Not America,
but a late summer in the England of a Jane Austen novel comes to my mind. First, this unusual clove-rose, the image of a wild garden of an old cottage, right in close proximity to the coast, sending a light, salty breeze. It is still warm, autumn is just around the corner, the sweetness of summer has given way to the slightly bitter and amber note of the dry coastal greenery. I think of quiet romance, introverted and unexcited infatuation, adoration of the rose and appreciation of naturalness. Definitely not mainstream.

Montauk is everywhere 2
Uncommented Fragrances No. 121

Montauk is a small town at the eastern tip of Long Island in the USA, known through the eponymous story by Max Frisch. With a bit of luck, the village will become even more famous through the fragrance series "Une Nuit à Montauk" by the manufacturer "Une Nuit Nomade." But that is probably just wishful thinking.

So far, the fragrances from Une Nuit Nomade have received little attention here on Parfumo and are rarely given a more detailed appreciation. The entire Montauk series still presents itself without comment, and even the other fragrances from the brand are not exactly overwhelmed with praise.

Personally, I like almost all the fragrances and I take this opportunity to promote testing this exciting brand. All are easily available through the homepage; especially, there are test materials (two sets) at acceptable prices, which should definitely be consulted before making a blind purchase. The fragrances are idiosyncratic, yet completely easy to wear, so they do not belong to any kind of avant-garde. Here, it is about wearability on one hand, but also about distinctiveness on the other.

All three fragrances feature two common fragrance components (Rose America: Rose and Clove / Memory Motel: Patchouli and Clove / Bohemian Soul, the newest fragrance: Frankincense and Wood), but they set new accents by initially making the combination not so self-evident (e.g., Rose and Clove in a pronounced form: rather rare) and additionally adding notes that are rather surprising in this context.

While Memory Motel connects darker components (Tobacco, Patchouli, Clove), Rose America emphasizes floral accents. However, from the sum of the inconspicuous parts (Rose, Clove, Raspberry: all three base components seem to be well perceivable), something quite new emerges. The rose becomes rough on one hand (through the spicy-bitter clove) and green-fresh on the other (probably in combination with the raspberry). This leads to a somewhat awkward scent profile, which I actually like. Perhaps Rose America is the most inconspicuous and least successful fragrance of the "Une Nuit à Montauk" series, but I still choose the same rating because Annick Ménardo has cultivated an original bloom - and that is truly no small feat.

Rose America is by no means a great success, perhaps even less so than Memory Motel, the other fragrance from this series. Nevertheless, the green, somewhat thorny rose is a beautiful design of a fragrance that connects new paths with old coordinates and thus convinces in a restrained manner.

Dominant carnation note gives the rose some earthy/ medicinal spiciness. Unique take on rose I'm not sure I like.

Sweet and fruity rose, rapidly joined by a spicy quality that reads almost like a gentle smoke layer. Reminds me of shisha. Not a love :(

The forgotten garden: Raspberries with dark-spicy roses and cloves grow on a bitter-earthy ground: enchanting and irritatingly beautiful!

I haven't smelled a complete concept around rose like this before, but the interplay with clove & green-herb freshness is a bit awkward.

Solid fruity aquatic: raspberry sweetness with clove powder before ocean freshness.
Somehow, it actually works.

A cool sea breeze whistling through a rose-covered metal gate.
Water-close rose with metallic clove & interesting green. Lovely base.

Not a cultivated/elegant garden rose, but a wild one exposed to the elements. Aromatic, spicy, quirky, beautiful!

Rose and clove! are well balanced here, accompanied by a slightly metallic skin note. Not my thing, but it has something.

Salty, fresh rose, slightly fruity. Oh, there are also soup herbs in there, hmm, takes some getting used to. But exciting.

For me, it's difficult. The first thing that came to mind was a bathroom air freshener. Bitter rose, synthetic seawater, and laundry musk. It really annoys me.
