioned above and find myself thinking too often of festive times. One option is to spray the fragrance on textiles, as it conveys a more harmonious impression in my opinion.

Curse of the Caribbean
The smoke was so thick that he could hardly see anything. Their attack had come so quickly that none of the crew had the chance to hesitate. As always, he was swept away by the shouting and screaming, by the gunpowder smoke, by the collision of the ship hulls, where the wood creaked and groaned like a tortured giant. Not that he had been particularly brave - perhaps dulled by past battles - but not brave. It was rather the sheer fight for survival, for loot, with which the next days could be spent carefreely, but also the lack of alternatives that had driven him from France to Tortuga, the Caribbean nest of pirates. Perhaps today was his last day, the last day of a miserable life, always beyond a dignified existence, always beyond morality and law.

Buccaneers were French and partly English pirates in the Caribbean of the 17th century. On the small island of Tortuga, they established a veritable pirate republic and plundered mainly Spanish ships and settlements in Latin America from there. They were known for being particularly daring and fearless.

The image of privateers and corsairs seems to be a good choice for a men's fragrance. Movies like "Curse of the Caribbean" continue to captivate not only young boys. There must be something to the idea of the free, daring fighter that still fascinates today. The reality was far less glorious, as can be easily studied in the relevant sources.

Like most fragrances from the traditional perfume manufacturer Galimard from the southern French perfume town of Grasse, this one is also not easy to grasp. The top note initially holds no big surprises. The lemon and lavender are clearly recognizable, which are largely typical for men's fragrances, especially traditional men's scents. The bergamot, which I perceive here rather subtly, is also a classic of masculine compositions.

However, it becomes significantly more exciting: The heart note is dominated by a strong pinch of cinnamon, which stands in a certain contrast to the equally recognizable nutmeg. The two spices represent a certain exoticism; I associate the spice route, a sea route to India, which in the 15th and 16th centuries ensured that high profits were made through trade, colonial trade began, and thus the desirability of corsairs and privateers was awakened. Both components seem to be fighting with each other. Sometimes one prevails, sometimes the other, as if they do not want to connect properly. A hint of pepper might also be in play, but it could also be the nutmeg that provides this certain sharpness when one brings the nose very close to the skin. One might even think of gunpowder smoke, of spicy smoke that does not smell unpleasant and yet slightly irritates the nose.

After a while, however, the base note unfolds: The gunpowder smoke dissipates, the view becomes clear again, the rough sea is behind us, the land is reached. A soft herbal and mossy note evokes longing for home, vanilla and vetiver bring back memories of the past privateering voyage, yet they are not quite harmoniously connected, as the somewhat sour, woody note of vetiver competes with the sweetness of vanilla.

Perhaps it is precisely these contrasts that make it so easy for the wearer to perceive, distinguish, and categorize all components in this fragrance: Especially lavender, cinnamon, nutmeg, moss, and vanilla are clearly recognizable from beginning to end and create a tension-filled, almost exciting progression.

However, less convincing is the fact that apparently scent accents were chosen that do not always harmonize well together, making the fragrance appear a bit uneven. This may have been intentional, or perhaps it happened without intention.

Those who embrace it will receive an unusual fragrance that is clearly recognizable as a derivative of the Galimard family of scents and yet is unique in a certain way. Flibustier has always reminded me a bit of Opium pour homme by Yves Saint Laurent, but after the top note fades, it develops quite differently. This is not a wild curse of the Caribbean, but also not a romanticized pirate, but a guy with edges and corners. And that should certainly be understood as a compliment in today's mainstream fragrance market.

Galimard also drew inspiration from classic men's fragrances (Fougère): warm, sweet oriental, with cinnamon and patchouli.

Spicy, fresh scent that lifts your spirits. It lacks the wildness of a free spirit.

Appealing concept - but unfortunately missed due to conventional ingredients. And even those could have been better blended.
