Mystic Woods and Ocean Shadows : Oud & Ambergris Journey
Black Gris opens like a whispered secret—soft, vaguely sweet, with delicate floral hues and a citrusy twist, like the zest of a lime freshly torn. It’s the only sweetness you’ll find here, fleeting and deceptive. Quickly, a sharp, astringent bitterness takes over, more bracing than sour, clashing boldly with the emerging spices that, after a few minutes, seize control alongside the oceanic breeze and the green, raw texture of oud woods.

As the scent unfolds over the hours, it reveals a more resinous, incense-laden heart. Frankincense rises, but it's the dry, salty soul of ouds from Sumatra and Sri Lanka that takes center stage, pulling you deeper into a briny, earthy terrain.

In the drydown, Black Gris becomes stormy and introspective—salty, mineral, tinged with damp earth and a hint of patchouli. The black ambergris comes in waves, generously dosed yet never overwhelming, evoking the charged stillness before a violent storm breaks over a dark, restless sea. The woods darken, soaked by sprays of foam as waves crash against jagged rocks, releasing raw, mineral, and saline notes into the air.

The spices fade into the background, but now and then you can still catch hints of nutmeg, thyme, and pepper—reminders of the chaos beneath the calm.

Wearing Black Gris is like standing alone on a deserted island under an ink-black sky. It’s meditative, haunting, and powerfully evocative. Tough, uncompromising, and shadowy, yet somehow smoothed at the edges, surprisingly wearable for those unafraid to venture into the dark.

Dirty Black Gris
I jumped in, got it... even though some reviews had kept me from doing so (especially the one comparing it to Mallo's Cuba libre, which I own).
This is completely different from Cuba libre, which contains a very dry ambergris blunted by cola accord and lime peel.
Black gris opens immediately with a lot of dirty animalic black ambergris, very mineral, pier effect on the ocean shore. It settles over time (very long evolution) with very clear scents of woody and dry oud, helped by an extraordinary peppery scent. Very perceptible nutmeg with its spicy side, and a mix of flowers supporting the whole. In the long run, a smoky, incensed scent also comes out, which matches the dry aromatic and woody part of the oud and makes it even more beautiful.
It is a dark perfume where oud and mainly ambergris are enhanced and made magnificent by flowers, incense and pepper, black.

An aromatic ambergris
I was afraid that it would be one of those really heavy fragrances, but not at all. Although a large part of the fragrance is composed of ambergris and Oud, the rest of the notes accompany the fragrance, making it versatile and giving it that point of “lightness” so to speak.

Three words come to mind when I smell this; green/aromatic, salty and slightly smoky. The opening is powerful, the ambergris makes a bold appearance, salty touches accompanied by the woods/ouds providing that smoky touch that doesn’t become offensive at any time (Oud Taiwan did get tiring for me, so you can get an idea of my scale).

Little by little this aromatic green touch appears, making the fragrance much more pleasant and versatile. The yuzu, mandarin and orange blossom give it that freshness that in my opinion is key to keeping the experience pleasant. Together with spices such as thyme, cloves and nutmeg, they are responsible for the spicy/aromatic aroma that adorns the "rough" nature of the ambergris and Oud base.

Deep in the Ocean... / First Impression
Hello everyone,

this is a purely personal FIRST IMPRESSION of the new "Black Gris | Ensar Oud / Oriscent", which is why the review will differ somewhat from how I usually present it.

I must say that describing a fragrance from EO is, in my opinion, the true Champions League.

Why?

With every time you "wear" it, new facets emerge, you perceive different accords, and the longer it sits with you, the more it will change in "maturity" - like good wine.

___________

About the fragrance:

It is something "completely" different from what I have known so far. And yes, I know a few EOs and certainly not as many as some here, and I am fully aware of that.

Here’s what I gather!

The initial burst is mineral green, in the sense of algae, plankton, and wet stones on the beach. It is impressive and YES, special,

This "green" slowly fades away, and you begin to feel the full power of ambergris. At first, it smells almost entirely mineral - salty.

After roughly 1 hour, you notice, ah, there’s more = slowly the incense starts to come in, but it’s still in the background, and thankfully it’s not that cold - dry church incense, but it reminds me a bit of the incense used by Amouage back in the day, which is really nice! This is not really sweet, but extremely fitting, and in my opinion, it won’t annoy anyone!

After about 2 hours, the ambergris reaches its peak phase, accompanied by the pleasantly supportive incense.

After almost 5 hours, the ambergris has nearly disappeared, and it slowly takes a little twist, in the sense of earthy (not unpleasant!) - a clean and very gentle oud with a tiny portion of the remaining ambergris creates for me the impression of driftwood or a forest right by the sea.

(I immediately thought of the Ghost Forest near Kühlungsborn...)

And so it ends as in the last stage!

Whether I will get a bottle.... definitely at some point. It is a fragrance direction with which I have a connection somewhere, and it is 0! made to impress the opposite sex or, for example, at family gatherings, etc.

Certain fragrances from the house are works of art, and they should be seen as such in my opinion!

Is it really worth the price?

I find it very difficult and, to be honest, quite ungrateful to evaluate EO based on price, as these are fragrances that play in the Champions League purely in terms of quality.... and let me put it this way (affectionately), yes, one should/ could have smelled and experienced certain ones from the brand, and I see it the same way here, TEST IT and THEN we’ll see further!

I hope I could bring you closer to the fragrance...

And now have a nice day/ evening or whenever you read this review, best regards, Benny
