The Mediterranean
If you've travelled in the Mediterranean (Greek islands, Cyprus), if you know how fig leaves smell and can appreciate this association, you'll like it.

It's a pleasant summer scent. It's stylish, cool.

But for my taste, however, the note of sweet melon is too strong and I wish that fig was even more prominent.

Absolutely repulsive mix of creamy, green, spicy and medicinal
I've had my fair share of perfumes I've disliked over the years I've invested in this hobby, but nothing I've had to scrub off my skin per se. Well this has changed with this one. I was able to leave it on my skin for 10 minutes before immediately going to the bathroom and trying to scrub it off. That's how bad my experience was with it.

The beginning is a flagrant green hue of deep green leaves. I can applaud the perfumer for making this a pretty photorealistic note of greenery (almost dirty green). There's also some type of creaminess that mingles in with the green leaf note. I wasn't a fan of it, but at that point, I was ready to leave it on my skin and see where it'd go. That's when things took a turn for the worst. There's a medicinal / plasticky / synthetic / woody note that rose up and started altering the scent. When I brought my wrist to my nose I had to clench my teeth when trying to sniff it. That's how repulsive it was. Even now, I have a lot of difficulties putting into words what the scent smelled like. I'm absolutely floored as to what happened here. I usually love white tea, sandalwood and musks. I'm a bit more unfamiliar with figs, but I've smelled it in some perfume. So is it the galbanum? The green leaf? I'm still not sure. Even after scrubbing it off, there was a remanent waft of that atrocious note that wrecked everything. I could also smell the fig note trying to peak out from underneath with a fruity, spicy undertone.

I've got to say... Maybe it's that creamy, green and fruity / spicy mix that turned me off. Maybe it's the galbanum. Or the green leaf note. I'm still not sure. What I do know is I'm glad I got to try it out with a decant. From the bottle, the perfume seemed fine, but on my skin, it's a completely different story. Do not blind-buy this perfume.

Wrapped in Leaves
For me, the scent perfectly captures my idea of crisp, not too sweet leaves that have been freshly plucked or crushed. Fig is slightly noticeable, but for me, the fresh, herbaceous green leaf dominates.
Over time, it becomes a bit milder, but other notes do not stand out to my nose. Athenean keeps its promise from the first impression.

This can be a spectacular fragrance for those who want to feel at home in a fresh pile of leaves. For me, it is.

Herb-green Bitter Fig
For three-quarters of the time, the grassy fig is dominated by a dull-bitter galbanum note, which makes it appear strangely muted - almost languidly hanging in the Greek midday sun. This bitter quality reminds me of the orientation of Profumum Roma's "Ichnusa." However, there it leans towards a minty-herbaceous freshness, while here it is distinctly toned down. Somehow "washed out" and slightly diffuse. It's as if a clear frame is missing.

In the last third, the bitterness recedes somewhat, and an interesting earthy-nutty tone develops with a very delicate coconut creamy base. This impression is reminiscent of the drydown of L'Artisan Parfumeur's "Premier Figuier," but it doesn't quite reach its level of differentiation and refinement.

As is often the case with Heeley fragrances, this is a slightly special, quite nature-close interpretation and overall an acceptable, herb-green fig scent, which, in my view, falls quite a bit short compositionally compared to reference figs like "Philosykos" and "Premier Figuier."

Green and sweet/fruity shades are perfectly balanced in Athenean. My favourite fig scent, it describes adorably my idea of summer.

Never really had to scrub off a perfume in 2 years of fragrance hobby, but my clean track record had to be broken by this one. Repulsive.

The combination of bitter green and sweet fig is pleasantly tense, yet rather harmonious: successful, without being captivating.

The galbanum gives the fig a bitter-smoky twist at first, which fades into the sandalwood cream base over time. It's okay.

Unripe figs with a lot of galbanum, bitter-green, unsweetened, developing into a creamy-milky coconut vibe with a hint of cucumber. It doesn't quite reach me.

Herb green fig. The grass/leaf note is dominated by a dull, slightly bitter galbanum. It develops a nutty aroma late on, with subtle coconut.

Sparkling in the sun, a river rolls through the valley. It smells green and lush of crushed leaves, soft earth, and clean aquatic notes.

Green fig, bitter undertones, becomes increasingly creamy and later woody. Fresh from afar, but oddly dull up close.
