Fragrance of the Last Century
Wow, this is quite an older Guerlain fragrance. I had to look twice to make sure I was reading it correctly. 1890. The birth year of one of the most successful comedians of all time. Stan Laurel. Just a year earlier, Charlie Chaplin was born, and two years later, Oliver Hardy "followed."

Well, there are older fragrances that are still being produced, but I still think it's great to be able to test a fragrance that was created 100 years ago. Even though I can almost guess how the fragrance will probably smell,… because I expect something typically classic, like the combination of lemon, lavender, oakmoss, and so on.

Let's see how the fragrance really smells (and yes, I am already sure that the fragrance has been reformulated several times by now…).

The fragrance:
The fragrance starts very fresh with lemons. There is also a sweet "aftertaste" that makes the fragrance almost smell like lemon ice cream. It is refreshing and smells delicious.
Shortly after, the herbs come into play, which fit well with fragrances intended for warm days. Although I can't distinguish the individual herbs very well. Only then does the lavender gradually emerge, giving the fragrance the expected classic feel.
And typical for this time, the fragrance also radiates a barbershop-like aura, as some would describe it here. Much later, the fragrance has light woody notes as a base, but I can't smell any vanilla at all. The initial sweetness also diminishes, so the fragrance mostly remains citrusy fresh.

The sillage and longevity:
The projection is quite good at the beginning, as is often the case with such fragrances. It feels refreshing and invigorating, but then quickly fades, so it can actually be reapplied after about an hour.
The longevity is rather short, around two to three hours, but you can always reapply it as mentioned, which is nice on hot days.

The bottle:
I don't know exactly what the first bottles looked like, but it was eventually also bottled in the "bee bottles." So cylindrical bottles with a dome-like top, where bees are depicted all over the bottle. The cap is round and also decorated, and presumably, there was originally no spray head, so the fragrance was a splash. Anyway, like all bee bottles, this one looks quite nice as well.

Yes, the fragrance is refreshing and good. From today's perspective, it may not be so special anymore, as there are now so many fragrances that smell just as good or similar, but the fragrance does smell natural and in the usual Guerlain quality.

Due to its refreshing effect, the fragrance was probably often used on hot days; those who own it can use it well right now on these hot days, although you really have to like this barbershop scent.

Oh yes… Stan Laurel. I am a big fan of Laurel and Hardy and enjoy watching their films again and again. Back then, I didn't even know that he wrote many of the gags in his films himself. A great man, as was Oliver Hardy and many other comedians from the era, who made my childhood funnier and still make me laugh today.
(He is, by the way, an Oscar winner, for those who are interested!)

The feared vanilla sweetness is absent.
Compared to other Guerlain colognes, it's simpler, but that doesn't diminish the wearing pleasure in summer.

A beautiful zesty-fresh citrus opening
Then a little lavender adventure
After 1 hour, it's all over with soft vanilla wood

A fragrance type that was popular around the turn of the century (see also various English scents) and offers authentic sourness: Like cutting into a lemon.

Aromatherapeutic refreshment (lemon balm!) as a pick-me-up for 5 minutes. No Ambroxan, no Cashmeran, no Iso E Super, no BS.

Herb-spicy green-citrus EdC, subtly underlaid with vanilla. Feels dated. Very fine, initially almost medicinal, then a bit sour.

A short, very sour pleasure, like biting into a lemon. After 30 minutes, only a hint remains.

My first unbiased scent impression: Ricola lemon balm candies. Perfect for high summer over 30 degrees!

I guess I'll mix it myself: bergamot, lemon, lavender... That should be doable with essential oils!
Such a great scent!

Wonderful zesty start. For me, the pleasant sharpness of lemongrass mainly defines the rest.

While cleaning up, I found a bottle of this wonderful classic cologne. Citrusy, herbal, lavender, woody, delicious, amazing!
