Melted tar pastille candy with smooth leather
First I want to mention: personally I don't like dense leather scents anymore but my husband does. I have an endless experience of deep, dark leather scents and earlier I even loved to wear them myself, for example Cuoium used to be the one of my favourites.

The name of a fragrance sometimes guides first impressions, and that was the case with this fragrance.

My initial impression of Leatherize was "wow, what a strong dirty leather". Anyway after smelling it more closely, the leather is not the most authentic one and I don't even get that unpleasant feeling which I used to nowadays when smelling some dark (pungent or smooth, it doesn't matter) leather scent. The note which plays a major role is Cade oil (Juniper): It's extremely tar-like and smoky quality is confusingly natural, intoxicating, and reminds me of a sticky, melted tar pastille candy. At the same time, the middle notes bring an intense earthy nuance to the fragrance, which strengthens the already tarry scent. I don't find any gourmand nuances here because of Butterscotch but it's possible that it makes this concoction easier. Somewhere behind all this, there is surprisingly soft, tender and smooth leather, not the dirty leather saddle which was an immediate association. As the scent develops it becomes more and more pleasant and easy going, but it doesn't change much otherwise. It doesn't have any distinct phases, as the middle and base notes are very clearly present from the start. Only the Iris and Castoreum develop slowly, creating a powdery and intense, yet refined and sensual animalic hint to the aroma. It is very, very innocent though.

If thinking the quality of the scent, I would say it's good. It's nicely blended and it smells completely natural. Anyway it's nothing groundbreaking nor ingenious but I can't name anything completely similar either. My husband fell in love with it but to my nose it's still too leathery and above all too tarry. I don't necessarily want him to smell like this, even though the smell is not unpleasant in any way.

Thank you for reading, I hope you liked my review. If you feel so, please follow me on IG, you will find it on my profile.

Cowboy BBQ, NOT An Enhancer
First all, this perfume is marketed as an enhancer. I envisioned something similar to their excellent, "I Don't Know What." I'd hoped to be able to add subtle leather and animalic notes to other fragrances, but I think this would overpower almost any other scent. Speaking from experience, it certainly has. I've tried layering it with a range of light and heavy fragrances, but, even with only a single spray, it overpowers everything. This is not a freshly tanned leather shoes scent. What I smell is a group of fully leather-clad cowboys barbecuing an impressive assortment of meats. The scent is smoky, spicy, and meaty. Adding it to most fragrances leaves the other scent struggling to compare.

The longevity is fairly long, but there isn't a great deal of evolution or nuance added throughout. The opening is extremely strong, unpleasantly smoky, like a BBQ gone wrong. Over time, it sweetens slightly and the smoke becomes more balanced, but it never really does what it set out to do, or at least what I hoped it would do.

Was expecting something subtle for layering. Got punched in the face.
Got a sample due to how it was marketed as a layerable leather scent.

First spray: oh god no. Like spilling a bottle of liquid smoke on your shirt. Gasping for fresh air trying to escape this acrid smell. Do you like new car smells? Off gassing vinyl? This opening is for you. Never got the leather notes unless you're talking about pleather (plastic). Lasts for an hour then: hints of wood. Dries down maple, woods, vanilla, chai. Very lovely. Similar but stronger than Amber Kiso dry down. Not sure if the opening is worth enduring.

Not the layering agent I expected, this is a true Southern leather, like Texas in a bottle. Smoky tar, cowboy boots and dry grasses.

Amongst all salty-smoky leathers available, this is perhaps the least leathery one and most barbecue-like; like a meat lovers gourmand.

Smoky barbecue leather. Meaty and loud. How you'd layer this is beyond me, but I appreciate the style. Reminds me of Hyde by Hiram Green.
