Natural Noblesse
During my beginning as a sales assistant in a noble perfume shop I always was awestruck when somebody was wearing Chant d'Aromes. Even today, I remember all those posh women: Mrs. So-and-so and her kind, who dropped by in the afternoon just to find out if there was something new. They were served a glass of champagne or a cup of coffee, and with a bill of 500 Deutsche Mark and a coloured bag, they left to continue their shopping.

Chant d'Aromes emanates this natural noblesse of these customers. These were not the nouveau riche, or a dyed blond person on high heels who pulls bundles of bank notes out of her handbag. Today I consider to get Chant d'Aromes for myself. Perhaps this perfume provides that kind of noblesse that I am missing. I have never worn it so far, but it is simply enchanting.

Chant d'Aromes is a pale green, transparent chypre fragrance with an elegant aura. The top note promises a very special Guerlain experience. It does not have any sweetness, although the heart note looks differently in the scent pyramid. On the other hand, it is not tart as well. Maybe it is a bit soapy but in a very refined way. I would describe the temperature of this fragrance as rather chilly, and the expression of the flowers is discreet in an unfamiliar way.

Chant d'Aromes rounds off with a note of oak moss that I love so much. But noboby has to be afraid of dark, mossy base notes since also the base notes are bright and caressing.

Chant d'Aromes does not put its mark on the wearer. It does not go strong, instead it subordinates to its wearer quite natural. My clients in the 1960's would have regarded Chant d'Aromes as day wear. If I wore it, any day would feel like holiday. Yes, Chant d'Aromes is what is still missing in my Guerlain collection, so the only thing I can to is to extend my wishlist. May thanks to Turmalin, for renewing my acquaintance with it so pleasantly.

Chiffon Aquarelle
Chant d'Aromes could have made our world (at least on the olfactory level) insanely better, had the young forayers into Perfumeland chosen it as their entry-level fragrance. And think about it, they could have - had they been given a chance.

This gentle ladylike composition is all about soft focus and seamless blending. It starts with a medley of somewhat nondescript green notes, not entirely unlike Chamade, but softer sans the galbanum. The green makes way for a floral heart, with a veil of sparkling aldehydes thrown over an amalgam of pastel flowers, that feels like a perfect chiffon summer dress swirling about one’s body in the warm breeze. About three hours in, Chant d'Aromes veers in the familiar direction of Mitsouko and takes on a woody chypre quality, all the while retaining its transparent watercolor feel. It doesn't seem to have a distinct drydown phase so much as meld into the skin and create a glowing aura, at once spring like and mellow.
In my personal Utopia young girls shall receive a bottle of Chant d'Aromes as their first real perfume, and wiped out be the horrid confections that market analysts and accountants expect them to wear. One can dream, right?

Sunday Perfume
Given the wonderful reviews of this fragrance, mine will be a note more of appreciation than analysis. Chant d'Arômes is an airy perfume, which in this case doesn't mean it's insubstantial. Oakmoss in the base prevents that as do the unnamed "woods," but this is a fragrance that won't knock your socks off. Rather, it inspires a pair of moderately high, ladylike heels because this is a Sunday perfume--one suitable for contemplating heaven (ignoring for a moment that all days are). If an angel breathed florals in my direction, this is what I'd expect. Brightened by citrus, supported by oakmoss, lightly vanilla'd, this scent is ethereally beautiful--grace surrounding the wearer in the form of smell.

Doesn't appear to reach for the heights.
I never know what to make of Chant d’Aromes. It seems more of a powdery, aldehydic, lactonic floral than a true chypre. Yet the hint of a chypre base, more vetiver than moss, combined with the remnant of the peachy lactone of equal duration, is the only part of much interest. And this final bit is so faint I have to strain to make it out.

The powdery, indistinct opening used to give me a bit of hope that maybe the diaphanous air might coalesce into something haunting or interesting as Vol de Nuit does with its can’t-put-my-finger-on-it top notes. Unfortunately, the undefined but pleasant opening grows increasingly vague. Chant d’Aromes seems clean in that it’s blandly unadulterated, but not heightened or expansive like the best floral aldehydes. Despite aldehydic perfumes often being considered old-ladyish, there’s just something more girlish than womanly about CdA. Not so much naïve as inexperienced. It’s as if CdA could be any other indistinct designer sweet floral fragrance with a bit of aldehyde added.

CdA has a pretty smile, but not a lot of chat. Equally undemanding and unrewarding.

Femme à l'ombrelle
Chant d'Aromes delivers a discreet floral aura. A frolic and delicate character.

Interestingly, Chant d'Aromes presents all aspects of the perfume in a sparkling opening bouquet. The citrus, florals, moss, vanilla, they all do a brief 'hello!' and then return to the background awaiting their moment on stage. To me this formal round of introduction leaves an amazing impression. Classy and bright. A bit 'old money', silverware and crystal feeling. Turandot described it as a natural noblesse, I think that may be even the best description.

After this bright opening, the composition turns into a floral. In colors I would describe it as green and yellow. Soft teints, maybe pastel, almost impressionist a la Monet. Hence the title. In structure slightly powdery and soapy. Pure, almost innocent. The sillage is very soft and that fits exactly to the delicate quality of this perfume.

Eventually the perfume lands on a familiar chypre base. In my perception a blend of moss, sandalwood, vetiver and vanilla. All in all, a perfect fit for spring.

Peaceful, relaxing, pastel green fragrance, a little bit old school but this makes it even more charming.

Baby powder/chamomile wet wipes with a mild chypre accent in the foundation. Poor performance doesn't entice at all.
