Barberpapa
If something has sprung up like mushrooms in recent years, it has been, alongside shisha bars, the so-called barbershops. In my quaint little town near Düsseldorf, there have been more than a handful in the center over the past few years. Even long-established hair salons are sticking the label "Barber" on their windows to signal that they want to keep up with the times.
Here, not only are haircuts given, but beards are also skillfully trimmed. Of course, the industry has recognized the signs of the times as well. After all, you can sell more products to a bearded man than to someone without a beard, because such a lush facial hair growth can not only be shaved but also cut, trimmed, styled, and of course creamed, waxed, gelled, oiled, washed, and furthermore perfumed.
The Danish brand Barberians has been in the game for two years, primarily supplying the Scandinavian market and now trying to establish a foothold in Germany. On their website, you can see all sorts of beard care utensils like razors and brushes, as well as beard and hair care products, including the Eau de Parfum No. 01 mentioned here.
Visually, it fits well with its brown light-protected apothecary glass alongside the other Barberians products, and the label is also kept minimalist. For my taste, it's a bit plain - but then again, it’s all about the contents. I should quickly mention that the attached sprayer works absolutely flawlessly and doesn’t drip or drift in the wrong direction. I wish I could see more of that.
But what about the scent? Right from the first rich spray mist, I notice that it does not imitate the typical classic barbershop aftershaves or eaux de cologne, but rather heads fully in the direction of masculine-spicy lemon, yet bitter and with a warm-sensual aura. The naturally occurring opening is certainly very promising. I particularly appreciate the ginger note.
It's a pity that it doesn't stay that way for long, because after a relatively short time, a hint of orange blossom passes by, but more and more our Eau de Parfum gradually drifts into the woody realm of the light, dry, almost dusty kind.
In between, green notes whisper, which could possibly come from moss. Otherwise, the Eau de Parfum itself dims more and more towards the end, making it very difficult to assign the listed ingredients, which doesn’t have to be a flaw.
All in all, Barberians Eau de Parfum No. 1 embodies, in my opinion, the modern, trustworthy interpretation of a barbershop scent. It is citrusy, spicy, warm, and woody with a distinctly masculine emphasis - and done with style. Personally, I would have wished for a bit more radiance and longevity, but perhaps I lack enough hair as a scent carrier with my 5-day beard to contribute to the corresponding odeur.
Therefore: it definitely doesn’t suit milk-faced boys or scruffy lumberjack types, but rather fits perfectly with the stylish beard wearers who almost live in the barbershop.
