The Majestic Dunes of Saudi Arabia
Have you ever been to a Rituals store? Pity! Yes, because entering one of their shops is like visiting a Turkish Bath & Hammam Spa in Marrakech or Istanbul. The soft lights, the display shelves, the relaxing colours, and the smells transport you to the ancestral rituals of Morocco. And so I let this temptation attract me, and I walked around the shop, browsing products to care for the body and perfume the home, until I found myself in front of the exhibitor of the perfume collection, the Iconic Collection as they call it. They display each essence with the only large 50ml size flanked by its colourful box and surrounded by 15ml travel-size mini bottles. That's all? No, there is more. Next to each perfume is a plate describing the olfactory family and three keynotes, and a small glass bell housing a disc of porous material, a sort of ceramic coin. The disc is used to spray the tester and savour the essence. I know that the verb to savour means to enjoy a food or drink by holding it in your mouth to taste it for a long time and make the sensation more pleasant, but the art of savouring the world with your nose is a unique and indescribable experience. I went through all the tags individually, focusing on the ones whose notes sounded good on my strings. Although at least five had caught my attention, only two were love at first sight. I’m talking about Eau d’Orient and Roi d’Orient. Are you curious to know what sensations these fragrances give me? Read on, and I'll try to interpret them. But before I dive into the fragrances, I want you to know that you can buy two travel-size items for just €25, which is perfect for testing before buying.

To some extent, the scent is even more graceful than the Oriental Essence - Elixir d'Orient and retains dusty, nutty, and smoky undertones as spicy and musky tones. Roi d'Orient unfurls with a blast of amber atmospheres. I get an unexpected anise and liquorice vibe in the initial mix, more robust than the spicy white pepper mentioned. A feeble citrusy from the bergamot is present but does not make the opening too harsh.

It gets more and more powdery while approaching the heart. The cologne reveals nutty and rosy edges with a nougat subtlety and sweet amber hints. The more it grows, the more I get the lipstick vibe of the iris, buttery and powdery. The nose behind this cologne went heavy with the Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone molecule but in a good way. That powdery edge lingers until the end of the perfume's lifetime.

Finally, when the scent dries down, it turns a tinge sweet, with spicy and powdery coumarin from vanilla pods or tonka beans, another hidden note that is pretty clear in the output. Although the fragrance features musk on the base, I get more of the leathery facet, which I do not dislike.

If I had to match it with another renowned cologne, I would choose Valentino Uomo or Dior Homme, closer to the former. It is forceful and gentle at the same time. The robustness of its format makes Roi d'Orient suitable for fall and winter months and better during evening and night out. It is so elegant, intriguing, and refined.

That's all for now. I liked this gem and can't wait to try the latest fragrance added to the collection, L'Essentiel.

I base my opinion and review on a travel bottle I have owned since October 2022.

"Hello, here I am!" calls the Roi d’Orient
I hadn't acquired one of the Rituals fragrances yet. The Roi d’Orient. During Advent, I had tested it on a paper strip - but it was a touch too powdery for me, and since I had become a big fan of the "Sultan de Muscat" (also from Rituals) and still am, and the Roi hadn't found a place in the test box, it fell into oblivion for a while. Last week, I decided to replenish my stock of mini bottles of Sultan de Muscat, and this time there was a "third place" in the test box. Then, at the beginning of the week, I sprayed it consciously and directly on my neck and chest for the first time - and - "Wow!"

The Rituals perfumers have finally dared to do something a little different. In the top and especially in the heart notes, it reminds me just a tiny bit of the Lush/Gorilla designers. Well then - this is a scent for the workday and leisure, and yet it has something experimental about it. There's a bit of skunk, much finer than in the Breath of God (BoG), which I was so enthusiastic about a few weeks ago. By no means as brutal, but somewhere in there. There's also that rubber smell. Very multifaceted. Like being in and around a warm hunter's rubber boot after a long walk in the woods. Sniffing inside and at the earthy-mossy-moist tread, mixed with incense - a lot of incense mixed with wilting flower petals - I associate it with wreaths at funerals. Once again, a tremendous experience.

At the beginning, the top note - sweet, a bit powdery - yet (I'm not a fan of powdery scents) something very beautiful. It vaguely reminds me of Versace's "Blue Jeans," mixed with the typical Rituals honey-myrrh base note. However, I can't detect any white pepper at all. More modern and multifaceted than Blue Jeans, it challenges the nose and brain for a long time and yet hides its true face. For a long time, until the heart notes unfold. Very multifaceted. I can't identify the musk. In any case, it's unisex - I would also like it very much on my wife. Floral notes in the heart that I can't categorize. Nothing citrusy. I associate water, forest floor, rubber. I've already described that above. Blue fits perfectly. Not as extraordinary as the Breath of God, but very wearable and still constantly engaging the senses. It has a high presence for me and my surroundings - "Hello, here I am!" calls the Roi d’Orient.

In the evening (about 8 hours after spraying): In the dry down, a mixture of a very fine wood note remains - smells like ship planks - that are regularly exposed to water. Still a bit of honey and this very fine incense, now finer and closely intertwined with the wood. The powdery aspect has faded, as has the floral. Still a tremendous mixture, although the radius has become smaller. The blue is still present. Although blue is not a scent, it describes this cool-earthy-churchy-watery aspect well. Still that hint - a touch - of the BoG and a bit of that smell of earthy rubber boots. Delicious.

Overall: An enormously recommendable scent. Lasts long, engages one's own nose and the noses of those around. A hint of the Lush-Gorilla fragrances but more wearable. Those who like Versace's Blue Jeans will love the Roi d’Orient. Those who have experienced the Breath of God will find here a more socially acceptable dilution.

Finally, one that really blows me away!

I recently discovered the amazing Rituals fragrances and was immediately thrilled, although Roi d´Orient represents the absolute pinnacle of the series for me.

I would even go so far as to claim that this might be the best oriental scent I have encountered so far.
Noble, sensual, mysterious, a fragrance that not only has "Orient" written on it but truly embodies it.

The already mentioned, quite strong similarity to Dior Homme Intense cannot be denied, although without the annoying iris that is absent in RdO; furthermore, this one is significantly spicier, more finely balanced, and (in my opinion) much more wearable.
Longevity and projection are also absolutely satisfactory.

Really great to have discovered a true gem in today's perfume world, which is cluttered with relentlessly overhyped 08/15 scents.

Can Compete with Bigger Names
I absolutely have to write a comment about Roi d'Orient, as this was the first fragrance I consciously purchased and wore for a long time. Even now, as I get to know more and more amazing niche perfumes, this one still ranks among my absolute favorites.

At first, a peppery freshness is noticeable, but over time it gives way to sweet-powdery, spicy, and also subtly woody notes. A very warm and pleasant scent, and so far the only one for which I have actually received a compliment or two.

It fits perfectly with the colder days of autumn and winter, but in my opinion, it can also be wonderfully worn on mild summer nights. For me, it is not just a feel-good scent for home, but it also fits perfectly for going out in the evening.

It will definitely always have a place in my collection, even as more and more significantly more expensive niche fragrances join it.

a scent for harem queens
I was recently browsing in the perfume shops because I was looking for DKNY cashmere noire - (which is no longer available). So I wandered a bit lost among the fragrance bottles - until a saleswoman took pity on me and led me... to the Rituals - roi d'orient.

On Saturday, the top note was wonderful... but the heart of the perfume didn't quite want to open up or faded away far too quickly.
The base note of musk amber lasted only briefly... then there was radio silence.............. a brief flicker of dark velvety almond chocolate still.......

Today I tried it again....
and......... it was love at second...

unisex ... not an absolute male domain - no
the heliotrope greets sweetly - the chocolate is creamy and dark, almost leathery, but not bitter - by no means... also not overly sweet....
it remains noble and dignified - though a bit short... far too short - about 3 hours???

I found this affordable roi d'orient on eBay for 30 euros (Manor 59)

it is a royal cloak for goddesses...

indescribable, noble, and dignified..

the perfume wearer grows into their true potential.... I dare say - this scent makes the wearer a better person...
like beautiful clothes..
the roi d'orient is a beautiful aura dress!
it suits soirées, theater visits, premieres....

Not half bad, after the deeply synthetic opening, that is. Creamy vanilla and heavy yet inoffensive spices, pretty sweet, could be stronger.

Surprisingly well rounded spicy, musky scent with a touch of smokiness. After 40 mins it is mainly musk though. After Not too difficult to wear.

It retains dusty, nutty, and smoky undertones as well as spicy and musky tones. Unexpected anise and liquorice vibe with a leathery tinge.

So far, the best men's fragrance from the brand for me. Spicy, powdery, slightly floral, and lots of musk. It works for women too.
