Definitely Sweet and Bold … but Was it Worth the Hype?
Last summer, I embarked on a fragrance journey exploring scents at the Macy's flagship store in New York City. Among the vast array of fragrances, a few stood out among the various fragrances that were offered as samples. Jean Paul Gaultier's Ultra Male was one of them.

As the hype surrounding this fragrance has died down since its release in 2015, this presents the perfect opportunity to assess whether Ultra Male truly lived up to its earlier acclaim.

----

Ultra Male's opening is a familiar blend of mint and lavender that is reminiscent of the original Le Male fragrance, but it comes with an added twist. The infusion of a juicy pear note adds a fruity touch to the fresh introduction that is impossible to ignore. It is a surprising, yet welcome shift.

During the dry down, Ultra Male ditches the freshness for a sweet and gourmand profile because of the cinnamon and vanilla notes. The presence of lingering amber notes adds to the fragrance's overall sweetness. None of this is a surprise, as this is also present in the original Le Male.

Overall, Ultra Male attempts to be a daringly sweeter adaptation of the iconic Le Male scent, and it succeeds beyond expectations. Whether you are a lady or a gentleman, if you have an affinity for sweet fragrances, this scent will leave you absolutely enamored. Conversely, if sweet scents annoy you, encountering Ultra Male can be a nightmare.

----

It is hard to discuss the Jean Paul Gaultier Ultra Male bottle design (and by extension, every Le Male bottle) without bringing up the iconic mannequin bottles with their distinct crotch bulge. I do not have strong feelings about the bottle design, but it is notably divisive. Some individuals love the unique shape that differentiates itself from other bottles. For others, the bottle design is enough to turn them away from the fragrance. At least the midnight blue opaque coloring is a pleasant touch.

That being said, the functionality of the bottle takes precedence over its aesthetics. With Ultra Male, simply pulling the pin and pressing the nozzle produces a satisfactory mist with minimal effort.

Ultimately, while the bottle design may not have universal appeal, the functionality of the spray mechanism is commendable.

----

For performance, Ultra Male is a standout among designer fragrances currently available on the market. With just two sprays, this scent projects throughout a moderate-sized room for 4-6 hours, leaving behind an impressive sillage trail that lingers for at least 15 minutes after the wearer has left the area.

Also, Ultra Male's longevity is simply unmatched, lasting on the skin for an impressive 12 hours - enough to see you through an entire night with ease.

On one hand, if someone seeks a subtle fragrance, Ultra Male is NOT that scent. However, for the attention seeker, it delivers a powerful performance and is sure to leave an impression (positive or negative) on those who experience the potent projection and remarkable longevity.

----

With seasonal use, Ultra Male presents an interesting dichotomy. The scent profile is a fascinating blend of sweet and fresh notes should make it a versatile fragrance across different seasons, but that is not the full story.

Its strength and intensity make it ideal for cold weather, and it works exceptionally well in winter. However, the fresh and fruity aroma of Ultra Male also makes it an excellent choice for spring or during summer nights, where it can add a touch of sweetness to the warm weather.

That said, Ultra Male's sweetness can be overpowering and cloying when worn during the summer daytime when it is hottest. Similarly, the fresh scent can work in the fall, but even as a sweet scent, it can feel somewhat out of place with the autumnal atmosphere.

While using a strong fragrance like Ultra Male in certain social situations such as the office or the gym might not be the brightest idea because of the strong sillage, it truly comes into its own in other settings. For instance, during leisure time spent outdoors or at a large indoor party, this fragrance is an absolute showstopper that draws attention and helps create a vibrant atmosphere. Perfect for people who want to stand out.

And while Ultra Male might not always be a surefire hit on a date night. It is a winner if your partner loves sweet fragrances. (If not, well, you have a charming personality, right?)

----

I must note that the fragrance world is currently moving towards fresher, more subtle scents, which is why Ultra Male fell to the wayside. However, in my opinion, the hype behind the fragrance was genuine.

However, the hype is meaningless if you are not a fan of sweet fragrances, or you seek a scent that is more intimate than attention-grabbing. In these instances, Ultra Male is not the right scent for you.

That said, if you are in the market for a year-round sweet and fresh evening fragrance that will turn heads when you enter a room, then Ultra Male may be just what you are looking for. Those who appreciate this bold, attention-grabbing scent are sure to be equally impressed by its longevity and impressive performance.

Ultra Mâle's Ratings are Artificially Suppressed
Tl;dr: There are haters who are giving this fragrance an unfairly low rating, but if you set aside your preconceived notions, you just might find you really like Ultra Mâle.

After more than a decade of not wearing any fragrance, I got the urge to curate a small collection of fragrances for my personal use. I set out to examine fragrances independently, without regard to brand renown or general popularity -- in other words, to do like Toucan Sam and "follow my nose." Because when you're out and about giving meaning to the existence of your fragrance, allowing yourself and others to experience and enjoy it, they neither know nor care what shape bottle it came from or even which brand it is. All they care about is what their nose is telling them about the scent you exude. That's the simple fact of wearing and enjoying fragrances.

My methodology was to sample each fragrance at the opening, put each tester strip in a separate Ziploc bag, and sample it again after the dry-down. And so it went with approximately 300 samplings over the course of a couple months. As the samplings went on and my confidence in my favorites grew stronger, I began forming my collection. Special thanks to big sales before and after Mother's Day and Father's Day 2021 in the U.S., such as 30% off sales from Lancôme, YSL, and Mugler, as well as a couple 40%-50% discounts on other individual fragrances. Which as a side-note serves as a reminder that patience and strategic/opportunistic buying can save you a lot of money while curating your collection, especially if you buy from retailers.

Back to my review of Jean Paul Gaultier's Ultra Mâle. I loved it. Before I even sampled it, I immediately hated the bottle. I mean, the dick bulge is just too much -- what heterosexual male wants to hold that bottle and have his fingers brush up against a dude's crotch? But again, I didn't allow myself to care about the bottle because that was only for the eyes. And in this olfactory journey, the nose was to be judge, jury, and executioner. The judgment: an overall 9/10 on the scent. Both during the opening and dry-down, it was sweet and inviting with no trace of questionable or off-putting smells.

So, why is this not rated more highly in the Parfumo community? My theory is that there are two reasons. First, many people don't like the bottle, so they exact revenge on the fragrance for a marketing issue. Not fair. And second, people overreact to hype in a negative way. Maybe if you never heard of the fragrance, you would have given it an 8/10, but because everyone else said "OMG 10/10 MUST BUY!!!", you feel the need to take it down a peg so you rate it 6/10. Again, not fair to the fragrance itself.

In case you want to re-examine whether you have fairly rated Ultra Mâle, maybe you can take a look at the nose behind the fragrance. Did you ever think about who created this? Hm... it's Francis Kurkdjian. Of Baccarat Rouge 540 fame. And like 540 and dozens of Kurkdjian's other fragrances, Ultra Mâle is a high-quality work of art. Maybe you can perform the mental exercise of disassociating the fragrance itself from its bottle, from its alias ("The Clubbing King"), and from its hype, and simply let your nose decide. I guarantee the reviewers who gave this fragrance an unbelievably low 0.5 rating for the scent would realize they were just "taking it down a peg" and would admit their rating is artificially suppressed. And hey, maybe overly-sweet isn't your thing and it's only a 6/10, but you are doing others an injustice by fraudulently manipulating the ratings by giving it a 0.5/10. Because as a statement of objective fact, a rating of 0.5/10 would apply categorically to the worst smells you can possibly imagine -- literally raw sewage or worse -- and I cannot conceive of a human who would ever rank this fragrance as being anywhere near the worst smells on earth.

In summary, it is my opinion that the ratings should be higher, and each individual should try this fragrance for oneself. Forget about the bottle, forget about anyone else's opinion (unless you're wearing it primarily for your "special someone"), and just let your nose decide. Beyond that, you might already be aware that the sillage and longevity are considered to be on the higher end of the performance spectrum, so you merely need to determine whether the price/value proposition is right for you. Already have five other sweet frags? Maybe skip this. But for me, starting from zero, I happily added this to my collection.

Addictive Sweet Bomb
This perfume really introduced me to the world of perfumery. It's definitely for noses that appreciate sweet perfumes! Those who aren't used to fragrances like this might think, as mentioned in some reviews, that it tends more towards the "feminine" side, but I don't share that view. The opening is wonderful, with notes of pear and lavender, then evolving into a more vanilla/cinnamon side of the fragrance. In my opinion, this perfume continues to be "different" in the world of sweet masculine perfumes today. As for performance, I would say that the old batches stand out and, within the Jean Paul Gaultier house itself, Le Male Elixir easily surpasses this one. It's a perfume with great projection, "announcing" its arrival wherever it goes. I would say that it can be used without fear on colder nights (winter/autumn), but for warm climates it's not so interesting, as it can become quite cloying for the people around you! A great perfume and a reminder: you have to like sweets!

2020 batch is quite strong
So i was a little bit afraid when i ordered online a 125ml version of it. When it arrived the first thing that came to my mind when i smelled it was: PURE POWER.
At the first sniffs it is a very strong pear and bubblegum bomb. It has a very good sillage for around 2 hours then it slowly becomes skin nearly with the time. And that is the period when this scent becomes the most pleasing. It slowly turns into a sweet and sophisticated vanilla type scent.
The thing i love the most about it that it isnt linear.. it has so many faces as i mentioned.
I think it performs the best in a little bit windy weather. It can be also worn in summer imo, just use 1 or 2 sprays bc otherwise it can be overwhelming.
If you love sweet type fragrances, then it is a must have for you, also a great clubbing fragrance.
Its bottle and packaging is very unique.
I got a 125ml version for aroudn 70 euros so i think its ok price for this quality.

Edit: This masterpiece received the most compliment on me.

I remember the first spray and was in amazement! The fruity smell like cotton candy to me! I was like "Yes!!!". Thanks to one of Jeremy Fragrance's videos. Jeremy tends to overhype some brands, but this one was right on the money! I also love the dry down and how the sweet smell morphs into a clean slight fresh soapy smell, simply amazing! I love it!

I love eating pears. What I don't love is this pear fragrance. The top notes are an absolute horror. Other notes seem absent to my nose.
