Oud and Rose done right
I have watched ATHs videos since a long time and he is one of my favourite Youtube reviewers, both for his perfume unicorn brain and for the way he presents perfumes.

When I tested the first time Onyx I was impressed how the rose is not extremely feminine like in perfumes like "Portrait of a lady" which I do not like at all. The oud combination with vanilla, plum and patchouli really does a great job here and makes this perfume mysterious and long lasting.

The packaging looks very stylish and is of very good quality, the bottle has this nice black matte finish and has a magnetic cap, the price is high but you get a great looking bottle with awesome perfume inside.

It has similarities with Noir de Noir from Tom Ford and 500 years from Etat Libre dOrange but unfortunately those are only at the beginning and after 20 minutes both Tom Ford and Etat Libre are flying away, becoming only a skin scent. But ONYX stays present and projects like a beast for 4, 5 hours then stays noticeable up to 10 hours on the clothes.

The perfume starts with a blast of very high quality rose, which will stay present for the whole longevity of the perfume, even in dry-down. A few minutes after, you can feel the oud, very friendly type of wood, not animalic at all .. which makes the scent become darker and masculine.

I like to wear two sprays of this lovely perfume, one on the skin and one on the clothes, in this way it will stay present for a whole day.

If Maison Francis Kurkdjian´s famous Satin Mood is like walking in a garden of roses, this one is for me as if you have a nice luxurious bouquet of fresh cut roses on your table and you get whiffs of that smell constantly.

It is unisex, I see it more for people 30+ who can appreciate the art of this perfume and it can be worn in any occasion. But more suitable for a romantic setting because the mix of rose, oud and chocolate might have an aphrodisiac effect.

The great Onyx of 2023.
Hi,

Those who follow me will know that I have recently been picking up quite a few of Aaron’s fragrances as he sells them with a friendly 10ml bottle that allows you to get a good price for good quality products.

He recently announced that he would be stopping selling a number of his products and in that list was Onyx. However, he also announced that he would be having a 40% off sale for a few of his fragrances.

When I saw there was a plum note in this I knew i had to get a 50ml because if I ended up loving it to be left with only a 10ml bottle, I would have kicked myself for not picking up the 50ml, which was included in the 40% off sale, which only applied to the 50ml bottles at the time.

Before we get in to the smell of this I have to mention just how amazing the 50ml bottles are. The atomiser along with the pressurised bottle is amazing, I have never seen anything like it anywhere else prior to when I got my 50ml of his also to be discontinued, Maverick. It’s like this very fine mist particles of fragrance with so much pressure that you can hold that atomiser button down for so long, and it still continues to spray a very fine narrow angle so it’s not spraying past the edges of your wrists or arms for example, and to top that off it comes with a lovely magnetic cap which we all like a bottle to have lol. I am going to make a video on the atomiser and bottle to start accompanying my reviews along with adding them to previous reviews as well as future reviews, because I know this is not my last purchase from this amazing house.

Let’s get on to the thing you are all here for, the smell of this beautiful fragrance. As someone who has only recently started my niche collection after I bought more than enough designer fragrances, oud is relatively new to me. There is only one bad experience I have had with it, and I know I will catch some flack for this but also some sympathy as others have posted about sharing the same sort of experience. Yes it’s Xerjoff Alexandria II where I had a physical reaction of feeling sick from the smell when I first tried it. Please bare with me though before you leave as I often take the sample out when there are visitors to get their opinion, and it is mostly like mine for first time smelling it. I have however noticed that with the more times I take it out for a spray, I seem to be getting used to it. I know you’re wondering why I am bringing this up when talking about Onyx. The reason is there is a stage in Onyx that smells remarkably like Alexandria II just less powdery but other than that it is the exact same smell, and I don’t know if it is the lack of powder or because I have been getting used to the sample I take out every so often which has lead to me being able to enjoy that kind of smell when it comes in Onyx. Maybe I will spray Alexandria II one day and be able to fully enjoy it because i do love the dry down.

Now that I’ve got that out of the way let’s delve in to the rest of what Onyx has to offer.

The opening. I was very surprised with it, because to me this smells so much like a real rose has been presented to me, and the reason for my surprise is because Aaron has said in his videos that when using rose absolute, he likes to manipulate it to smell more like a sweet jam kind of smell, but here it is unmistakably the smell of a real rose. Along with it comes the smell of oud which doesn’t seem to bother me at all in this fragrance. Somehow it adds to the feeling of the rose being real and you are standing in a garden that has had fertiliser put down and I don’t mean that it smells like manure in bad way.

After a while the rose starts to give way and this chocolate smell appears in its place, which again smells like real chocolate. You still have the smell of oud with you, but the smell of vanilla and plum begins to move in also, creating a sweet, almost gourmand scent which is not a sickly overly sweet kind of smell from the likes of Vicious Cacao, but more like his Maverick fragrance which feels so natural and delicious, but not in a way that will leave you craving a sticky, sweet treat that will destroy your summer diet you have been on.

Performance. I put this on last night and 13+ hours later I am still smelling reminders that i wore this yesterday, even though I have sprayed on Bleu De Chanel EDP this morning.

Projection is great a 10/10

Bottle is a 10’/10 (video coming)

Price. Now this is a problem because although there is a 40% off sale it is being discontinued and Aaron has stated he is not delivering to anywhere outside of the UK until he sorts out a better deal with a courier. He has said in a live stream last week that he hopes to have this sorted by November at the latest, but to keep an eye out at Maxaroma and PerfumeUSA I believe the 2nd outlet was which he spoke of.

Scent is a 9.5/10 as I wish the chocolate was dialled back just a bit, but it doesn’t last long before the vanilla and plum kicks in. It’s a nightmare to try get a .5 when using your phone to rate things so even though it says 10/10 my actual score is 9.5.

This would be great for many occasions. Summer nights are fine but the chocolate stage may be a bit much for some in hotter parts of the world. It will definitely be fine for all other seasons though.

Enjoy

High quality and addicting stuff!
I finally got my nose on it as Aaron being so generous to give out a free 10ml of my choice plus a free 30ml of the Fake when I purchased a 50ml of it. You know what....I LOVE it so much. I don’t know why there is so much hate of it on Fragrantica. I think some people just criticize his fragrances based on his personality, not the juices themselves. For me, I care the most about the juices he creates, though I also respect what he does and his genuine reviews of other fragrances even he sometimes criticized some of my favorite fragrances. I’m totally ok with it as I think scents are very personal and subjective and I respect them.

Back to the Onyx. I now know what real natural and concentrated oud smells like (I still love my Oud for Greatness even though now I know it contains very little to none of the real oud because it just smells super good). I found that I do love the animalic of the natural oud and I really appreciate the quality of it. This perfume has the jammy rose that playing so well together with the chocolaty patchouli and plum. Also the natural oud lasts all the way from the middle till the end of the whole duration. It’s divine quality (I think Alexandria II in my collection really contains good amount of natural oud too after comparing with Aaron’s creations). He is just so good at playing with the oud in different ways. Once I try his fragrances, I learn so much from them and know what are actually good. His fragrances are just so different and high quality. You just need to find something that matches your tastes because they’re really DIFFERENT comparing to other more well known niche houses.

Performance wise, it is superb. My skin tends to eat perfumes as I always get less longevity than other people but interestingly this one last super long on my skin,12+ hours or days on clothes. Projection on me is crazy too. On his website he suggested to use 8-12 sprays so I started with 8. OMG! My husband said he could even smell me from 3 feet away after 5 hours of application and his nose usually doesn’t detect fragrances very well. I think I will to use less sprays from now.

P.S. I also got 10ml of the Ambré Extrême, Oud, Oxytocin and a 30ml of Fake. Honestly I love all of them but not as much as Onyx and Ambré Extrême, which is my another favorite from him. I am sure I will get a 50ml of the Ambré Extrême when I am almost done with the 10ml. I’m not gonna do full reviews on any of these as I don’t want to make this review to be too long but I know I will try more of his stuffs very soon.

Old wooden outhouse with rose airfreshner
This gives me an old wooden outhouse (probably the oud) with a flower airfreshner, mainly rose.
It's really well blended. But I don't enjoy the scent. I expected so much more from this.
It is described as highly sensual and dark.
Dark? Yes, in an old wooden outhouse in a forest dark. Sensual, naah i don't know. It turns kind of chocolaty, eventualy....but that is like 2-3 hours in. So no, I can't stand the opening.
But who knows, mayby it will grow on me.

A Beast
The scent is original, sexy, and is the only one I have ever put on a 8AM one day and I can clearly smell it on my skin the following morning. The rose and oud combination is exquisite. I only find it slightly sweet and I get the green note in the base which I guess is the patchouli. The rose note isn't over floral and the oud isn't too animalistic. Not an everyday fragrance for me but definitely something I would wear on a night out.

An addictive rose and soft oud scent with dark chocolate and patchouli in the opening. The drydown is a creamy sandalwood with a musky rose.

Similar to Alujain by Kajal but less dirty, sweeter and overall a more pleasant scent.

TF Noir de Noir, stronger, with o/d of Norlimbanol / Ambrocenide / AmberMax. ATH saying he never smelled Noir de Noir is absurd.
