Finally, you can imagine the land
You’re standing on the docks of a Mediterranean city. The sun beats down on the white stone of the ground and the walls. A sailboat has just arrived. People are whispering — they say it’s come from far away, from the ends of the earth even. You shrug. People have started talking about the Earth being round, but you know they’re wrong.
A man disembarks. He sees you and calls out. Small, slightly flushed, smelling of rum—no doubt from the barrels in the hold—he tells you he’s a merchant, and that you’re the first person lucky enough to discover what he’s brought back from his journey.
You thank him but decline, and walk a few steps… then stop. There’s something strange. The merchant doesn’t follow. He doesn’t plead or try to persuade you. He just watches you, smiling still.
You have a little time. Why not?
He sets a large, dark leather suitcase on the ground — as if it had been brushed with blueberry. He opens it, and pulls out a sack of fragrant beans he calls cardamom, strange black sticks called vanilla, some dates, and jasmine.
The opening of the case stirs the air — it hits your face, and suddenly, you're sailing across the sea, to a land you can finally, truly imagine.
