Oceano Viola Filippo Sorcinelli 2025

I’m on a mission to find an iris perfume, and looking at the notes I was so sure I would love this. Salty purple florals at sea? Sign me up!

Unfortunately the entire composition is dominated by a heavy splash of cascalone (a sort of watery melon note, if you’re unfamiliar). A slight iris powderiness and a hint of saltiness emerge in the heart, but the cascalone overwhelms from start to finish. This is “ocean” in the tradition of fresh blue fragrances, not the brined iris I was hoping for.

If you like fruity scents, this might not be the letdown for you that it was for me. Unfortunately I’m not terribly fond of fruit notes and particularly dislike melon, so this is a hard pass.

This is frequently compared to The Mariner's Rhyme , which is next on my list to try. Fingers crossed I have a more enjoyable time with that perfume.

Anyway, projection is moderate and longevity is 8+ hours. Gender is anyone who likes the idea of a blue melon scent.

I was always curious about this one, from the name, the packing and everything. The note of amethyst! It was on my watch list for so long but I'm happy I got to test it as a freebie because it's simply not worth it...
Once again, Sorcinelli has to offer or the best perfume ever, or something totally disappointing... I'm not sensitive to cascalone, it's not what hurts me. It's... how weak this scent feels. I'm not asking for a bomb in sillage or longevity, that would be just a plus as some of the scents I like are really intimate and all, but this. Is. Weak. It lacks presence, charisma. Of course the note of amethyst is completely bullshit, I knew it even before testing it (even tho I was curious about how he would interpretate it), but it's like... a pale seaweed/cascalone scent. It doesn't evoke melancholy nor any other feeling. It's just... flat, much to my disappointment.

Edit (10/10/25) The more time goes by, the more the cascalone dominates over every other component. The result is an overly chemical, jarring scent that, together with the iris, borders on nauseating.

Given the remarkable inspiration behind this fragrance, and what it symbolizes, I will confine myself to purely technical impressions in the form of detached notes — the poetry has already been expressed by Sorcinelli.

The perfume presents itself as layered and almost “three-dimensional.” Iris and violet move in unison, trading places with elegance at different moments. A saline and iodic undercurrent runs consistently through the entire evolution.

Beneath (outside the olfactory pyramid) lies a base of jetsam woods and sandy nuances, giving structure and grounding. From time to time, an ink-like facet emerges, with echoes that recall territories close to Squid.

The overall temperature is cold, only slightly warmed by the velvety softness of violet. A metallic streak, intertwined with marine and sandy accords, decisively cuts through the creaminess and powderiness of iris, as well as the cosmetic aspect of violet.

Cascalone, softer than its sharper sibling Calone, is perceptible at this dosage yet unlikely to overwhelm most noses. Instead, it moistens the composition with a discreet, watery-fruity tone.

On a synesthetic level, the fragrance conjures the following images and concepts: twilight / neuston / mother-of-pearl / ultraviolet / Physalia physalis / abstract ocean / cosmogony.

I find the fragrance distinctive and finely attuned to its inspiration and intended message. Were it not for The Mariner’s Rhyme by Francesca Bianchi — which predates it and shares much of its DNA — I would welcome it with far greater enthusiasm.

Sorcinelli masters the witchcraft storytelling to perfection. I can’t get this out of my head — yes, that’s exactly how amethyst smells!

There’s a marine sharpness here, the cut lines of the stone’s facets.

The color is violet, with the deep lightness of a violet flower dominating.

There’s also dust — probably the residue from polishing the stone. Over time, this scent turns dry and powdery, clinging close to the skin.

Against the light, the stone appears watery, with darker streaks running through the purple. Natural stones are rarely crystal clear.

The bottle is stunning, like everything in this Sorcinelli signature series. If only it lasted longer. This amethyst turns to dust far too quickly…

Immediately after spraying it on, I find myself by the sea, surrounded by large brown-green stones. Dark waves, edged with white foam, break against the shore. The sky hangs over me as if before a storm, passing through a spectrum of colors from white to gray to violet. There is no sun to be seen anywhere, not even a single person. I sit down in the only dry spot; the stones ​​around me, covered with damp green algae, seem to give off a mossy scent.
A fresh wind blows in gusts from the water and occasionally brings a salty spray with it. The scent is not only typically marine, but is accompanied by a certain sweetness … Could it be that irises or strawflowers are growing through the gaps between the stones, trying to cover the salty smell of the air with their fragrance?
No matter how much I look around, there are no flowers to be seen anywhere. This sweetness is constantly rising from somewhere and temporarily covering the salty smell of the sea. Mysterious…
I feel a strange sense of freedom and can breathe freely. After a while, the wind dies down and I enjoy the feeling of complete freedom.
A fragrance can have such a powerful effect!
