On a snowy winter evening, long before the devastating flames, an altar boy sits in the sacristy of the old cathedral and loads a censer with the precious resin from the Holy Land. His best friend Gabriel, who bears the name of the archangel who announced the birth of Jesus to the holy mother, is tying a wreath of coniferous plants next to him. The smell of the wreath mingled with that of the old wood of the storage cupboards and the sweet pastries they both occasionally ate a piece of.
