Pirates on an Ego Trip
With the name "Flibustier," I initially thought of an exotic, Caribbean blend that could feature fruity, rum-like, and possibly tobacco notes. A gunpowder accord, like that found in Amazingreen by Comme de Garcon, wouldn’t have been out of the question either.
That may have been more of a wishful thought, but it would have fit well into the concept.
However, the perfumer of "Flibustier" seemingly wanted to avoid experiments and opted for more conventional ingredients.
For "Flibustier" sets sail with rather fruity, not overly bright, but still finely rounded fragrance notes. And hardly has one a handful of water under the keel when the spice notes make themselves known from the storage room - foremost among them is the cinnamon, which here pushes itself to the forefront in a dominant yet balanced manner. There is an undeniable resemblance to Chanel's Egoiste. For its wearers, "Flibustier" is guaranteed to be a welcome extension or fragrant alternative.
But like my predecessor, I also discover a few herbal nuances in the background that come off a bit scratchy and generally slightly unharmonious. I suspect that nutmeg, vetiver, and moss may not fit together perfectly in the overall composition. Yet, at the latest in the soft base note, the waves are smoothed out again, and one finds inner peace.
All in all, "Flibustier" is a fine fragrance that you won’t encounter in every dive bar. The approach is fundamentally successful, although the concept hasn’t completely convinced me. Perhaps I secretly miss the desired ingredients mentioned above and find myself thinking too often of festive times. One option is to spray the fragrance on textiles, as it conveys a more harmonious impression in my opinion.
