Expensive to start, cheap to run
bugatti is a German fashion brand that sounds like the famous Italian car brand, but has nothing to do with it. Nevertheless, it sits on the shelf next to Jaguar, Bentley and Mercedes-Benz.
Performance Red is apparently a limited edition fragrance from 2023 and is considered one of the brand's best-rated. I noticed it in a local drugstore and sprayed it on a fragrance strip. It smelled good.
Cheap and limited, so bought immediately. That was a mistake.
Because Performance Red starts off really well and smells much more expensive than it is, but then takes an epic dive as it progresses.
The opening is fresh and sweet, with a slight spiciness and a hint of fruitiness. Up to this point, everything is all well and good and you look forward to what is to come. The sweetness comes through after a short time, while the fresh part disappears and is replaced by a powderiness that is not elegant at all, but has a strong synthetic aftertaste. From here, the fragrance becomes increasingly unpleasant as it progresses. The initial positive surprise changes and after an hour you can smell why a 100 ml bottle is available for a very low 2-digit amount.
The contrast between the opening and the progression also makes it difficult to classify. The opening speaks for everyday life and leisure, the drydown for clubs and parties.
But how is the performance (höhö) of the fragrance? Well, unfortunately I'm seeing red here.
The sillage is already quite subtle at the beginning and then continues to fade after about half an hour. After 3½ hours, the fragrance is only skin-deep. But hey, it was cheap, so the re-spray doesn't hurt as much.
The bottle is the most successful, looks quite stylish (although not too spectacular) and is well made.
What am I going to do with my bottle now? Use it up quickly? Sell it? Tip it away? Give it away?
There will be a suitable fate for Performance Red. I could pretend it's from the sports car brand...
