Ellis Brooklyn, how could you discontinue Raven?
This is the first perfume I ever fell in love with. It was part of an Ellis Brooklyn sample set. It was slow at first. I didn't hate it, and as such, I was determined to use the entire sample. But with each wear it grew on me more and more until by the time the sample was done, I knew I needed a full bottle.

It's gorgeous. The peony and patchouli come through strongest on me, and it's also a little boozy. It's strong. One light spray on my torso under my clothes is enough to last all day. It makes me feel like a jazz singer in a speakeasy or a witch foraging for mushrooms as the leaves fall from the trees. It feels very autumnal. I love it. I wore it every day after I first got it.

Unfortunately, it started triggering my allergies, so I don't wear it often anymore, and I typically save it for a special occasion, but I spritzed it on today, and was instantly transported back to the moment I knew Raven was the one for me. It's just beautiful.

Sadly, it's no longer being made. I guess no one else loves Raven like I do.

Spicy & Woody
I wasn’t overly impressed with this perfume at first spray, but after letting it fully absorb into my skin and mix with my chemistry it became nicely bearable, and an hour later it was impressive.
The scent itself is bold and spicy, with notes of vanilla, patchouli, and citrus. It’s a warm scent for sure, perfect for winter. I don’t love it, but I am interested in it. I am saving the tester on this one because it could be a perfume that I would need to test on a snowy day. The spice is actually quite nice after a while.

The Glow in the New Rothof
This afternoon, I spontaneously visited a store I had never been to before after lunch. Parallel to Goethestraße - for those not from Frankfurt: this is the street that is called Neuer Wall or Maximilianstraße at your home - there has been a kind of passage called 'Neue Rothof' for some time now, supposedly 'the new runway in Frankfurt's city center'. In reality, it's more of a little runway, but it's nicely done - Brooks Brothers is there, Etro and Hogan - and if there were a champagne bar, it would feel even more like Munich.

In this Neue Rothof - that's obviously how it's said - there is a store called 'Kollektion': it features high-quality photo prints from Tel Aviv, avant-garde fashion jewelry, and other chic accessories - and right in the middle, a table with perfumes from Ellis - a brand I had actually never heard of until this afternoon. This one - Raven - one of three or four scents they had, I liked exceptionally well when I sniffed it from the cap - and so it came with me to the office on a gray and uneventful Monday afternoon - and: wow, what a fragrance!

Raven is not a quiet scent; on the contrary. Also 'floral-smoky', as it says above, I find at least inaccurate. Raven is a vibrant perfume full of confidence, class, and presence. I recognized the peony, the musk as well, and I would definitely have suspected oud as well. Raven is a scent for and a bit like the women you meet around noon in and around the Neue Rothof: proud creatures in coral-colored silk blouses and Cartier, who have two master's degrees and two assistants and are responsible for million-dollar budgets.

Raven has a kind of olfactory glow and a far-reaching sillage that made my office neighbor later stop at my door, flaring his nostrils, and ask: 'Is that you?' Despite its intoxicating presence, it is neither ordinary nor vulgar, but in its almost metallic floral quality, it is highly elegant, sophisticated, and challenging at the same time. And also exciting to wear for an - urban, self-assured - gentleman (with or without master's degrees and assistants). A true discovery.

Conclusion: in my last comment, where I wrote about Frankfurt - early November last year about Acqua di Parma's Colonia Ambra, I just checked again - I promised to write somewhat nicely about the city next time. Et voilà: the glow in the Neue Rothof!

The raven knocks at midnight. Roses whisper of lost love, patchouli lulls the grieving soul. Fruits are scented nevermore.

Dark, strange, strong, kind of dirty. Almost always gives me a headache. Patchouli is a make or break note for me, and it's too strong here.

A unisex mature fragrance that does evolve on the skin yet remains spicy with wood notes.

Look, a rose that I like. No fruit, no lotus, but a spicy patch with boozy rose. Slightly sweet, but with depth.

A Gothic patchouli-rose. Dark earth, red roses. The moon is full. The night is still young. I think it’s great and the name is very fitting.

Fruity-sweet patchouli with earth crumbs - a bit off for my nose and more like a rosy dove than a dark shiny raven!

Really beautiful and very dark rose-patchouli. Authentic and natural. It starts earthy (almost oud-like) and later becomes softer, but without sweetness.
