Melodic introduction to aoud
Not a new melody at all, but a pleasant one. A fine balance between deep aoud notes, leathery warmth and oriental spices (saffron, clove). This well-known Montale-tune is amplified by notes of Egyptian jasmine and a faint rose in the background, but the accent is clearly on the spices, the leather and the aoud. A touch of cedarwood, sandalwood and amber was added in the drydown, but I can't say that "Melody" is ultra-strong. Is it only me or would others also say that the staying-power of many Montale fragrances has become less remarkable? "Melody" offers medium longevity (4hs on my skin). Since my sample has to be dabbed on, I can't tell you much about the sillage, because I only applied some drops of the perfume onto my wrist. Nevertheless, "Melody" doesn't seem to be a sillage-monster like "Black Aoud" or "Sweet Oriental Dream". It's a scent I'd recommend to everybody who is looking for a seasonless aoud-fragrance which is neither too pungent nor too heavy. The ideal choice for people who still need to discover if the specific "Montale-sytle", this Europeanized kind of orientalism, agrees with them or not.

Rather olfactory tremelo
Well, it's not that boring. But if you have a positive allusion in the field of music in your name, you have great expectations. And these expectations are unfortunately not fulfilled here, even though many commentators already praise this Montale composition in almost highest tones.

Composition in general: I actually only hear two fragrances that set the tone here. On the one hand there are oud and on the other hand rose, as the name suggests. The former comes out extremely softly, the latter, in contrast to the eaglewood, cannot hide the fact that it is artificial in nature or, of course, artificial in nature, so it really does seem quite synthetic. This is a problem that many perfumers experience with quite a few Montale scents.

In 2014, these oud-rose duets may still be quite original, but by now they've almost broken through. Really outstanding are creations that go more in the dark and mysterious direction, like Guerlain's Santal Royal, which saw the light of day in the same year.
That EdP plays almost the same song except for a few different scents, but it seems much more complex, mystical, profound, sensual and also much more qualitative. Almost a small symphony orchestra. I wouldn't say that Aoud Melody looks like a fairground flute, but almost like a kitschy pop song. At least this damned rose brings me to the comparison.

Some elemi-resin, saffron, jasmine and ylang-ylang are also mixed in, but those on their own are so quiet that you can only perceive them remotely.

Ergo Aoud Melody can't really convince me - at least not in this quality. After all, it does not cause olfactory tinnitus.

Announces itself loud and determined (oud and saffron), becomes soon quiet and somewhat indecisive (warm with slightly scratchy elemi note).
