Summer Meditations

“A song of salty incense, of mineral warmth and summer meditations, Lineage is the scent of travelling far from home to get closer to yourself." The olfactory class is categorized as Spicy Aquatic Mineral. This certainly breaks the mold of traditional summer inspired fragrances.

I was put off by the heady herbal opening, but found that this phase did not last long and later came to appreciate it. Olibanum and myrrh are obviously primary, but definitely detecting vetiver as the fragrance dries down gradually. The patchouli appears to be very faint, however there is a presence of benzoin that becomes more pronounced as Lineage progresses. In many ways I'm reminded of Akkad by Lubin, only with a mineral quality. Both note pyramids contain olibanum, patchouli and labdanum. They open much differently, but with a similar contrast. Lineage focuses on myrrh opposed to amber and vanilla.

It's funny how color plays a role in our perception of scent. If jade had a smell, I imagine this is what it would smell like. Amouage is always more than a fragrance, but an experience. I feel transported to someplace new and exotic with each sniff. The kind of place that's difficult to leave.

Seaside spa getaway

At first sniff, Lineage gives a quick blast of ginger, pepper, saffron, and something bright and green and slightly similar to eucalyptus. The top notes melt away quickly, revealing resins, fenugreek, and salty minerality. There's a faint, slightly sweet green note like cucumber in the drydown. The overall effect is less culinary and more like an expensive spa getaway. Although the notes listed may seem like a strange combination, each component is delicate and well-blended. Lineage is somehow both relaxing and invigorating, a beautiful fragrance for summer.

Paying homage to Poseidon

A fragrance from under the hand of Karine Vinchon-Spehner, who created my favorite perfumes for Amouage so far, namely Myths, Boundless, and Overture. I was quite skeptical about it at first; on paper it appeared as incense and by the first reviewers it was described as a marine fragrance. This caused some dissonance; moreover, neither one nor the other strand is among my favorites. However, I trusted the author and I will say that I was not disappointed and in fact very positively surprised.

The first puff, I sniffed and the beginning seemed very unpleasant: sweet, marine, even fishy. Then I thought: "what have I done, why did I need it?". However, it's a matter of a few minutes and there is a transition to the right scent and this one is downright fantastic! A very comfortable patchouli and sea fragrance, which vibrates with a gentle minerality known for example from Megamare (here, fortunately, in a light version). Frankincense, on the other hand, occurs deep in the background, making the scent create a mint-menthol bubble around us. A cool cooling effect that probably gets the job done on warmer days. In the deep base the patchouli becomes a bit more spicy. The fragrance could be described as a temple of Poseidon perched on a cliff washed by the waves of the Mediterranean. In short: my favorite among the brand's recent releases.

Salty meditation island

With the heat of late August Lineage is giving its best.
They wrote that it's not true, that it absolutely doesn't refer to a sun-baked beach, but it's very true:
at the beginning, the mineral and marine sensation given by pepper and saffron exactly personifies the strength of a flamboyant and untameable sea.
In the drydown a magnificent saline, creamy, amber and green sensation. It is the island of Lost made perfume, a non-place near Fiji. With some esoteric and mystical aspects (incense) too.
You have to recognize when a nose creates exactly what it was commissioned to do, and here too... Spehner, like Bish with purpose, have succeeded perfectly. What art!!!!

Amouage Lineage - a nice frankincense fragrance with culinary spices.

Lineage is another fragrance from Amouage that share the same DNA as Jubilation and Interlude. This perfume also appears to revolve around the same Omani frankincense that Amouage is famous for. As I am sampling a few Amouage scents this week, I feel like I am writing the same review with just the notes changed.

Lineage opens with a strong set of culinary spices, such as ginger, Sichuan pepper and saffron. It also has Schinus Molle, a Peruvian pink pepper that I am not familiar with. This could be the turmeric note I smell. The ginger and saffron add a hint of sweetness, but the opening is distinctly culinary. To top it all, there is fenugreek from the middle notes that seeps into the opening. The frankincense and myrrh in the middle notes imparts the typical Amouage incense personality to this perfume. The middle notes transition to a similar set of incense notes such as frankincense resinoid, myrrh resinoid, labdanum, and benzoin. The list also includes patchouli and vetiver but all the base notes are too soft and mellow to pick the notes apart. I am not sure why the frankincense essence in middle notes and frankincense resinoid are listed separately. Don’t they smell the same?

The longevity and sillage are very excellent, typical of Amouage perfumes. I can smell the frankincense and myrrh on my skin even after twelve hours.

The intense culinary herbal opening makes it absolutely critical that this perfume is tested on skin before purchase. Unfortunately I cannot tolerate culinary spices - coriander, cilantro, fenugreek, oregano, turmeric, cumin etc - in my perfumes. It is definitely a personal dislike, but something worth watching out for.

To summarize, Amouage Lineage is made of high quality ingredients and performs very well. This might appeal to you if you appreciate fenugreek, ginger and turmeric on your skin. It is not my cup of tea, just like Royal Tobacco, another fenugreek perfume from Amouage.
