Unexpectedly Favorite Vanilla - Story Time~
So, story time for anyone that cares. I think I deserve cookies for my delayed gratification with this perfume. I usually avoid vanilla fragrances because I feel like the dry down is always the same vanilla. That is until I was connecting flights at LAX last year, 2023, on my way to Asia.

The SA at the Chloe booth had kindly sprayed almost the whole Ateliers des Fleurs line on paper for me. She really recommended vanilla. I was skeptical at first but the moment I smelled it, I fell in love. I'm not an impulse buyer, I usually sit on things for a while, especially perfume even if it's duty free. I went to grab Umami Burger after sampling the fragrances because it's been so long since I've had my truffle burger. My mind continuously drifted back to this vanilla while I was eating but I was still unsure of purchasing.

It's an aromatic green vanilla, not gourmand at all. If I didn't know the name while spraying, I would never have guessed that it was mainly a vanilla fragrance. I had to marinate on it because vanilla really isn't my type of thing, but that's because I'm not big on gourmands.

When I finally decided I wanted it, I didn't have much time left to board so I went straight to my gate instead, expecting I'd just get it in Taiwan and Japan. Unfortunately, every where I went in Taiwan had the entire line EXCEPT Vanilla Planifolia! I was only in Osaka and Kyoto for a few days but I also did not find it anywhere they had the rest of the fragrance line. I could order it on Nordstrom but it was more expensive and had the addition of tax. Knowing how cheap I could have gotten it at LAX, I stubbornly refused to purchase it via American retailers. Annoyingly, it was also impossible to find samples anywhere.

Luckily I had a France trip planned for this spring 2024, so I waited and waited. I kept going online to see if I could get it for cheaper but no luck there. So I waited until spring and finally beelined to the Chloe store in the St. Honore shopping area in Paris and snagged both Vanilla and Jasmin Sambac at the European price, VAT free.

A contradiction in terms
I’m not a huge fan of vanilla perfumes; often they smell artificial or in best case fall into the gourmand category I am not particularly fond of. So understandably I was sceptical trying Vanilla Plantifolia from the ‘Atelier des Fleurs‘ line by Chloe. Like many designer brands they also invested into a more unique fragrance collection - working with some of the leading noses in the industry, putting effort into design of the packaging and trying to give the whole affair a unique spin. So far it sounds like a pretty common marketing strategy for any big designer brand to increase sales and break into the oversaturated ‘niche’ perfume market. What is different here is that Chloe actually has a creative idea behind this line - a red thread - and all the perfumes within it fit into the overall theme with each fragrance structured around a component from the plant world. Thus they never hugely diverge from the broad categories of fougere, floral, woody or chypre but that actually anchors them in a specific vision - just like a true niche brand would.

There’s a leafy almost fougere opening followed by slight spiciness - think pink pepper. Then the amber accords burst in almost immediately; notes of warm lush vanilla, vanilla the plant - not the over-saturated concoction lots of vanilla perfumes tend to get.
Vanilla Plantifolia doesn’t seem gourmand to me, I would rather classify it as thick floral; but then again there’s strangely a surprising lack of heaviness - at
least as vanilla perfumes tend to get - there’s some lightness and airiness in the scent.
It’s subtle as with all ‘Atelier des Fleurs’ fragrances - this Chloe collection is more for personal use rather than a loud attention-seeking fragrance. Which of course can be disappointing - the projection is moderate and so is longevity. You will be either pleasantly surprised by how nuanced it is (especially if vanilla scents are not your usual go-to) or you’ll be bitterly disappointed. It depends on your expectations.

The nose behind it is Quentin Bisch - responsible for some of the most unique scents out there (‘Marquis de Sade’ by ELdO and ‘Bois Imperial’ by Essential Parfums are some of my favourites). He likes to think outside the box and to explore how powerful one single ingredient can be - and manages to surprise every time with complexity and richness.
The scent changes almost imperceptibly, but it’s not the same fragrance an hour later - it has evolved and a slightly different note is now more prominent. It’s true harmony of chords in a musical sense: the key and tone doesn’t change, but single notes can shift and be brought forward or disappear in the background without it ever affecting the overall composition.

Fresh, Feminine and Sophisticated
Vanilla Planifolia is the name of the plant, native to Mexico, that this is based on. I wasn’t sure what to expect from some of the reviews, and was a bit unsure on the initial opening, but I love it! It’s a smell I recognise, walking along paths in a tropical country. The air is humid and you can smell the slightly sweet mix of plants and flowers. That’s the scent I pick up from this. It’s a fresh, green scent with some crisp, clean vanilla in the background. I find it quite comforting. It’s a soft scent to me, although my boyfriend could smell this before I even entered the room and he loves it. Very feminine and sophisticated. This is a scent that makes me feel put together. Perfect for all year round.

If you’re expecting the usual standard sweet type of vanilla, this isn’t for you.

Palette cleansing vanilla...
Clean, lightly spiced vanilla veil. It's not rich or indulgent because that green element stops it from that direction. Think of the vanilla here as a soft silk veil blowing free in the sunshine over the lushest gardens. Yup. Not gourmand, not childish. Elevated and Elegant.

The problem? This is simply too expensive to stand alone in my wardrobe. It lacks the body that I crave in my perfumes and is maybe a little too clean for me. But it has AMAZING layering potential and adds a subtle polish to most of my wardrobe. It's wearable on its own, mostly at bedtime for me. It's just that when it comes to vanilla, I am seeking indulgence. There's a dry, lightly spiced quality to this. Great alt to Angelique Noire and Vanilla Camouflage. This is a core bottle in my collection, but mostly because of what it can do to diversify my wardrobe through layering. Gourmand lovers might want to steer clear of this one unless they are seeking a palette cleanser in-between their courses of sugar and caramel. Definitely test before buying.

Green wood and feathers in vanilla dust
Vanilla Planifolia, lat. for spice vanilla, an orchid plant. So not vanilla + orchid, or vanilla + spice, no, vanilla = spice vanilla = orchid, just to clean things up a bit.
The hobby of scent-testing increasingly entails having to slowly but surely become a botany nerd as well, after all, you want to know what weed you're smelling like right now. So today (like yesterday) I'm scenting for an orchid plant.
And what can I say, it's wonderful. The scent starts very briskly and directly with a concentrated load of green, so green that it drips in front of my inner eye. Not lawn mower greenery, it reminds me more of freshly peeled or chopped wood from willow branches that have just sprouted. Full of sap, full of readiness to put all available energy into the young buds and fresh shoots of spring (if you haven't chopped us up first, of course) The whole thing almost seems a bit milky and would quickly turn bitter if it weren't for the vanilla.
I perceive it actually very cool, clear, dry and clean, but also soft and delicate. But I just think that's more the overall impression of the scent, created by the combination of the milky bitter greenwood with the soft, slightly dusty vanilla.
Spiciness as such I do not perceive (fortunately), but I think there is definitely a component that prevents the fragrance from becoming too cool, even sterile. That could possibly be dill, maybe even a touch of cinnamon. But definitely not single out to smell.

Clear, delicate, soft and also quite linear shows this experience of wearing and for me the fragrance has everything that makes a skillful composition. With nothing overloaded, vanilla as an unkitschy carrier, slow unfolding without episodes of one-sidedness.

Beautiful for the spring

Weightless-transparent vanilla in a white-floral robe. Later woods roughen it a bit. This gives character without taking away airiness. Good

Absolutely gorgeous, fresh, crisp vanilla with almost a green banana note. Subtle. Not much in the way of longevity.

Now I understand what 'green vanilla' means! This scent opens with a greenish pear note and later reminds me of very green bananas
