I've tested Tobacco Honey two times at Holt Renfrew, always at the edge of going for a full bottle then finally backing out at the last moment. Why? Because before Tobacco Honey, I've never loved ANY fragrances containing notes of tobacco (also I strongly dislike leather, suede and alcoholic beverage notes, but that's another story). With this one... I was still hesitating. I love, love this fragrance, but I wasn't sure my hometown was ready for it and I wasn't sure I could pull it off. Thankfully, I spotted a 10ml official small dabber bottle on a fragrance group marketplace and decided to go for it so I could finally make up my mind. Here goes my review!
Guerlain definitely knows how to use honey in its products. I mean... They've made the bee their emblem and have a complete skincare line dedicated to the power of honey. I was expecting as much from them (and even more). Gotta say, they definitely exceeded my expectations. Honey is raw, golden nectar, straight from the beehive, not quite unlike
Bee. It's precious, sweet, with an animalic undertone, thick on the skin as it wafts through the air. Tobacco follows with its deep, profound, sensual woodiness. A bit dry, but not too much. The other notes act as support. Tonka bean and vanilla work their magic as they unite to provide an amazing sweetness that pairs well with everything. Anisseed, clove and sesame give a "grainy", earthy and organic aspect while oud provides this oriental, animalic accord. Sandalwood is at its creamiest, elevating honey and tobacco to new heights. If the beginning is a bit loud and a statement in itself, as time passses, the fragrance mellows out a bit more and smoothens itself. Woody, creamy and sweetness blend themselves well together on my skin until the very end.
Tobacco and honey: a play between light and darkness. A scent I see myself burying into during the colder months. Winter might even be the best month to wear this fragrance as its heaviness does not make it suitable for warmer weather. It's got so much depth and complexity...
EDIT: Never thought tobacco would be a note I'd wear, but here I am: I finally went for a full bottle. It's sufficiently different from the rest of my collection, stayed in the back of my mind even after buying the dabber and I thought: if I love it, why not get it? My collection is supposed to be made of fragrances that wow me or that I see as art and this one falls into both categories. Which is what decided me into getting a full bottle finally!
