There are better Chypres
When ordering Eau de Fröhliche No. 2 (yes, I bought it, even though it doesn't last long on me, but I can reapply and this scent has something, anise and mint, mhh), I also directly ordered two Chypre samples from Esteban. Unfortunately, I still can't reliably identify a Chypre, but I know I like them, as I have a few in my collection.

This morning, I indulged in Classic Chypre. The first impression is not overwhelming; the scent comes across as somewhat intrusive, citrusy, and spicy. There's no Aha effect, I find the fragrance rather sobering, and something is prickling in my nose, but I can't pinpoint what it is. After a while, it becomes sweeter and floral; now I think it might be jasmine that I don't like here and which causes headaches with a stronger dosage. The slight prickling subsides, and now it becomes spicy-sweet, almost a bit oriental.

The longevity is good; after four hours, the scent is weaker but still noticeable, and I would rate the sillage as average. I only know the bottle from the photo, well, it reminds me of a modern gravestone. I can't assign the scent to a specific season, and due to its spicy sweetness, I find it unsuitable for the opposite sex. Chypre Classic is not a bad fragrance, but it leaves me cold; somehow, it seems disguised to me.

A Letter Found in a Dusty Chest
Dear folks,
a find in the attic. I usually avoid the heated rooms under the blazing roof tiles in summer, which not only taste of dust but also harbor the whispers of ghosts from times gone by. But this time I had to go up, to search for archival materials (a tax return from 1812 that the tax office had requested). In passing, I stumbled upon an inconspicuous (though charmingly packaged) box containing the correspondence of a distant ancestor with the beauty of a faraway land. I will keep it brief; one of the letters contained remarks about Olfaktoria. The first paragraph speaks of the joy of receiving a long-sought perfume - one might skip over it; it is not relevant. However, the second paragraph strangely discusses an essence that was supposedly created only in 2007: "Classic Chypre" by Esteban. The matter remains peculiar. Here is the letter:

To the noble lady of Aava-Land,
the resounding crack of relief with which the steel band of uncertainty - wrapped around the anxious heart and the trembling breast - was shattered, you must have heard even in the distant ** . It is not often that nobility not only understands the worries and concerns of the common people but also graciously addresses them. The benefit that the provision of your hundred-liter essence represents can only be appreciated by one who has long and feverishly hunted for the holy grail, who has walked through blazing deserts, enticed by mirages, and found the coveted drop in an unexpectedly encountered oasis at the end of despair. When the refreshment of abundance (which 10ml undoubtedly is) pours over the thirsty one, he can find peace from the urgency of further searching and blissfully rest his head on the fragrant pillow of his essence. He rests gently in the bosom of angels and breathes the fragrant air of paradise.

I will report to you more cheerfully about the essence "Classic Chypre." Like the cloudless morning of an early summer day, when Aurora with her rosy-fingered grace sprinkles dew on all the blossoms of the fruit trees, the scent of a mighty fruit basket rises and fills the ether, the spaces, the souls of all beings that have noses. Stupefying for the small creatures, uplifting for the larger ones, the fragrance speaks of the promise of eternal abundance, an everlasting wealth of aromas and unquenched longings. The timid may grow anxious when such fervor urges the earthly ones heavenward. And especially for the man - familiar with the bitter juices of the earth and the trees - discomfort may arise when the graces and fairies dance around him in airy, fruity veils and seek to entice him to indulge. Yet his resistance weakens when the dance of blossoms and fruits merges with the woody notes and descends upon his head like a cloud of incense. He cannot help it; it bursts forth from him to say: "Yes, I will." And happily, he takes the bottle home, to the altar of scent, as if it were his bride, to whom he has given a lifelong promise to caress and be caressed in flattering hours, to whisper comfortingly to each other in dark times, to break out in shared jubilation when the blossoms conquer winter…
To you, benefactor, I kiss both hands,
and take my stammering as a hymn
and before my voice finally breaks,
I whisper graciously: Thank you.
Yours
forever and soon…

Now let's get to the point!
I won't waste much time with this comment, because calling this scent "Classic Chypre" is a joke!
I am also referred to as a Chypre enthusiast, Chypre lover, and all sorts of things in this community, and you know what? I find that neither discriminatory nor racist! I'm just putting my white ass in here (that's what a dark-skinned friend from South Africa calls me: "White ass with blue eyes!")
This perfume has just brushed past being a Chypre. Maybe it wanted to become one when it grows up. It really smells nice, but also somewhat like my grandpa's cream that he smeared in his nose and ears to later cut out the hair that grew there.
Nice idea. But a bit of scraped tree moss and patchouli, which doesn't even cover the skeletons in the closet, does not make a Chypre!

An Almost Classic Chypre
I think that traditionalists might be somewhat dissatisfied here, as this "classic" Chypre does show its age a bit. But I’ll start from the beginning.

The fragrance pyramid probably reveals only half of what’s going on, I would say, because aldehydes must have been blended into the top notes. In any case, we have a well-crafted soapy note here, with the crucial green freshness and zest that is so important for the theme.

In the heart, it becomes a bit sweeter in the floral bouquet than one is used to from the grand compositions, but it definitely has its own charm. Here too, I suspect there are more flowers than one can read about, all tied together into a lovely round bouquet. This elaboration makes the perfume not necessarily feminine and also turns it into an object of desire for men.

The almost classic impression is consistently maintained into the base, where we encounter the important notes of moss, wood, and vanilla again. Here too, attention has been paid to the harmony of the notes and a subtle sweetness.
Interestingly, Esteban also offers a modern Chypre, which I, of course, had to test simultaneously with the classic. Guess three times which one I prefer?

Anyone looking to explore the wide field of Chypre fragrances would find Esteban's version to be an almost classic representative of the genre, suitable for a gentle introduction. So, go ahead, it’s worth it!

Disappointed, I let the bottle fall back into its musty moss bed. It had started off so beautifully between us.
