Sorcy's Magnum Opus
I’ll confess: my usual stance on Filippo’s body of work is one of polite, slightly flippant amusement. It often feels like liturgically inspired pseudo-performance art first, and perfume second. But with Contre Bombarde 32, he silences my skeptic side by delivering a genuine masterpiece.

Inspired by the most powerful stops of the Great Organ of Notre-Dame, this is the standout from his Extrait de Musique collection among those I could sample.
Sorcinelli, an incense virtuoso (or monomaniac?), shifts away from simple sacred smoke to achieve a gourmand-church fusion.

Contre Bombarde is simplistically linear but rich. It pairs the citrusy, pine-like resin of elemi with a buttery, caramel accord. This blend transforms the antique waxiness of the organ’s mahogany wood and sap resin into a harmonious, sweetness.
It’s mature enough for incense purists, but still comforting for sweet-toothed aficionados.
Not a beastly performer, yet a scent that has good lasting power, and slightly above average projection.

Forget the many other theatrical slight twists and modulations around boring incense dominant formulas that afflict Sorcy's library. Contre Bombarde is the sound of genius, a unique outlier.

Much more that a common incense
This fragrance is inspired by the bombard which is a reed register, generally present in the pedalboard of the organ with measures of 8, 16 or 32 feet. Of preserved French origins, its resonators consist of inverted wooden pyramids. The bombard produces a sound similar to that of the trombone register, it is the organ's most powerful register. It is a very very good fragrance that settles on an amber, smoky and aromatic base that will last a long time. Pleasant to wear especially during the cold seasons. Generates a warm and comforting atmosphere that is difficult to escape

Chewy incense
Of the SAUF trio, Contre Bombarde 32 is the clear standout and my personal favorite. I see this fragrance as an improvement over LAVS, which although soaring and celestial, was too soapy and cold for my taste. It also had a hollowed-out feel to it that made it slightly depressing to wear. Contre Bombarde 32, a name that just trips off the tongue, takes the beautiful incense from LAVS and layers it with an immense, sugared amber with burned sugar edges and sweet, dirty old church pew wood, giving it a far more satisfying, chewy texture that fills the mouth.

The opening is quite bitter and green, zinging with unburned, lemony elemi resin, bitter orange, and a brusque, sourish cedar, but quickly it becomes creamy with amber, sugar, and resin-rubbed woods. Think LAVS crossed with Amber Absolute crossed with the unctuous gourmandise of Rosarium by Angela Ciampagna and you can begin to imagine what a toothsome experience this is.

Contre Bombarde 32: an unusual 'wide' scent
Contre Bombarde 32 is like Tauer Au Coeur du Désert, Xerjoff Zefiro and Costume National Homme Parfum were in a secret get-together, trading parts of each other. It has the beautiful amber from the first, the smoking incense of the second, and the lively, happy-inducing vibe of the third. It is most certainly not a screamer, which would not fit the scent profile, has an interesting juniper or taxus resin hint in the beginning, and a warm heart.

For me, a decent longevity, but I found a new old stock (white) bottle, I have no idea how the current formulation would perform. But if my original sample was from a recent batch, then the current rendition is fine too. Most certainly not fit for summer. It needs a cold fall or crisp winter day.

Although the notes I mentioned sound dense and compact, in reality you can poke your head up and look around in this scent. It is not compact at all, au contraire. It has an unusual wideness, if that statement does make sense for you. I was afraid of emptying my sample and being without this, and that made me embark on a quest to find a full bottle.

Toccata and Fugue at Tintern Abbey
Meandering through the great hall of an old stone abbey, past old wooden pews. Some vegetation creeps through the cracks, with moss growing in cool, damp corners. A lingering hint of mildew floats in the air. A breeze through broken windows stirs up burnt incense resins in an old thurible - somewhat stale but still potent. A beam of sunlight pierces through and hits the pews - the warmth releasing a subtle sweetness in the air...

This is an atmospheric incense with an underlying burnt vanilla sweetness that is done with such a gentle hand to not be overpowering, sticky, or syrupy. The opening is a little bit cold and funky and woody, but then dries down to more of an incense & burnt caramel/vanilla. Eventually the incense settles with the rest of the base notes to more of an amber accord. A contemplative fragrance that departs from the intensity of freshly burning church incense during mass to more of a memory.

This is reflected in the brief on this fragrance in a more practical manner, as the bombard being the deepest/most powerful section of the organ, the rods are quite large and will be covered in incense, polish, dust, etc. over long periods of time. One could imagine walking into an old abandoned cathedral and playing the organ to see a cloud of dust suspended in the air from the vibrations. Catch that in a bottle like a firefly...

Orangey-resinous opening, moves to a liturgical incense + sandalwood combo which smells like mahogany. Sorcy is in for the win!

Sorcinelli's cooling, peppery, metallic incense pitted against smooth, orangey woods, caramel. A creamier alternative to Au Coeur du Désert.

Hate to say it but this smells better on others than on myself. A blast of pepper, labdanum and great churchy incense.

The most wearable Sorcinelli. In here, his usual incense gets blended with powdery vanilla and orangey amber.
Very, very, VERY addictive.

A blast of black pepper and metallic incense, a dash of smoke, dries down to glorious amber and orange. Preforms very well, not overwhelming

Opening is smoke, fresh timber, vanilla. Going towards 60% vanilla and 40% the rest. Lip balm noticeable. Great quality! Not typical incense

Well, this is easy to pin down: vanilla lip balm. The weird artsy-fartsy bottle design gives no clue whether it's on purpose or by accident.

Not at all vanilla or lip balm as the other statement, but a very nice elemi-caramel which has a churchy incense and old wood feel. Superb.

Evolves from charred, peppery incense laden church pews into smoky, orange tinged, caramely resins over 1-2 hours. Gorgeous scent trail.

Beautiful scent. Woody vanilla composition. Smell a bit like a new, wooden furniture. Lacking in parameters unfortunately!
