Found Island
I seem to be one of this tiny demographic that liked Mahora. I see Mahora as the swan´s song of the Guerlain house before its creative death. They say a lot of horrible (fake) things about Mahora. They say most of it ended in the sewers of Paris after its commercial flop. Thanks god Mahora, this fictional continent that inspired Jean Paul Guerlain, didn´t sink, like Atlantis, in the sewage, but survived in the exclusive Mayotte, after some slight changes in the formula.

Mayotte is a beguiling rendition of ylang ylang. This note is the very center of the fragance, and its many facets (floral, green, cosmetic, bitter, spicy, ethereal) are enhanced by the other ingredients. The lush opening is a tropical white flower, more bitter than the most tropical tuberoses, although keeping the richness and creaminess of this genre. This exotism is boosted by a juicy plumeria, that makes the ylang fruitier, and there is a spicy note also (pikake surely)

But what makes Mayotte interesting is the earthiness that exudes. Is way more than a usual suntan tropical floral. Bitter strong vetiver, no doubt, with nuances of soil, and the warmth of sandalwood, round off this full bodied perfume.

After a while the fragance becomes airy, sweeter. Vanilla takes flight, and illuminates the ylang still reigning, along the fragant sandal. Mayotte is now a warm cosy oriental.

There is a gourmand facet in this fragance. It doesn´t smell edible, but FEELS edible,it has a chewable texture of warm, moist out of the oven bread (but you wont smell bread or pudding of any type) Sorry i cannot explain myself better.

Tuberose, wisely in a solicitous supporting role until the drydown, takes over the Ylang then, so the floralcy is never lost. The last sigh of Mayotte is a persistent woody oriental.

I didn´t like the name Mayotte. The invention of Mahora after a trip to the Guerlain´s plantations of ylang ylang as a vision of a new, inviting, better world was a message of hope for the new millenium. That was poetic. This plantation was in the island of Mayotte, and while it keeps the connection with Mahora, a regular geographic denomination seemed...reductive.

After smelling Mayotte, i see this choice of name with other eyes. Mayotte is real, i has never been there but i stepped with bare feet on its black wet soil, felt the warm rain and smelled cascades of ylang´s green-yellow petals hanging of its branches. Paradise is not a fiction name, is still on earth: you don´t have to dream with it when you can go there, protect it, fight for it. Mayotte is a masterpiece to keep.

A treasure!
Mayotte, I really wanted to test you. I was already in love with Mahora, that big and bold perfume that I wore around 2002, but I also wanted to test this one and then I could buy it at a special price. This is a wonderful scent as well, the fresh orange blossom, the tropical plumeria and ylang-ylang. A real Summer scent. A treasure!

A Dream in White
Who doesn’t know those days when absolutely nothing seems to go right?! From getting up to going to bed, small, medium, and larger disasters line up like pearls. You can say something as harmless as possible and be sure that you will be misunderstood, triggering further complications. The whole world seems to be inexplicably against you, constantly showing you the middle finger! Shit happens!

It was one of those days when I had my first and unplanned encounter with Guerlain's "Mayotte." I came home completely frazzled and slammed the front door behind me to keep the nasty world outside!

For my personal cooldown, I always choose a fragrance that brings me absolute well-being. I apply it to my wrist so that I can catch a whiff of it with every movement. It was supposed to be "Cuir Beluga." My "safe bet" where nothing can go wrong!

In theory, at least.

In my "beaten" state, I apparently made a mistake, because what wafted into my nose was definitely not "Cuir Beluga."

Of course, why not add this to the mix?! Murphy's Law, after all!

But wait a minute! What wafted into my nose was... heavenly! A fleeting moment of something fresh and green, but not really green, more like diluted green.
Then the fragrance changes its color, turning white. Bright and glaring white. The white floral splendor, primarily Frangipani, Tuberose, and Ylang-Ylang, lays itself like a floral carpet at my feet. Fortunately, there is no overwhelming wave of flowers that takes away every breath. Something keeps all the flowers in check. What this "something" is, I cannot say for the life of me, but that is probably the secret of this fragrance.

The base for me consists solely of the still-present white flowers combined with a lot of sandalwood and vanilla. If I had to paint a picture, it would consist of light yellow elements with white speckles.

Wonderful!

Somehow, this fragrance manages to push all the dark thoughts and feelings of that messed-up day into the background. The mood, no, my mood brightens with the progression of the scent, even drifting towards "friendly to cheerful." Incroyable! The fragrance wraps protectively around me, warming and comforting me. It leaves no room for negativity, brightening everything up. Life-affirming and looking forward.

I was very sure that I was just particularly "sensitive" to all kinds of affection that day, which is why I perceived the fragrance as so very positive. But further tests (in normal mode) showed me that the essence of "Mayotte" did not change.

And so, another Guerlain has made it into my collection. A Guerlain that makes me shine both inside and out. Can you ask for or even expect more from a fragrance? I think not.

The Second Attempt
As mentioned above, Mayotte is the reissue of Mahora, which more or less faded away without a trace. I too only gave Mahora 60% after testing a mini sample. Unfortunately, nothing remains of it, so I can no longer make a direct comparison. I must also admit that I didn’t know that Mayotte has its roots in Mahora when I stopped by Guerlain at Alsterhaus in Hamburg, actually just to repurchase Angelique Noire. Of course, one also tries a few things that one doesn’t know yet, and so I once again found myself holding a beehive.

I want to preface that my taste in fragrances doesn’t exactly change, but it does expand. I no longer flee from all floral scents. And especially when the melancholic tuberose, with its pronounced recognizability, is involved, I can now be swayed. That’s how it was with Mayotte for me. The perfume has a small, wistful smile. I also don’t think that frangipani and ylang-ylang dominate too much, as was criticized with Mahora. Perhaps the formula has really been changed. If so, then not to its detriment.

What I find particularly pleasant is that the mood of this fragrance remains consistently the same. Here we find neither a fresh top note, nor does the somewhat melancholic floral scent turn into an opulent oriental as the base settles in. Thus, Mayotte fits certain moods, emphasizes them, and has a special character for me.

When reading the pyramid, it sounds heavier and more humid than the perfume actually is. The sillage is subtle; one doesn’t leave a scent trail behind, yet the longevity, with its closeness to the skin, is remarkable.

Even though Mayotte is one of the more understated Guerlain fragrances, it has much more personality than, for example, the perfumes from the Elixir Charnel collection, making it a true enrichment to my slowly growing Guerlain collection.

Sisters Share Everything!
Joy and sorrow. Destiny, lovers, husbands, car, bicycle, table, and bed. When I thought about it, the film of the same name "Sisters Share Everything" from 1970 came to mind. Starring Ugo Tognazzi. A frivolous piece of work where 3 wealthy sisters share a husband. Well, if it’s fun. The "oldies" among us will surely remember the little film.
Mahora, which was supposed to save the house of Guerlain after a crisis, has sunk without a trace. A hope bearer from Jean-Paul Guerlain was passé. Mahora did not deserve that, and unfortunately, this beautiful little treasure is nowadays almost being sold for a song (My Mahora cost under €40).
Mahora is stunningly beautiful; one just has to embrace it. Mayotte is no less so. To untrained noses, they smell almost the same.
The difference is made by the frangipani flowers (Plumeria obtusa), which smell enchantingly sweet and intoxicating in Mayotte, and the almond blossom note (but also the hint of grated bitter almonds and pistachios in Mahora).
The sisters are a bit catty, as one wants to be more beautiful and dominant than the other.
But in Mayotte, the tuberose takes command, trumpet-like, yet without trampling down all the other flowers.
Mahora envelops itself in a ylang-ylang almond powder cloud and shows its conciliatory face on days like this.
Both are anyway under the same blanket, as they crawl under a bench made of the finest precious wood and pull a green blanket over their heads to exchange secrets, as only sisters who truly love each other know how.
I wish that everyone gives Mahora and also the little sister Mayotte a chance, as both fragrances are dreamily beautiful and the longevity (close to the skin) lasts more than 24 hours. I believe in a wish list, so that the big sister is not so alone.

Typical high-quality Guerlain, even without the Guerlinade: it's green, but still intensely floral, without being overwhelming. Classy!
