Animalic freshie
Have you ever wondered what would happen if you took a classic fresh/spicy composition with a citrusy opening and pumped it with civet? Annick Ménardo and Christopher Chong have wondered about the same thing, and thus Figment Man was born. This discontinued beast embodies the true meaning of niche, as it bends the rules of perfumery.

A mix of lemon, pepper and civet creates a sour, spicy and a slightly pissy sensation in the opening. That said, it's incredibly fresh at the same time. The overall scent profile reminds me of something between freshly-squeezed lemon juice and leaves on a dormant fig tree. It's acidic, green and a bit sweet. The animalic nuance ties everything together.

The sourness never goes away, but after 30 minutes, Figment starts drying down to a base of vetiver and a magnificent earthy smell of garden soil. You could think of it as an earthier Terre d'Hermès Eau de Toilette with some civet - a Terre d'Civet, if you will. Along with woodiness, there's labdanum in the drydown, providing leathery warmth and muskiness.

When it comes to the claims that this scent is best enjoyed in solitude; I can't attest to that. In the air, it smells like an orangery or a greenhouse; and those are positive associations in my mind. While the performance is better than your average freshie, the projection is soft, which makes for a light, invigorating wear. Perfect for spring, summer and fall.

The Rite of Spring
A bassoon punctures the silence. It plays an awkward, stilted melody in a register that is unnatural and too high. A French horn offers a strange counterpoint, and then clarinets enter playing harmony in the wrong key.

This is a description of the first few measures of The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky, a piece so weird and unconventional to the late Victorian age public that it caused a literal riot at its first performance. Yet not even 20 years later, it was featured as one of the classical pieces in Fantasia, a Disney animation for children. Even though it is avant-garde and unorthodox, The Rite of Spring has this magnetic quality that keeps it a beloved classic among classical music fans, especially those who watched and enjoyed Fantasia as children.

What does all this have to do with Figment Man? Well, it is also avant-garde and unorthodox. It also deals in terms of the natural and unnatural, of death and life. And it also has this magnetic quality that shines through even though it is not necessarily appealing to smell.

The unappealing bit is undoubtedly the castoreum note. It comes through almost on first spray, and it is a doozy. Harsh and almost fecal, it is a real animalic note, not something buried under tons of florals in a chypre, or hidden and held back in a modern Western interpretation of oud. But the beauty is in how it is dealt with in this fragrance. It is not held back but supported by wonderful woods and citruses and florals. It is like a dish that features an ingredient that you are not really a fan of, but the composition makes it not only palatable, but outright enjoyable. Or like the polytonal chords of Stravinsky's Rite which don't sound good on their own, but in context, they are sublime.

Then come the earthy tones. Others compare it to Terre d'Hermès Eau de Toilette, and I can see that; I get a bit of Guilty Absolute pour Homme which is even better. Deep woody and earthy notes that provide support and backbone for the animalics and florals to stand on.

What a creation. I wish I had picked up a bottle when it was available at discounters. I'm not going to spend over $500 only for my wife to wrinkle her nose and ask me why I smell like I just came back from shoveling manure and dirt in a forest. My opinion on discontinuation: a real shame, but completely understandable. I'm not sure what infinitesimally small number of non-enthusiasts walking into a perfume shop will spray this on a strip and immediately think, "I need this," but it is closer to 0% than 1%.

Is there anywhere where Figment Man is appropriate to wear? No. Will you get any compliments? Most likely the opposite: complaints. Don't mind them; they are those poor Victorian fools at the Rite premiere who haven't yet understood the magic.

You are getting something for the money
So, LOVE or HATE. 2 words.

I like this one when I feel too generic to wear my other perfumes.
When I feel like standing out, I wear this one. The opening is the part where scares me a tiny bit sometimes, but the more I wear it, the more I get used to that wet soily opening.

The drydown is smooth woods with tiny hint of that soily opening - touch of vetiver vibes too.
This is what Amouage is famous for, loves to stick to the roots - Daring, Complex, Driving away from the market, Bringing something new to the table. You will really get something "Amouagey" with Figment Man. It will take you on a journey whether you like it or not.

I wear it after a heavy rainfall on a morning, while you smell the wet grassy leaves everywhere.
Sample it!

Masterpiece or?
Recently, I got my hands on a discontinued gem - Amouage Figment Man. A friend gave it to me to sell, since he wasn’t using it. As a fragrance enthusiast who truly appreciates Amouage and their genuinely unique scents, there was no way I wasn’t going to try it myself.

Even though I didn’t like it at all upon first wear, I decided to give it 5-6 days. After all, Amouage fragrances are not made for one-night stands! On the first day, I noticed the citrusy opening, but soon after came the smell of soil and animalic accords – it literally felt like I had peed on the ground.

With each wear, though, I started to realize that the fragrance wasn’t nearly as bad as I had initially thought. In fact, several people even gave me compliments on it.

So, the fragrance opens with an aromatic-citrusy accord, and almost immediately, the animalic note kicks in. Somewhere around the time the citrus begins to fade and the animalic notes start to intensify, there's this light urinous scent that shows up, but it only lasts for about 3-4 minutes. After that, the heart unfolds beautifully, rich in vetiver and patchouli, supported by the same animalic warmth. There's also a mysterious note in the heart that I can't quite put my finger on, but it adds a lot of depth and intrigue to the whole composition.

In the dry-down, it becomes slightly sweet, soft, and maturely woody. I love the fact that this fragrance goes through radically different phases and transforms from something extremely difficult to wear into an actual masterpiece, just like some of the reviews describe it.

I completely understand the negative reviews, but I believe most people simply didn’t give it enough time to really dive into the scent. The animalic notes can be challenging – even intimidating for the average consumer.

Would you give a fragrance like this a chance?

Longevity is over 10 hours, and projection is moderate to strong in the beginning, later becoming more intimate and close to the skin, perfect for more personal moments.

Only Amouage can take a piece of dirt and make it art. An amazingly creative statement. Only for those who dare to challenge the status quo.
