An Explosive Neroli and Spice Creation
This is my first review, and I feel compelled to write it due to the surprising number of low ratings regarding this fragrance’s sillage and longevity.
Among my collection of over 70 niche fragrances, this is without a doubt one of the strongest in both sillage and longevity — it truly is a powerhouse. I rarely go for more than two sprays.
While I can understand that some may not personally enjoy the scent profile, rating it poorly for its performance is, in my opinion, entirely unjustified.
Moreover, I find it to be a very creative interpretation of Neroli. Personally, I don't own any other fragrance that combines Neroli with turmeric and spices in such an original and striking way.

Unique neroli with sandalwood notes - a bit expensive
Néroli Plein Sud is the second neroli fragrance in Guerlain’s L’Art & La Matière collection, the other one being Neroli Outrenoir. Delphine Jelk is the perfumer on record on Parfumo, but it is always tricky with Guerlain L’Art & La Matière fragrances. This review is based on a sample I bought from a US decanter.

The notes listed by the perfumer on Guerlain’s website are neroli, turmeric, cinnamon, vetiver and sandalwood. Parfumo also lists ginger and clove as notes, but I surmise these notes to be olfactory illusions produced by the combination of neroli with the other spices. I will rely on my nose to present the olfactory pyramid, hoping to avoid both the subjective nature of Parfumo and Guerlain’s marketing influence.

Néroli Plein Sud opens with a lovely intense neroli accompanied by a minor note of turmeric. Cinnamon if present is too subdued for me to identify as a stand-alone note. The opening, though lovely, feels a bit generic because we are familiar with this neroli accord from many other citrus perfumes. The mood brightens significantly when the heart notes bring up the sandalwood and the vetiver. These notes hum along harmoniously throughout the life of the perfume with very minor development. The base notes and dry down are neroli and sandalwood, with hints of vetiver. When you reach this stage, the sharp bitterness of neroli is tamed, leaving behind only a lovely citrus note. The personality of Neroli Plein Sud is that of an elegant workhorse, inoffensive and rarely drawing attention from anyone except diehard fragrance enthusiast. I could easily smell the neroli on the lady having lunch next to me yesterday, which she was kind enough to confirm to be Néroli Plein Sud.

The performance of Néroli Plein Sud is excellent, but within the parameters expected for a citrus fragrance. The neroli and sandalwood lasts on my skin for more than eight hours, which is quite an achievement for a citrus. The sillage is good, easily detectable in the wake of the wearer but unlikely to project over long distances.

In summary, Néroli Plein Sud is a beautiful neroli fragrance that exemplify the quality of raw materials used by Guerlain and the skill of its perfumers. Notwithstanding the unnecessary namedropping of Antoine de Saint Exupéry and the mildly colonialist language in the description, Néroli Plein Sud remains an excellent fresh fragrance. But some nagging doubts remain in my mind. In my review of Guerlain Neroli Outrenoir, I suggested a thought experiment, visualizing perfumes in nameless, bland bottles in the discount bin in a low-end department store. Would I still buy them? Just as with Neroli Outrenoir, I am uncertain about Neroli Plein Sud when presented that way. This is especially challenging because of the abundance of good neroli fragrances, many already in my collection. I may eventually buy Neroli Outrenoir or Neroli Plein Sud, with the former having a slight edge as of now. If you are looking for a neroli with sandalwood notes, you can get a 20 ml flacon of Neroli Plein Sud for $90 these days from Guerlain. A full bottle for $395 is stretch too far for me.

4711 takes flight
It may be a bit cliche to associate the scent of neroli with 4711 eau de cologne, but that's immediately what comes to mind when initially spraying Neroli Plein Sud. The opening of this fragrance is unabashedly similar to the iconic EDC, however it really takes off as it dries down, and charts a different course for itself, a course that makes Neroli Plein Sud that answer to the age old challenge of how to make a version of 4711 that lasts performs and develops better. As previously mentioned, the fragrance opens up with a sharp blast of fresh, citrusy neroli, which sticks around for quite some time. As it dries though, it becomes very 'cologne-y' if that makes any sense at all. It smells like a very traditional EDC in a sense, but with a much richer character to it. There is some notable spice and zest coming from the ginger and other spices, but there's also a very earthy freshness to it that comes from the sandalwood and vetiver that really tops this fragrance off nicely. This has got to be one of the most beautifully developing fragrances from L'Art & La Matière, and one that I think many will enjoy, especially if that classic scent profile is something you lean into.

Neroli Plein Sud was one of my most anticipated fragrances from L'Art & La Matière, and for me it exceeded my expectations. Neroli has become a bit of a flat and boring note to me in recent times, but this fragrance manages to use it in a manner that's both traditional and unique at the same time. It is yet another example of Delphine Jelk's sheer ability to compose a high quality and unique fragrance (despite what some say.)

Surprisingly gentle and familiar
Neroli is not easy for me. I often get tired of neroli fragrances quickly, or I don't like them from the start. Neroli Outrenoir was too good for me after a short time, Nerolia Vetiver was so pungent and refreshing that the fragrance was only used on hot days or better still not at all (and that after I had bought a bottle of the stock bees, in my youthful recklessness). However, a new, probably more loyal customer was quickly found. Now for the new Neroli Plein Sud, which makes me think of summer, sun, freedom, travel fever and luggage, even from the Saint-Exupery-inspired advertising. However, it also reminds me of Louis Vuitton, from whose stable Guerlain also comes, and the horses of this group are getting closer and closer....
But after I had resisted testing NPS for long enough, I was sneakily forced to try it just because I had wandered into a Guerlain boutique.
Now I had no excuse. Without much goodwill or anticipation, I sprayed the fragrance on the back of my hand. Yes, of course, I thought, Nerolia Vetiver, just not so brizzelig, it's not Aqua Allegoria.
But after a few minutes, a mangolassi-like spice cream reached me. India? Long-distance travel? Tropical helmets? Explorers?
Beautiful, enchanting, familiar and yet inspiring. How can that be?
I don't know how. But that's how it is.
A fragrance that picks me up and takes me far away, with its 70s vibes, the memories of Charlie by Revlon paired with the summer freshness of vetiver, the bed of exotic spices and the sun cream note of Sun. It sounds mainstream, but it's not. Because we mustn't forget the secret ingredient, which of course I don't know myself, but there is something magical about it that makes me close my eyes and feel a golden calm and warmth. It can't just be the cinnamon!
Anyway, I buy the large bottle in the luxury version. And I want to visit a spice garden in Sri Lanka again soon....

The somewhat different infusion

Guerlain Neroli Plein Sud is a fragrance that reminds me of a relaxing sauna infusion right from the start. The freshness of the initially pungent neroli greets you like a hot gust of wind from the sauna master, invigorating all the senses while creating a feeling of relaxation and serenity. But this is just the beginning of this soothing and seductive journey.
The development of this fragrance is unique: initially almost pungent and fresh, after a while a warm, soft base unfolds, which is carried by ginger and spicy nuances The development becomes more and more beautiful so that you don't want to leave the sauna at all.

The ginger note brings a subtle spiciness into play, which creates an interesting depth. This combination of freshness and spice is a special interplay of opposites that harmonizes perfectly.

The complexity of Neroli Plein Sud is very impressive.

The freshness slowly gives way to a soothing warmth reminiscent of a cozy spa evening by the fireplace. The versatility of the fragrance makes it wearable both during the day and in the evening.

The longevity and sillage are really good by Guerlain standards. It leaves a subtle yet seductive trail of fragrance that attracts attention without being loud. Ideal for special occasions or for everyday use when you want to treat yourself to something exclusive.

Guerlain Neroli Plein Sud, A fragrance that enchants with its delicate yet complex composition and elegant warmth. This fragrance is a perfect choice for anyone who loves fresh scents but doesn't want to lose their warmth and depth.

Guerlain has once again proven why it is one of the master houses of perfumery.

Another complex and very natural neroli. Here, unlike its brother, you will notice more spices which give more freshness

Soapy neroli into a spicy skanky orange blossom. You need to like dirty white florals to enjoy this. $400 is egregious.

I am not a white floral enjoyer for the most part. I would not buy this, but I'm impressed by it. Very fresh, citrusy floral.

People are saying the neroli is overpowering which I agree, but after it drys down the spices really come out and it has a beautiful ginger note.

An aggressive Neroli! So strong; barely smell the spice turmeric, turning it arid toward finale. Oud Yuzu is its cousin, mistaken for a twin
