Green Disappointment
Unfortunately, I can't help myself: some key stimuli simply appeal to me, and I am completely the willing victim. There are certain fragrance houses that I once really liked many years ago; they can disappoint me as often as they want now, yet I still test their scents time and again, without exception. Some bottles have a design language, proportions, curves, edges, and knobs that I just have to hold in my hand. Certain colors stand out from the sea of usual bottles so much that I simply have to test them. This is also true for the fragrance tested here, "Eau de Lacoste L.12.12 pour Lui Eau Fraîche."
Aside from the fact that it's hard to remember the name in the correct order, as a Latin speaker, I also struggle a bit with the pronunciation. However, I should still have my French colleague teach it to me and test whether the inclined perfume saleswomen can understand and categorize it accordingly should I ask for this scent. Sorry, I'm starting to get a bit malicious again.
Anyway, a new Lacoste fragrance is on the shelf, and I have to check it out. In the brand new 30-meter-long shelf wall of the equally brand new Müller store, it is the only bottle in the juicy-fresh green of a Granny Smith apple - that grabs attention. The well-known L.12.12 bottle has not changed; the hand-friendly design is drawn into my hand as if attracted by a tractor beam.
Let's approach the scent from the bottle. Wrapped in an embossed green-white box that reflects the structure of the Pique fabric from the polo, adorned with a simple yet meaningful print. The bottle is the well-known rounded square of the L.12.12 series, again featuring the Pique structure on the sides. It is opaque, with a green-white gradient, solid and heavy. It feels pleasant and grippy in the hand, just the way I like it. The only embellishment is the well-known crocodile. Under the simple knob is a good spray head that performs its job precisely and beautifully dosed. That's how a bottle should be. I know I’m repeating myself, but everything still holds true. In terms of these external values, everything has once again been done right.
The disillusionment follows, as so often, closely behind. The content once again does not hold what the bottle promises. The name foretells it; it is a fresh scent. Unfortunately, it is a freshness that we know from the entire range of household goods, from dish soap to window cleaner to the particularly thorough disinfectants for toilet ceramics. And I dare say that in a blind tasting, no one from the development, production, marketing, or sales teams of Lacoste and Coty would be able to sniff out a difference.
The scent mentioned here smells fresh like various citrus fruits and has a nuance that we both love and hate as an aquatic note, but unfortunately in a combination that has already been smelled a hundred times, conveying nothing, absolutely nothing new. Other aromas or notes unfortunately do not find their way into my nose. Perhaps it’s just that my nose has already been thoroughly overwhelmed, as the impression of a cleaning product with its synthetic-alcoholic character comes strongly to the forefront. It is penetrating and overshadows all the beauty that might have been intended for the scent. The olfactory experience is not pleasant for me, not at all enjoyable, but instead creates the urge to wash myself.
At first, the scent is strong, harsh, but the cleaning note fades quickly. What remains is an indefinable citrus aroma, which also disappears to the point of unrecognizability after about two hours. This is not a satisfying performance for me, neither in terms of longevity nor scent progression. I am somewhat at a loss, as I can't think of a target group to whom I would recommend this scent. I’m not even sure if one does oneself and one’s environment a favor by wearing this scent for a 90-minute workout at the gym.
Overall, "Eau de Lacoste L.12.12 pour Lui Eau Fraîche" is, for me, a complete and utter disappointment. Aside from the beautiful, colorful bottle, I can't find anything great about the scent. I bid farewell with the question of whether someone might want to give me their empty bottle someday, as I do believe that the bottle would look nice as a splash of color among all my other bottles.
