ennui_noir Filippo Sorcinelli 2016

Filippo Sorcinelli: a man with an interesting background - from an organist at 13 years of age to a fashion designer for the popes and clerics, and now - perfumery. His creations have a dark and melancholic style, Rick Owens of perfumery - that’s how I call him.

His creations are like him: dark, mysterious and maybe a bit eclectic. Ennui noir is one of those scents that isn’t there to lift your spirits - it is there to grant you an olfactory journey to the dark and gloomy streets from a noir movie/game. The main dark-jazzy accord here is played by the trio of lavender, vanilla, and patchouli. All of them are of course “colorless” and dusty here. Almost no sweetness from vanilla and patchouli, but you can clearly smell them there.

Amazing moody perfume, not for everyday wear, but it’s a perfect fit if you want to put on a coat and wander off into the empty night streets, listening to some noir-y jazz bands like Bohren & der Club of Gore or Somewhere Off Jazz Street.

I really like "dark" perfumes, scents that have some depth to them. That's what it feels like, at least. Not airy.. or overly fruity and sweet - but rather dark, moody, and mysterious. That's how I want to smell like, that's what feels right!

Especially during my favorite season of the year, autumn, this really rings true. And this perfume matches that vibe so perfectly. I'll do my best to describe my love for this scent, I've looked for similar perfumes but I just ahven't been able to find any that hit the spot just like ennui_noir . Also can I just say how GORGEOUS that bootle looks? I love this design.

It has a very unique vibe to it. I don't know if that's the heliotrope note or the myrtle, I can't really explain it. It's spicy alright, but not in an aggressive way- it doesn't blast you with spices where you'd immediately think of spice cabinets (looking at you Ambre sultan Eau de Parfum ). That touch of lavender really balances it out super nicely. At its core, it's a woody patchouli vanilla fragrance that is surrounded by subtle spice notes and soothing florals. And it does that so well, it's super gorgeous.

This fragrance is my go-to for colder weather. If I don't know what fragrance to wear, no matter the occasion, I can choose ennui_noir . It's both elegant but also casual because it's not super complex, really. It's like a dark soothing blanket that you can cover yourself in.. and that's exactly what I need.

Sorcinelli’s dark and erotic depth—so easy to lose yourself in—is tempered by a brighter heliotrope. It feels like being in a night garden where you've met a soulmate. Perhaps only for one night. A forbidden love, or simply a romantic hookup. The animalic pull of patchouli tearing the moment into a whirlwind of passion.

There’s a powdery sweetness in this tender, warm night. A beautiful heliotrope, a powdery nocturne.

Compared to other scents in this series, one could complain about its longevity. But maybe that's part of the vanishing night itself. A nostalgic reaching for something—despite the ruthless light of morning.

One of the few Sorcinelli's works that did not leave an impression for me. It's alright but not as good as the reviews have led me to believe... Heliotrope overload with slightly sweet patchouli. Maybe I just lack an appreciation for heliotrope as a note or maybe it's my hatred for vanilla, but I am truly failing to see what's so special about this scent... Longevity is also quite poor on my skin.

This seems to be an attempt to make heliotrope somewhat dreary and forlorn, but alas, it comes out all doughy, dusty and powdery as a good heliotrope should be, with just the slightest dank patchouli edge. Its quite round, accessible, not nearly as dark as I'd hoped, and I do have my fair share of heliotrope forward scents that I love, so this one just was not compelling enough to add to the collection.
