(Not) a Fresh Breeze
I like the Godai series from the pseudo-Japanese cosmetics house Annayake. Each of the 4 fragrances is supposed to represent one of the 4 elements (water, earth, fire, air), and "Kogaï for Him / 戸外 | Annayake / アナヤケ" aims to embody air, which the manufacturer cheekily refers to as a Fougère in places. It is not that at all. Instead, this is a spicy-fresh scent that is well-suited for the office (though it could also work for everyday wear and sports).
I find it rather weak at the beginning: It starts off sour (rarely a good sign) and spicy and somewhat fresh. Pepper sets the tone here, accompanied by cardamom and cypriol (the elemiharz is only faint, and I can't detect the apple). It doesn't sound uninteresting, but unfortunately, it comes across as rather monotonous and boring.
However, the airy character develops over the course of the fragrance, gaining a slight citrus note (where from?, one wonders) and generally becoming lighter, more pleasant, and simply (a little) better. A somewhat ambry, floating quality evokes memories of "Le Gemme - Tygar | Bvlgari". The scent occasionally hints at "Sauvage (Eau de Toilette) | Dior," but remains distinctly spicier.
In terms of price-performance ratio, Annayake ranks high, yet the house's fragrances rarely feel cheap. After all, "Kogaï for Him / 戸外 | Annayake / アナヤケ" offers a solid performance of about 3 hours (good for an EdT and a fresh scent), with just over 6 hours until it reaches skin proximity.
The bottle is solid and possesses a certain beauty in its simplicity, but it is also absolutely nothing special. The pattern of the series fits well with the Japanese flair.
In conclusion: Do you need this fragrance?
Not necessarily. But it is a rather nice, pleasant fresh men's scent.
Does it bring new wind to the perfume shelf?
No.
