A Fragrance Orchestrion at the Fair of Memories
That everything was better in the past may NOT be true. That SOME things were better may be TRUE. And that some things are better today is also the case.
And some of the better things back then were found at fairs. A carousel with an orchestrion. A mechanical music automaton with moving figures and resounding "thundering" organ-like music featuring many catchy melodies.
As a child, I always stood there admiringly, listening to the music, fascinated by the "mechanical musicians" who seemed to conduct and play live. Today, one rarely sees and hears such a thing. Among other places, still at our Darmstadt city festival in the marketplace in front of the old town hall. And... just like as a child, I am still "captivated" by it.
But what does all this have to do with the described fragrance? With Joe Eisenberg's Voile de Chypre?
Personally, I say: A lot. Very much!
For this is a fragrance with the full-toned, sometimes slightly "offbeat" notes of such an orchestrion. It starts right from the opening notes, which form the prelude to a voluminous melody. Here I have fruits, pepper, rhubarb, and citrus in the brighter major key before my nose. This intro lasts for quite a while. Before the main music sets in.
Then it really kicks off! A rose-violet-jasmine combination in major and minor brings the figures into lively motion. This part also lasts quite long. Sometimes a bit louder, then again softer, subtly changing the tempo.
Until finally, an almost soft fundamental key, woody and powdery-mossy, is darkly underlaid by pure minor tones that want to evoke slightly nostalgic memories.
Memories of something that seems to linger far back in the mind and struggles to come forward into consciousness. Outside of the fair with the orchestrion, which almost immediately came to mind as I smelled the fragrance.
Now I perceive the quiet melody of "snippets" of fine woods passing by me. Behind it....
At some point, I will probably figure it out....
