My first Oud ...
Montale's Wild Aoud was a gift from the friend who initially piqued my interest in wearing Oud in the first place. The promotional blurb for this fragrance on the website reads as follows:

"A smoky and diffusing character for this wild and noble Aoud combined with Teakwood, Patchouli from Sumatra and Tobacco, enveloped with Amber under a brilliant and piquant heart of Artemisia, Geranium from Egypt and Bergamot from Italy."

Wild Aoud begins with a shot of candied sweetness, summery citrus and (even though this note is not listed) candied Rose petals! The Oud here is a late arrival and is definitely not of the overly medicinal variety ... finally slightly subdued by resiny woods. I only get a hint of the listed Tobacco in the drydown and the Patchouli is still hiding somewhere, but that's neither here nor there. Wild Aoud is a 'summery' Montale ... something that at the beginning of my now lengthy fascination with this note I would never have expected to find. Being the 'note du jour' that it has become, I'll go out on a ledge here and say that if one truly wants to experience Oud the way it should be handled, there are no better than the fragrances made by the people at House Montale.
I can only conclude that the Geranium listed here is responsible for the 'candied Rose' aspects of this fragrance, more than likely by the addition of aroma chemical Geraniol to the mix, with it's diffusive Rosy attributes. I cannot confirm this, however ... my bottles list only Alcohol Denat, Fragrance and Eau as ingredients. Geraniol does, however, find it's way into most fragrances available today ... just turn the box over and take a look :). Apparently people with fragrance allergies should avoid this chemical ... well, good luck with that!!
I also really love the fact that Montale fragrances come with a usage warning on the package. I wonder if this circumvents the draconian IFRA regulations in the EU to some extent? If so ... I find myself adoring Pierre Montale even more ... real person or not :).

All told, Wild Aoud can be considered a gateway into the wonderful world of Oud. There have been reports of ghastly batch reformulations of late so I would try to find an older bottle ... but that being as it may, this remains one of my favorite Aoud's by Montale.

Wild Aoud
This fragrance opens with an accord that smells of roasted nuts; the aoud note, which is usually very strong, is not yet dominating the fragrance at this point. This soon changes when the aoud note fully blossoms and releases its typical pungent, medicinal smell. The fragrance then needs a while to find its balance, but eventually turns into a beautiful woody and nutty aoud fragrance with a patchouli base. Initially, the patchouli can be smelled only very close to the skin; later on, during the dry down, it gets more intense. This offering by Montale has a darker feel to it than the golden-glowing Steam Aoud. Lasts for more than 6 hours on my skin.

A Designer Aoud?
In the meantime, I can generally distinguish two groups of Oud fragrances at Montale. One part of the fragrances continuously varies and interprets the classic Arabic combination of rose and oud. The other part of the Montale Oud fragrances, on the other hand, tries to combine oud with well-known other fragrance directions. Aoud Forest and Sliver Aoud particularly come to mind here. Wild Aoud also belongs to this second group.

I find Wild Aoud very amusing, as a kind of typical designer men's fragrance has actually been created here, into which oud has been added. Everything is there that belongs to a typical designer men's fragrance - a synthetic citrus freshness in the top notes, even a bit of scratchiness reminiscent of cheap ingredients, and I believe I can perceive light, bright, and indistinct spicy notes, some creaky wood, and indefinable ethereal notes. And then, of course, oud.

However, it must be said with pleasure that Montale has not particularly succeeded in this experiment. They simply did not manage to recreate the typical designer scent; they only imitated it. Mr. Montale probably lacked the knowledge of how to do something like this. Everything reminds one of one of those chic designer fragrances, and yet it is also not quite that. Despite all efforts, everything feels high-quality and noble; why, I do not know. It's like currywurst on Meissen porcelain! Development aid for Douglas victims! Well, why not?

Typical
I have now gotten to know Montale a little. Typical of their scent developments in the Oud theme... the first 1 to 2 hours are unusual and can initially come across as quite unappealing to the wearer. It's no different with "Wild Aoud".

"Wild Aoud" hits you with an intense sweetness, with patchouli and amber dominating so heavily that I feel almost compelled to scrub this Montale off. After 40 minutes, a bit of woodiness comes in, but that sweetness still dominates. I can't really warm up to it at all. But well, as with the Montale that is in my collection, one probably has to wait a while until the full beauty unfolds.

Just like here... after about 1 hour, a balance is established, Oud and sweetness are well balanced. Still, I have a certain association towards chewing gum with a fruity aroma. It has something, but the real wow effect just doesn't emerge here.

Only when the Oud has fully revealed its splendor is it good again. However, I don't quite like the whole foreplay.

I believe that this time it will remain a test. I won't rate the sillage, but I think it will be decent; however, my sample was only in the vial. Longevity is top as always.

A perfume that feels distant from afar!
Also here a thank you to TrueBlood for the sample.

Wow, this is something quite cumbersome! Somehow I feel like I sprayed two contradictory scents on top of each other.

The top note splits into a sweet, almost honey-like note and on the other hand into a herbal-bitter note. This smell reminds me of Ludwigshafen am Rhein, when BASF had once again blown an experiment into the air.

With the heart note, a few floral accords buzz around and intensify the chemical backflash even more. Summer evening in Chemocity! In my mind's eye, memories of long-forgotten situations awaken. The scent seems quite okay from a distance. But directly on the skin, this olfactory antagonism fascinates yet simultaneously repels.

The base ultimately leaves me feeling somewhat reconciled. Wild Aoud has eventually chosen the woody-sweet side. But something still bothers me! I believe it is this impression that the scent has retained a strange accord on the skin.

As we like to say in my hometown when something can't really convince.

It feels distant from afar!

Not bad, but not for me!

Dries down into a patchouli so earthy it almost smells like soil.

The oud part is ok, but something in the "fresh" part reminds me of an old forgotten chewed mint gum. These two don't work together well.

Wild is really just the combination here. Artificial floral notes battling through harsh oud. It feels bulky and scratchy.

Failed stew of bitter herbs, synthetic citrus + something floral. Stir once, add sweetness + 3 drops of oud + the wooden spoon. Doesn't fit.

The "designer fragrance accord" described by Apicius, which Montale tries to imitate, comes from Nikos Sculpture.

Unexpectedly soapy yet beautifully tobacco-heavy. Oud, yes, but here it's rather absent for a change. I really like this one.

It's not wild at all. The beginning is a bit unusually sharp-herbaceous, but then it's a typical gentle floral-oud with a hint of shower gel and ...

It has a bit of woods and spices too. A feel-good scent. It's worth a try.
