A Fascinating Woody Scent
Good evening! As an absolute novice when it comes to fragrances, even though I'm already close to retirement age, I must first ask for your understanding regarding the accuracy of my descriptions. I have been reading here for a few days, but I had to realize that I could not detect everything (possibly nothing) from some brands presented here that I recently tried, while from others I was able to pick up more.
I received the fragrance "Cèdre" as a sample, included with the ordered 2-ml bottles of "Tonka" and "Cuir". I ordered the latter two based on the descriptions given here in the forum, but I was disappointed by them.
"Cèdre" (Cedar) is completely different. A dry, citrusy scent without sweetness, quickly revealing a sharp wood aroma that lasts a long time. It struck me immediately - as one of the very few scents I have tried - as fascinating.
Addendum/Revision 12/7/2014:
After significantly expanding my experience with fragrances, I can say that "Les Matières - Cèdre" by Esteban still ranks among my favorites, just behind "Red Vetyver" by Montale. The scent - for my nose essentially a blend of grapefruit with pencil cedar - still has something fascinating for me, especially when I compare it to an EdT of a similar scent profile that I wear as a reference scent. (I often do this by spraying two different fragrances on my hands. This makes evaluation easier.) Unfortunately, longevity and sillage are not particularly strong - as with most Esteban scents. Its enchanting effect unfolds right at the beginning; it diminishes quite quickly. Nevertheless, it remains one of my favorites!
