When Bogner fragrances still smelled "special" - darkened, green-tinged "Relax"
Strange. Really peculiar that all, truly all men's fragrances that in the 80s/90s followed the stylistic scent line of Sanders' "Background" and Davidoff's "Relax" no longer exist.

Even this beautiful original Bogner, virtually the original father of both aforementioned fragrances, is no more. Why?

A lovely veil of benzoin envelops all three. Then this fine, interesting note of woodruff comes into play.
Soapy and clean, the "Bogner" appears from the very beginning. Do aldehydes also play a certain role here?
The aromas above don’t suggest it, but that’s how the fragrance feels.

A fresh, slightly muted greenness defines the basic style, reminding me of the aforementioned, somewhat drier arranged woodruff.
Rosemary radiates - rather in the background - a slightly ethereal spiciness, while the middle part is dominated more by greenish flowers.

The hint of cinnamon at the top creates a nice tension, similar to what you find in Versace's classic "L'Homme." Just the right touch of sweet tenderness in the otherwise green-soapy-benzoin arrangement.

Particularly fine is the tobacco incorporated in the base, which, together with generously used oak moss and moderate fir, brings very beautiful, fresh-plant-like, slightly earthy and subtly woody notes that play wonderfully on the masculinity organ.

On par with "Relax" and "Background" in a stylistic triumvirate of those sadly departed....

Why only...
do perfume manufacturers so often take their best scents off the market and then follow up with so much triviality?

This is also the case here. "Bogner Man" is among my top 10 fragrances (well, since I've been on Parfumo, I should slowly make it a top 20). Maybe because I've known it for so long.

Shortly after its release in the mid-80s, it enjoyed almost cult status among me and my fragrance-savvy friends. Back then, we were mostly students, doing military or civil service, and could hardly afford this little potion. Those who did would provide the others with samples (no, not decants, just a drop on the wrist was all they gave). Luckily, the longevity was so strong that as the "gifted" one, you could enjoy it almost all day long.

There had been no scent like this for me back then, as I was just at the beginning of my fragrance journey. Green, woody, spicy, complex, yes mysterious, that's how it seemed to me, and that's how it still seems to me today when I occasionally take a drop from my two minis that I still have left.

With "Deep Forest," Bogner probably wanted to reconnect with this scent, which, to my knowledge, was also commercially quite successful. Well, "Deep Forest" smells similar, but still completely different. However, it has also become a very good scent, and by now, it has long been discontinued.

Willy, please release the old thing again in its original version. I would buy it by the pallet.

Legendary Status Well Deserved
Aside from the occasional mini, where you never know if it's gone bad, there are simply no more examples of the original Bogner from 1985. Not even for outrageous prices on eBay, like a Relax by Davidoff, the old Jil Sander fragrances, or an Envy by Gucci, which are somehow still available, somewhere. But here, there’s no chance, sorry 80s fans of this one true (along with the similar Deep Forest) Bogner scent. I also think a revival or reissue is out of the question, especially considering the sales policy of naming several fragrances over the decades the same or very similarly - which is nonsense and pure confusion, but we already know that from Jil Sander. Bogner Man (1985) is thus, so to speak, the myth among legends, and one could almost call it legendary. I simply call it fabulous, incredibly good, and I am proud to have received a sample from a dear Parfumo member.

Bogner Man cannot deny its time of origin, nor does it want to, nor does it need to. This classic has power, masculinity, style, cleanliness, and a touch of floral machismo - and not a little of it. The 3-5 people in the world who still own it as an OF with a spray head probably know that they don’t need many sprays. It is completely independent and yet totally 80s. It smells green, balsamic, soapy, strong. Really strong. It also reminds me of many women’s fragrances from back then (and even older) that had a similarly herbaceous and herbal character and also possessed that gentle, almost oriental-sweet core. A wonderful fragrance of international class, not just from the German drugstore! The scent certainly also contains many now-banned fragrance ingredients like oak moss, and you can feel it - I love it! Green moss, lots of forest and leaves, absolutely masculine flowers. How can one interpret flowers as so sexy and masculine, truly successful and bold. It is mostly woody, though. Oh, I’m getting carried away. That’s how it should be!

Bottle: not beautiful - but memorable and typically Bogner. Definitely nicer than the rainbow jackets of the German Olympic team from the beginning of the year in Russia.
Sillage: 80s power meets German feelings just before reunification.
Longevity: about 8 hours - and that’s despite the fact that it has been discontinued for what feels like decades and my sample probably has some years on it too.

Bogner's best, one of the best men’s fragrances of the 80s - and that era had quite a few. It’s a shame that it is so unknown internationally and that nothing more came from the brand afterwards.

What I also wanted to mention: I really love the international perfume community, like on YouTube. But no matter how much they celebrate all their Creeds, Roja Doves, or Xerjoffs there - classics like this Bogner or Relax, Background, and Feeling Man are totally unknown. They are missing out. They should educate themselves further here on Parfumo ;)

Tannöd is the Germans' Pleasure - Provincial in Forester Style
This first men's fragrance from the "alleged" fashion brand Bogner (the simple ski Willy with his money-hungry, ambitious, unsympathetic Brazilian wife Sonia) shows hardly any development, is flat in its projection, and smells pungent like Tannöd. No wonder it was quickly replaced by Deep Forest, which at least attempts to be a woody perfume. This here is an olfactory nuisance that was rightly removed from the scene, unpleasant, intrusive, one-dimensional and - I repeat - fir-sweet and flat. And then there's this color - the most hideous fir green - in such a dress Joy Fleming had to compete for Germany at the Grand Prix in 1975. Obviously, the Forester style warms the German heart and meets with international bewilderment, if it is even noticed at all.

Fragrance Composition
Absolutely beautiful and spot on, these comments! However, I am quite astonished by the information regarding the composition of the fragrance - in fact, shocked! The original from 1985 is characterized by a distinctly warm, spicy coumarin note. Surely, lemon also plays a role, but rather in the form of fresh bergamot. A clearly noticeable trace of lavender (the mild French variety) has also been completely overlooked. In combination with oakmoss, a distinct accord emerges, which many experts will successfully and rightly identify as a Fougère. Due to the potential allergenic and carcinogenic effects of oakmoss and coumarin (the somewhat herbaceous-sweet fragrance component from tonka bean, reminiscent of woodruff), the use of both ingredients has been heavily regulated in the USA and within the EU, forcing many perfumers to reformulate or even discontinue compositions. However, it is still possible to revive this fragrance by mixing the correct ingredients in the right proportions. I finally succeeded after 5 attempts and 4 failed tries. But only with the right ingredients - and not with the supposedly listed fragrance notes above.

For me, one of THE green reference fragrances. Deep green, cool, dark-woody with a cinnamon extra kick. Masculine yet stylish.

The damp-spicy air in BM's coniferous forest is cool, ethereal-refreshing, and mossy. Its green essence has a unique velvetiness.

A scent like dark green velvet. Gloomy firs, needle-soft forest floor, a flower here and there, mossy-herbaceous darkness. Good!

Dark green fir forest, cool even in heat. Slightly floral-herbaceous in the background, oak moss greets from the treetops. A refreshing scent. GOOD

Green, damp, cool, and mossy. Then the moment when the cinnamon lets the sun shine on the forest floor and takes you back to the 80s.

For me, this is still the best and most useful Bogner scent. It's not a great work of perfumery, but it has a high feel-good factor.

Back then, Dad's Signature. Lots of oak moss and fir, plus golden yellow lemon and a pinch of cinnamon. A dreamy classic.
