Myrrh, tonka and lots of lavender
I never gave much thought to this one, until I tried the lovely Zara Starlight Vanilla and found out it was a dupe for Myrrh & Tonka. Naturally I wanted to try the original and see if it would maybe be even better.
Surprisingly, it's not the case for me! Which doesn't mean that this is a bad scent. Not at all, it's good - just a little less sweet and more herbal leaning than the Zara, which isn't as much to my taste.
A very powdery, clean, dry lavender is the most prominent note from afar. When you get closer to the skin, the scent feels warmer and more resinous. At first I thought this was a bit of a misnomer because lavender seemed to be much stronger than myrrh and tonka, but from close up they're actually very noticeable, too. This is a hay-like, herbal kind of tonka, not the sweet, almond-like kind that is found in many other perfumes. I don't smell a lot of almond or vanilla here, even though they are listed as notes. The myrrh makes the scent balsamic, even a bit creamy, which is a nice counterpart to the dry lavender. The overall effect feels slightly leathery at times, which I like, too.
Even though Jo Malone has a reputation of making light and weak fragrances, the Cologne Intense label on this is no joke. The cloud of lavender around this can be a little too much at times. All in all this is a little too heavy on the aromatic notes for me, but otherwise enjoyable.
