Squeaky Clean, Green, Cold Floral

I have found that the word 'opulent' as used by perfumers (Amouage, Ineke, et al.) in their marketing literature is actually code for soapy/aldehydic floral compositions, and I'd have to say that Chloe INNOCENCE fits right into that category. This is a fairly sharp, very soapy green floral perfume reminiscent to my nose of Dior TENDRE POISON.

The hyacinth is dominant, but the squeaky clean quality of this creation is what is most striking of all, above the flowers and everything else. When I donned this perfume today, it occurred to me that it may very well have been the inspiration of the entire CLEAN line. Strong and declarative (potential headache alert...), and a bit cold, I'd say. I realize that aldehydes are not listed among the notes, but INNOCENCE is closer to WHITE LINEN than it is to most floral greens, it seems to me.

Innocence - case Not Proven

A sort of sugar-water pink peony, with jasmin, grannies violets and orange flower, but even notes like grapefruit, banana skin, green notes and a dark bitter iris can't restrain an powerful sugar rush. For a massively sweet-toothed profile it handles the syrup quite well, and by holding onto a watery texture it stays on the breathable side of glycerine.

It comes as no surprise to see the adverts for this showing a pale, blue eyed, blond girl, the super-sweet scent points directly at the teen market.

The saccharin simplicity of Innocence is a remote descendant of that first great puberty perfume - Anaïs Anaïs, and both must be held responsible for prizing open the bedroom door to those morally (and aesthetically) dubious phenomena, Celebrity Perfume and perfume for girls.

A mid 90s scent

The mid 90s, to me, is a period with an overweight of beautiful linear fragrances with few notes. Simplicity and back to quiet. I suppose some may disagree and this is not the whole picture, but this is how I remember it. At least I remember a change from the 80s’ strong flower-bombs to something way more quiet. It was like fashion turning down the volume.
Innocence is in my opinion a typical mid 90s’ scent: Sour, flowery, powdery… that is Innocence to my nose. Not much ado. The sour comes first. Not a bad, but a different sour. Like sharp citrus fruit, the feeling of picking the peel of a lemon. Then especially the rose and violets come to play and that combo is even more odd. It stays sour but in a flowery way. Finally, the warmer, more powdery feeling ends the journey. All in all a great tour… But…
Actually, the fragrance is not the reason why I bought this. It was, as often before, the bottle. Minimalistic, organically shaped an opaque. I really like it. I do not know how to describe the shape of the bottle. It looks hand crafted by a glass blower, a sculpture of some sort. A work of art, definitely.

Fragrance Twin Found

I have always liked Chloe Innocence very much and I even bought 2 bottles - far too expensive - online. It's a pity that this fragrance is no longer produced! It smells soft, like freshly washed, and wonderfully unobtrusive.

I wanted to share my find with you, a fragrance that, while not smelling exactly the same, at least resembles Chloe Innocence:

Narciso Rodrigues Essence

The fragrance is described as:
“floral powdery musk” with iris, rose, benzoin, amber, and musk notes. It is marketed as a daytime scent that is both clean, like “liquid sunshine”, and sexy.

Since many people are still searching for this fragrance, I thought this information would surely be helpful.

Don't go chasing waterfalls

So was the title of the piece by TLC that accompanied the commercial for this fragrance back then. In the ad, you saw cuddling girls in a milky white setting, neo-David Hamilton.
This may have contributed to the US market having a problem with the scent, and it never really took off, not even in Germany. The strange, uterus-like bottle also drew mockery and ridicule, and so the fragrance, which followed the ultra-floral, then-successful scent Chloe Narcisse, did not become one.
I thought it was great back then. The music was hip, the ad was hot, and the bottle, well, it was just a bottle.
But the scent was excitingly different, hot-cold, sweet-fresh, crazysexycool.
The hyacinth in the top note knocked everything that smelled like it or after it down. Still, the fragrance had a freshness kick and also a slight powderiness. The sillage was rather sweet-floral and slightly sharp.
The longevity was a bit of a letdown.
I am now a bit older and wouldn’t wear it this year, but I sometimes sniff my remaining bit or its weaker scent twin (Energizing Fragrance by Shiseido) when I want to be reminded of the mid-90s....

If you love very floral scents and an interesting version of hyacinth, you should seek out this fragrance. Unfortunately, it's been off the market for a long time.
