Rich, sweet, slightly sharp floral - rose and chocolate
Sampling Jousset Parfums African Queen, a strong, almost heady mix of rose and chocolate, seasoned by patchouli, lemon, almond, jasmine, and tonka. Perhaps it’s the jasmine, but I almost get a sharp violet-like aspect of it that keeps the blend from being overwhelmingly gourmand-leaning. Rather, it comes off mostly like a sweet-and-sharp floral, quite dense and rich but still reasonably accessible, along the lines of something perhaps Mancera has done in that realm. I only list the other contributory notes because they’re list—maybe there’s some sharpness from the lemon or some earthiness from the patchouli, but overall it’s a chocolate/rose-with violet-ish mix.
For me, it’s a “like” not a “love” but nevertheless pretty interesting and certainly worthy of trying. The floral centrality (at least to my nose) makes it lean somewhat to the feminine side (stereotypically) but I could see anyone enjoying this, especially fans of gourmands or sweet florals.
African Queen is sold in the US by Sealed Essence and Luckyscent for $140 for 50ml and the pricing is reasonable enough for niche-quality and good-performing perfume, though I’d surely recommend sampling a bit before buying.
