Plum Desire
Guerlain composes a fruity treasure. The notes are listed but to my nose, I only smell a few: a very juicy plum/rose compote and a drydown of the same fruitiness with a bit of a darker edge. I'm doubtful it is the patchouli, or perhaps it is but mixed with other spices like cinnamon. A really lovely perfume.

The sillage is incredible. It does remind me a lot of the Guerlain Oriental collection in terms of the power and profile of this scent. If you spray it on clothes, be prepared to be bathed in the scent for several days to come. There is a jammy, syrupy quality to this. The best part is that right under the juiciness, which lasts throughout the development of the perfume, there is a bright balsamic note that keeps things interesting. The quality and nuance of Guerlain is why these perfumes are world famous.

Fortunately, I am left satisfied with a similar perfume that hits all the same marks as NMOP: Plum Japonais. It also opens with a juicy plum note, though PJ is much sweeter while NMOP is sour. There are spices and woods that come out in both. PJ is much darker and broodier while NMOP is on the feminine side. Luckily, I prefer the widely available and fairly-affordable Plum Japonais. I love the NMOP bottle and the perfume is divine but PJ has a skankier/sweeter vibe.

P.S. I also detect a faint similarity between NMOP and Guerlain's latest Ambre Eternel.

To be placed among the great classics!
Thanks are due to Parfumo, who through a generous gift has allowed me to rectify the mistake I made last June in Paris: Like my predecessor, I failed to engage more closely with Ne m'Oubliez Pas, and due to its exclusivity, I haven't had the chance since then. But since yesterday, I realize that this was a nearly irreparable oversight:
Ne m'Oubliez Pas is absolutely magnificent!
In the currently trendy (due to the launch of Mon Guerlain) Quadrilobe bottle, it is already a visual classic beauty, the name referencing the early Guerlain fragrances (Mouchoir de Monsieur, Voilà Pourquoi J'Aimais Rosine, etc...) that have contributed to the rise of this brand to the top.
It is said that the fragrance is meant to be a tribute to the first Guerlain lipsticks, which were said to have a powdery yet sensual scent. Initially, I detected no hints of this and searched in vain for the connection in the fragrance. But the true greatness of this scent is, as so often, more than the sum of its parts, as the interplay of the fragrance notes.
Thierry Wasser has created something with this fragrance that is hard to find in today's world:
A perfume that smells as if it were created 70 years ago, yet does not smell outdated, too heavy, or even matronly. It is astonishing that I cannot find any reference to other newer Guerlain fragrances, although there are undeniable parallels or similarities with some of those created in recent years (aside from Guerlinade or Musquinade).
Ne m'Oubliez Pas occupies a special status.
Despite its youth, it feels as if it has an old soul. Beautiful, slightly dramatic, introverted.
The early development of the fragrance on the skin (I hesitate to refer to it as a top note in this context, as this first half hour has so much to offer) is a small sensation:
Spicy, almost savory notes combine with a variety of roses and a sweet plum note to create a warm, dark veil of scent.
The pièce de résistance of the fragrance is a sillage that recalls the old trendsetting classics, without being able to assign the scent to a specific category. Definitely not a gourmand, not an oriental, not oud, yet rather dark, possibly with slight chypre undertones due to a velvety mossiness in the base.
Nevertheless, Ne m'Oubliez Pas undergoes another transformation, leaning towards the powdery. Leaving behind the slightly sweet fruits and blooming roses, it appears softer, shyer, but also more feminine, the longer you give it time. This wonderful perfume does not simply fall asleep, but gently floats away on a (ah, now!!!) lipstick-powder cloud.
Conclusion: Too good to be found in just one single store in the world. Absolutely worth its price. Perfume artistry. Chapeau, Monsieur Wasser!

Je te dis vous
This is what the Lorraine singer Patricia Kaas called her third studio album in 1993, in German: 'Ich sage Sie zu dir.' In the title song, she tells how one can feel very close to a stranger.

Sometimes - not always, by far not always - when you experience a perfume for the first time, it is as if gates are opening, as if you are being drawn into a world full of beauty and stories. These are rare and fleeting moments that cannot be planned or forced, but must be gifted to you. Such a gift was recently bestowed upon me - at Maison Guerlain, a place where the chance may be a bit higher than elsewhere - like a mountain where shooting stars are more frequently seen because you are simply a little closer to the sky.

The shooting star, or rather the fragrance I mean here, is called Ne m'Oubliez Pas and is Guerlain's latest flagship exclusive, meaning it is only available here, at 68 Avenue des Champs-Élysées, Paris. It is costly, yes. And worth every sacrifice.

Unlike in German, where the third person plural serves as a polite form, French uses the second person plural for this: 'ne m'oubliez pas' thus means both 'Don't forget me' and 'Please don't forget me.' And it is this tension between the 'tu' and the 'vous' that embodies the soul of this breathtakingly, truly breathtakingly beautiful fragrance - the same tension that Patricia Kaas sang about twenty-three years ago in 'Je te dis vous.' Ne m'Oubliez Pas is, in every fiber of its being, 'grande parfumerie,' utilizing the keyboard on which Guerlain is capable of playing in every octave - it has ripe September plums and wonderfully opulent flowers, it has cinnamon and vanilla, it is proud and precious, intoxicatingly beautiful and a truly grand, vast world. There are no extraordinary, let alone scandalous aromas in Ne m'Oubliez Pas, and all the more do Guerlain's experience and expertise reveal themselves 'between the lines': its arrangement and orchestration, the dialogue between the fragrance notes - all of this is grand and masterful.

And yet it presents itself to me - as I stand here and smell it - soft and tender and intimate like a caress, a fondling. And it whispers a 'tu' in my ear and laughs very softly - here, at Maison Guerlain, 68 Avenue des Champs-Élysées, Paris. And no one else has noticed.

Conclusion: infinitely much beauty. Et je te dis vous.

Guerlain's Secret Heiress
Last year, I was still in Guerlain's boutique on the Champs Elysees, but I must have walked past the ultra-fine "Ne m'Oubliez Pas" (what a name!). Perhaps it was too far back in the women's section. Maybe the name sounded too extravagant. No matter, there are great perfumes that sweeten the day with such exquisite samples. And what a Grand Dame, Grand Perfume this is. From a time that had nothing to do with today's sugary waters & yet sweet enough to delight everyone even today. A Guerlain milestone & one of the most delicious scents I have ever smelled, without ever appearing flashy or naive. Classic, noble, even a bit vanillic - and somehow further away from the usually beautiful, but often somewhat bored-looking Guerlain DNA.

"Ne m'Oubliez Pas" aka the pompous plum with the strange name, smells so wonderful, worthy of a princess, yes, a queen. Or a brave king, as there are mossy undertones, almost a bit chypre, grounding the scent & making it absolutely wearable for modern princes. You just have to enjoy making a grand entrance. It is a voluminous plum, underlaid with silky moss & interwoven with the classic elegance of a Liz Taylor or Katharine Hepburn. Light vanilla merges with bright patchouli & velvety rose, leaving one almost breathless from all the nobility & splendor. Anyone who finds today's safe version of Guerlain a bit annoying must give this a chance & indulge in long-forgotten times - even if that means a trip to Paris ;)

Bottle: it doesn't get more elegant than this!
Sillage: luxurious, strong, yet never intrusive.
Longevity: 7 hours should suffice.

Conclusion: why not be more pompous & a bit off the beaten path, Guerlain? One of your most beautiful scents - of all time! It should actually be distributed more widely, not just exclusively in their chicest boutique... although it certainly fits best there.

The elegant and slightly eccentric great-aunt is visiting again.
I fancy I read somewhere that the name of this perfume is meant as a tribute to Guerlain's first lipstick. However, nothing smells less like lipstick than "Ne m'oubliez-pas." For me, this perfume is a nod to the Grandes Dames of the 70s and 80s before the anorexic melon waters made their entrance. So it's also somewhat of a shout towards "Don't forget what perfume once was!"

My first reflex was to think of the rosy-woody chypres with shoulder pads, think La Perla, Montana, Agent Provocateur, and the like, which certainly know how to push their way into the room before you even get close to the door. A tiny citrus wink is also present in the top note, for the fraction of a second. Mini-reference to Shalimar, family honor and all that.
Overall, however, the opening is more fruity-spicy than rosy. Whether it's plum with cardamom, I can't say.

In its further development, "Ne m'oubliez pas" cannot deny its relation to its distant grand-niece "Ma petite robe noire couture." Although it appears much more complex and elegant than "couture." The prequel, so to speak, that was launched later.
After about an hour, a certain contrasting woody bitterness sets in for me, which reminds me a bit of "Magie Noire" and has thus prompted me to draw the connection to the 70s. Here, the scent evokes a lot of nostalgia for me, to my parents' dinner parties. The kind of parties where the women would arrive all dolled up in fur coats and a cloud of fragrance, accompanied by cigar smoke and cognac.

All those who have fond memories of 70s and 80s perfumes and long for their favorites from back then (reformulations, ownership changes, etc.) might find a lovely new acquaintance in "Ne m'oubliez-pas." The certain punch effect is there, but without shoulder pads, permanent waves, and blue mascara. This scent, amidst all the nostalgia, is also a happy scent, modernly constructed, elegant, high-quality in content, and rounded in the finish - as one would still say at dinner parties today...

Can I say that this Guerlain, which I've been eagerly waiting for, smells like armpit sweat in a polyester blouse, or will I be exparfumoized?

Spiced plum with a distinctly sensual note, which becomes too overwhelming for me over time. No Guerlain bonus from me here.

Incredibly fine-fruity-spicy mix of plum, rose & cinnamon, subtly spiced with patchouli, amber, and (dark) vanilla. Elegant & sophisticated.
