A lovely, inoffensive musk fragrance - functional, not magical
Musc Pallas is a lovely, conventional musk fragrance from Jovoy that does not cover any new ground. It is inoffensive, versatile and not too expensive. If you are looking for these qualities in a musk fragrance, Musc Pallas will work for you. Musc in this name is not the secretion from the musk deer, but the group of synthetic chemicals commonly used as the base in fragrances, laundry detergents and hand soaps. Common polycyclic musk odorants are galaxolide, tonalide, and muscenone, and the common nitro musk compounds are musk ketone, musk xylene and musk ambrette. Musc Pallas was created by Vanina Muracciole, the perfumer who comes closest to being Jovoy’s in-house perfumer. This review is based on a 15 ml bottle purchased directly from Jovoy.
The notes listed for Musc Pallas are ambrette seeds, bergamot, peach, iris, musk, and tonka bean. This is a very conventional musk pyramid, also seen in fragrances like Diptyque Fluer de Peau. I get ambrette seeds, iris and musk in the opening, but not a lot of peach or bergamot. If these notes were not disclosed, I wouldn’t even mention them. Similarly, I don’t also find much of tonka bean in the bottom. There is almost no progression in Musc Pallas. All this makes Musc Pallas a single-minded musk fragrance with powdery floral nuances.
The performance of Musc Pallas on my skin is very good. It shows a characteristic feature of musk compounds; high longevity coupled with low projection. The sillage is modest as expected from these chemicals. It will work in an office setting, if you don’t mind the light powdery musk quality. The high longevity and low projection may be an advantage in this setting.
Musc Pallas is a qualified recommendation from me. As I said earlier, it is a lovely inoffensive musk and nothing more. It smells very similar to Mrs Meyer’s Rain Water hand soap, and that may be the intended goal. It will never become my favorite, nor will I use it frequently. But I can’t complain about the 15 ml bottle that cost me $42 from Jovoy.
