Near-perfect oud fragrance
After wearing this three times, I can conclude that it's probably my favorite straight-up oud fragrance I've tried so far. Its opening doesn't contain any stink or barnyardy notes - the head notes of the oud are masterfully offset by a bittersweet rose note. It's mercifully not powdery and jammy like rose accords in other oud fragrances (looking at you Oud Satin Mood Eau de Parfum and Ombre Nomade), and the bitter orange and coffee give it depth.
Of course, the rose note is just the prelude to the main act. This fragrance contains three varieties of oud: Kinam and Zozan from China, and Khao Yi from Thailand. Not being an expert in oud varieties, I can't explain how each contributes to the overall oud note, but the end result is fabulous. Woody, earthy, smoky, and slightly medicinal. The coffee and vanilla stay in the background after the rose note has faded and provide lift and interplay with the oud, further enhancing the experience.
I can say with confidence that Bortnikoff is well and truly back to its oud roots with these new releases. Best perfume yet of 2024 for me.
