Nightjar, Curbstone and Back Again
First of all: I don't want to offend anyone or ruin the experience for those who enjoy the scent. This will not be a hymn of praise and certainly not a love letter.
McQueen starts off very prickly, and I must say, there are very few fragrances that annoy me right from the start. The tuberose is exasperating here, coming across as very shrill and exuberant. On top of that, there's a faint scent of stagnant water, paired with a stuffy, moldy air. Jasmine is very intrusive, and over time, the combination of tuberose and jasmine, which also feels quite overloaded, not only causes discomfort but also headaches.
There was an attempt to bring in a bit more pepper, but it gets completely lost under the heavy floral burden. Slightly citrusy, only in the dry down. A synthetic shell that sits like a dome over the whole thing. However, this does not lessen the shrillness. On the contrary, it remains floral, shrill, and overloaded for an extremely long time. Longevity and sillage are high, and I can't tell you how relieved I was when the scent finally faded after what felt like an eternity.
My head was pounding, and I knew somehow, this scent had been around before, but not with such intensity. Soon I had it - it smells somewhat like Madonna's Truth or Dare, although this one feels significantly heavier, and there's a price difference, like day and night.
The price for McQueen is quite steep. The scent is by no means worth it. You can confidently reach for Madonna, who comes across much more restrained and doesn't hit you over the head with a floral club right away.
The only thing I like is the bottle. However, it doesn't match the contents at all, as I would have expected something mystical, strong, and deeply dark upon seeing it. Not at all! Instead, I get a confused nightjar that crashes against the curbstone and then somehow tips itself back up on its heels to move forward.
Much desired, nothing accomplished. What a shame - the bottle seems made for the night, which keeps many secrets and swallows many sins. I was suggested a scent for nightjars, which, as best friends, have the dawn after an intense, drunken night. With an alluring fragrance. But the scent is none of that. The only thing appealing here is the appearance. But as we know, that is not enough to win the heart.
