Surprise!
This Esteban surprised me the most. With Tonka, I had expected a vanilla bomb with lush sweetness. However, what I got was something very noble and rather spicy.

The scent starts off very spicy with a pleasant sharpness, which seems to come more from the ginger.

In the heart, a beautiful note of sweet fruits and cinnamon develops on a patchouli base.

The heart note then makes its way into the base, where it is very slowly replaced by the tonka-sandalwood mixture.

Of all the Esteban fragrances I had as test samples, this one is going on my shopping list, as it features this beautiful blend of unusual yet still wearable. However, I will get the EdP version, as the longevity could be better.

Tonka-less, sweet little fruit
Ahh, I am always glad when I can test a fragrance from a brand that is still unknown to me. Or in other words, a manufacturer whose products I have never tried before. With Esteban, I am starting with Tonka, and my expectations are... well, actually set quite high, as I expect something wonderful from a tonka bean just based on the name, since it is one of my favorite fragrance notes.

The scent:
At the beginning, one primarily perceives the pepper and tobacco, with the pepper thankfully smelling not sharp, but rather mild. Strange that tobacco is not listed at all in the fragrance pyramid. Bergamot and ginger are hardly discernible.
In the heart note, it becomes sweeter and fruitier due to the dried fruits. A bit of patchouli joins in. The tobacco slowly fades here, but is still pleasant to smell.
I also have the feeling of perceiving something slightly nutty (somewhat similar to trail mix...).
In the base, for a tiny moment, the tonka bean can be smelled, and even then it is far too weak for the scent to deserve the name Tonka, and soon there is no trace of it left. The cinnamon, on the other hand, becomes stronger and smells good with the still fragrant fruits. The tobacco also recedes into the background. The vetiver is not noticeable at all, and the sandalwood is very faint as well. Towards the end, one can only smell the fruity notes along with the cinnamon and a hint of the remaining tobacco.

The longevity and sillage:
The longevity is about seven to eight hours, however, the scent is already very weak after about three hours.
I had imagined the sillage to be a bit stronger due to the tonka bean and cinnamon, but well. It is at least average and can be perceived if one is close enough. However, I find the scent a bit too weak for winter. After three to four hours, the scent can only be perceived by oneself, and only if one presses their nose against the sprayed area.

The bottle:
The bottle is rectangular and transparent, containing the golden perfume liquid. The name of the fragrance is directly placed on the bottle, underneath is a kind of bubble as a design element. The cap is cylindrical, tall, and also golden. A special feature is the pendant on the cap. A small, cylindrical stone with embellishments hangs from a piece of rope or string. Even though I couldn't quite figure out what this stone represents, it at least looks great!

Tonka by Esteban is a beautiful, fruity sweet fragrance. It is sweet, yet not too heavy, so it can be worn in both summer and winter. However, I fear that the scent will quickly dissipate in winter, as the sillage is not particularly strong.

I believe that despite the fruity and sweet notes, the scent suits men better, as the tobacco, especially at the beginning, is quite strong and can still be smelled in the background even in the base.

Inappropriate Name but...
... a beautiful scent!

Tonka! Tonka? Hmmm, somehow the name is inappropriate! Inappropriate for this beautiful scent, which does not come across as vanilla or sweet at all!

Tonka greets me with spiciness, beautifully transitions with patchouli in the base into a slightly fruity note, and ends with the light sweetness of tonka bean and vetiver!

I find Tonka very suitable for everyday wear, can be worn by both men and women, although I would assign the scent more to women!

The longevity is not sooooooo great and the sillage is mediocre!

"With Without" Tonka
For that, "Les Matieres - Tonka" smells exemplary of everything else that is listed. It is a well-crafted and carefully balanced fragrance composition. It starts with a citrusy opening, develops into a spicy warmth, and the dried fruit does not hold back with its scent of fermented fruit. Patchouli is well-mannered and restrained. Or it has gotten involved with the dried fruit. Cinnamon and here unlisted cloves make "Les Matieres - Tonka" a very fruity aromatic tobacco scent. Now I wish for some green-smoky vetiver, but I don't notice any of that. Well, I'm flexible; it could also be earthy brown and smoky.
And where is the tonka? Is something wrong with my olfactory receptors? I checked that. I have a few dried tonka beans for smoking. I broke one into two pieces and: Aaaah, what a fine vanilla-almond scent! Something like that, but still different, just tonka. And again, I sniffed at my wrist. Now I don't know if a tiny remnant of that delicious tonka bean scent has lingered on my smell receptors or if I have now conditioned my olfactory center accordingly: Now I also smell a hint of tonka in "Les Matieres - Tonka." That's why I put the beans away again, just to keep everything tidy. But now I also smell tonka in this fragrance.
Still, for a perfume that has tonka as its program in the name, there is decidedly too little tonka in the scent.
Apart from the increasingly rare vetiver, this would be exactly the component that would give the fragrance something rich and soft and would take away the tobacco-punch note. "Les Matieres - Tonka" is well-lasting, the sillage is moderate, it is a fragrance for colder temperatures.
The bottle with its glass ball on the front is original and feels pleasant in the hand. "Les Matieres - Tonka" is "with without" tonka a unisex fragrance. But why is it then called "Tonka"?

Too Much Tobacco
With a fragrance called Tonka, I expect a soft, rather sweet scent. But that is absolutely not the case here. There was no sweetness at all. For me, it started off very smoky and spicy. I clearly smelled tobacco, even though it doesn't appear in the pyramid.
Over time, it became a bit milder, but the smoky tobacco note never completely disappeared. Overall, it lasted on me for about 4 hours.
For me, this fragrance has nothing feminine about it; I would definitely categorize it as masculine. However, a man can wear it anytime.

Deliciously spiced tonka bean with a hint of sharpness and lots of warmth. Subtle and gentle at the same time. Just perfect for rolling around in...

Winter feeling. Cinnamon fruits & patchouli perfectly combined with pepper, ginger, sandalwood. A warm, atmospheric scent. Just my thing.

First a dry-spicy pencil with tobacco, then spicy-warm sandalwood with a hint of fruit and a delicate vanilla-cinnamon topping - fantastic!

Tobacco with pepper and cinnamon... Soft, close to the skin, and cozy - a lovely men's fragrance!
If a woman likes to wear pants... then why not!

Smells like everything listed: only Tonka is missing! But there's dried fruit, cinnamon, clove. Fruity aromatic tobacco without Tonka, typical Esteban.

Strangely, it has a very medicinal opening and a woody continuation, completely without tonka and sweetness. Definitely masculine.

A cinnamon - patchouli scent! Only feminine in the top notes. Missed the mark....do over. ;-) With significantly more tonka, it would be a must-have. What a pity.

Rather light and only slightly sweet for Tonka, especially at first. On me, Vetiver is more pronounced than Tonka! Quite nice, but not an absolute "must have!"

For me, THE tonka scent. I could sink into it, savor it, soak it up. One of my favorites for fall and winter!
