Emilia Romagna
I grew up in a foster family and when I was nine years old, my foster dad died. This broke my heart and that of the rest of my family and tore the sandy fairytale castle of my childhood down to its foundations. But sometimes it is strange, because bad memories are often the sea that can drive us to the islands of the most blissful moments that we have kept in our hearts despite everything - and to which we have merely lost the compass.
A small compass is this perfume here, this scent of sun cream, coconuts and creamy flowers that immediately takes me back to my happiest childhood memories.
We used to go to Italy every year during the summer vacations. That was our family vacation together, where we always traveled with the whole family. Emilia St. Romagna, Catholica, emerald green sea, thick macaroni swimming in creamy tomato sauce, never-ending summer nights with the children of Italian workers. The hotel, with its white linen curtains, the
sun-drenched beige stairwell and the countless green potted plants under the fairytale archways (I got lost in this stairwell countless times as a child...)
This perfume conjures up memories of a happy beach day when I was a little girl sitting by the sea in my Snoopy swimsuit and a hazelnut ice cream and my mom slathered centimetre-thick layers of sun cream on my skin. Every now and then, a cheerfully laughing man would come by and say to her, "Coco Di Mama! Coco Di Mama!" He had a colorful striped box strapped to his stomach and sold various things; toys, Italian food, waffles, even coconuts.
Every day I was impatient, every day I waited until the scent of sun cream had evaporated to the minimum so that I could finally sink into the waves like "Ariel the Mermaid", together with my father who watched over me and my dog paddling like King Triton incarnate. And built fairytale castles out of sand with me.
That is the most beautiful thing about the sands of time.
You think this fairytale castle of sand has been blown away by the wind and will never reappear, because the person who built it with you is gone. You can't get it back.
But the sand is still there.
And when the first pain has passed, it is your decision to take it with you and create a monument to these wonderful memories.
And THAT shines forever.
