'Meh' on it's own, solid when layered
Opens very alcohol-forward and rough around the edges, just like "To My Father" (which is absolutely not unisex). This is a sharp punch in the nose that quickly fades. Very forgettable overall. The one thing I've found that drastically improves the scent is by layering with Clive Christian's 1872 for Men (also a mediocre fragrance on it's own). Funny how two wildly mediocre fragrances can layer to yield something so solid. Without layering: 5/10; layered with 1872: 7/10.

mechanical treacle
Industrial Revolution gourmand. Brass polished with brandy, rubber oiled with honey. Carved mahogany, lacquered in molasses. A clean girl Francis is not. He is dense, heady, smoky, treacly. Sweet but masculine, like a worker bee. And potent. A thimbleful could stun a hitch of Percherons. Unfortunately for me, this scent has too much of a presence and I was crestfallen not to find a compelling pistachio. The closest I can imagine is an empty tin of baklava, now repurposed as a snuffbox. It’s a scent I’d love to waft on a passing stranger, but not hot on my collar.

Mental Snapshot: The most prosperous merchant in all the Citadel. He smokes a fat wooden pipe of the finest tobacco, spiced with the riches of furthest yonder. The brocade waistcoat of a lord, the callused hands of a labourer. If you haven’t imagined a handlebar moustache yet, you’re imagining it now.

tl;dr: savoury Willy Wonka

Most unique release of 2023
In a year where niche perfumery was flooded with cheap designer vanilla and many imitations of (and those taking inspiration from) Ganymede Eau de Parfum, the most unique fragrance release goes to Vilhelm Parfumerie.

Make no mistake about it, the blend quality of this fragrance is not entirely there as the scent smells quite synthetic. But it is the accords being combined where the uniqueness stems from. Pistachio has recently been a very trendy note, but this takes that note in a completely different direction. As the scent first opens in the air, it smells (on top of being synthetic) sweet and aldehydic. The pistachio note is done somewhat well and has a creamy feel to it, but everything else is quite rough around the edges, leaving me with the impression that this scent is structured like a Marc-Antoine Barrois gourmand (of which there aren't any for those wondering).

Up-close the multitude of accords is very much noteworthy. The scent is both woody and rubbery, with the styrax bringing a mild animalic flair and the driftwood adding smoky tones. The aldehyde tonalities have somewhat subsided. The overall scent structure reminds me of something like Écrin de fumée as there are synthetics, there is sweetness, and there is an underlying woodiness. I will note Faces of Francis has little spiciness, so for the comparison to make sense, you'd have to exchange the tobacco note for a woody one to have the comparison make sense.

It's hard to rate this as the non-synthetic wafts of creamy pistachio are great, but I get those every 1-in-10. Therefore, I cannot rate it above a 5.0/10. Expected longevity is in the 8-9 hour range and the sillage is largely moderate (7/10) with potential for strong. If this was done in smoother fashion, it likely would've made top 5 on the year.

The oriental pistachio
Hello my dears, on with my pistachio fragrance journey. With pistachio fragrances, most probably first think of gourmand perfumes, but that it also goes differently, shows my today's fragrance.

Faces of Francis, a peculiar name for a perfume. "Who the hell is Francis?", I thought to myself at first, "and how does the guy smell?". A quick research revealed that Francis means the painter Francis Bacon, no idea how he smelled, but, the research also revealed, the perfume is not supposed to be from him directly, but from his triptychs (for all those who have bummed in art: A triptych is a three-part painting or relief) or inspired by their creative process. Vilhelm Parfumerie focused primarily on the phase in Francis Bacon's life when he was involved in a passionate affair with the pilot Peter Lacy and regularly visited him in Tangier, Morocco. It was during this time that Francis produced his most stirring and emotional works. According to Vilhelm Parfumerie, the perfume is intended to olfactorically reflect how the artist thinks back to Tangier and his love, and then banishes this into a painting.

So much, then, for the art excerpt (sorry, not sorry). I've never been to Morocco, let alone Tangier, so I can't say how well the perfume reflects this place, which for Francis Bacon was linked with so much passion, but also agony. What I can say is that for me, Faces of Francis actually wraps the pistachio not in a gourmand, but oriental garb.

On first sniff, saffron greets you first, spicy but lightened a bit by the aldehydes, not as slaying as it can be. Then comes the pistachio and combines with the saffron to a dry-spicy mix that makes me think of spice bazaars in the blazing midday sun.
As it progresses, the woods come in, in a gentle light expression. At this point, I was already really taken with the fragrance. It is not a loud Oriental, which strides with fanfares and dancers in front of you, but a gentle embrace of delicacies and silk veils that envelop you comfortably.
In the base, it is then again somewhat resinous by oud and styrax, but even here it remains a gentle, bright expression and not so scratchy.

All in all, a great interpretation of pistachio, times away from the pure gourmand fragrance, which has a noticeable and beautiful course. Whether I need a flacon beid em price, I do not know, but as a filling he may definitely like to move in.

Not BR540, but the saffron is screechy. Think Vanille Havane/Écrin de Fumée done woody w/ creamy pistachio & mild smoke.

Another sweet saffron/ambergris a la BR540, but with pistachio and a tinge of smokiness.
