Deeper and more resinous than the EDP. Comparison with the EDP.
EDP v Extrait Comparison: The Encens Suave EDP has been a cold weather signature. So, obviously, I’m a big fan. I reviewed it about a year ago and won't repeat what I and so many others have said about how it smells. But with the Extrait version out, I had to compare the two. So, I've now worn both, and I hope I can help an anyone curious about which to get with a one-to-one comparison. Note that the difference between the two is fairly small and, in my opinion, if you have one you really don't need the other. And after two/three hours, the differences diminish between the two. But there are some differences:

Not surprisingly, the Extrait goes on deeper and richer. It's more resinous and fuller. The frankincense is more prominent and richer. If the EDP is like walking by a Catholic church and smelling incense in the air, the Extrait is like sitting in a pew and having a censer swung near you. In my review of the EDP I wrote, "Despite what others often say, I don’t find it that 'church-like,' perhaps because to me 'church-like' would be darker, heavier, more somber. This almost feels sunny...." The Extrait, by comparison, is getting closer to being what I would call "church-like" -- it is darker, heavier, thicker. The EDP is slightlynthinner but also lighter and sunnier. All-in-all, I think I like the EDP slightly better as more versatile and what I'd be more comfortable wearing day-in and day-out. Or to put it another way: it's a bit more fun and less somber. Having said that, (1) I'd emphasize that the comparison between the two is somewhat subtle and (2) I'm still going to get the Extrait. Perhaps with some more time I may get acclimated to its richer qualities. But also because I think it could work well as an evening out scent. And simply because I love the formula of each.

I hope I've provided some comparative help...

Additional observation a month later: I do not know why this is so but the longevity and sillage of the Extrait are decidedly less than the EDP. I've worn it on warm days and cold days and this is consistently true. The EDP lasts on me a good 10-12 hours, sometimes overnight. The Extrait doesn't get me halfway there. Gone in a few hours, with, at best, a skin scent that might linger a bit longer. So, without even considering price, I'd go with the EDP over the Extrait -- if slightly less rich, it wears better and brighter on me, and certainly lasts well longer.

Three month update: even more so than before, I’ve come to favor the EDP. The extrait, in colder weather, largely seems to retreat to just frankincense and now has even less silage. The coffee and vanilla that mix with the incense to make the EDP (for me) such a delight are getting lost. And while I originally considered the two close and the differences subtle, I no longer feel that way. For me, the EDP is easily the way to go.

Frankincense & Vanilla
Encens Suave Extrait from the French House of Haute Luxury Niche Perfumery Matiere Premiere is a Oriental Vanilla Incensed Spicy Resinous Woody Unisex perfume. This is a brand new perfume that has launched at the end of 2024. And the nose behind this fragrance is Aurélien Guichard, also owner of the brand. This new Extrait line, in addition to the increase in the concentration of essential oils, also came with a higher dosage of the main ingredient, here it is an exceptional Somali Incense, and also all came with a new ingredient compared to the original creation in EDP; here at Encens Suave Extrait is a slightly sweet resinous woody amber accord. The Brand also has the practice of informing only some key notes of the fragrance. Another interesting policy of the Brand is the simple presentation [box and bottle], and focus on raw materials of the highest quality. This new perfume offers a more intense, deeper, darker, resinous, and less sweet interpretation than the original, enriching the composition with amplified warmth and complexity.

Encens Suave Extrait is a deep fragrance that opens with a slight bitterness of a dark coffee vapor. But we quickly come to the heart of the composition, and soon there arises a mist of a wonderful incense... a mystical and dark frankincense woody brown in suspension blending with the also golden incense of smoky and sweet benzoin; They snake through a magnificent creamy vanilla adding sweetness and depth. This smoky toasted vanilla permeating the fragrance as a whole, leaves an aromatic background of a delicious melted caramel. Bringing a sweetness in measure with a mouth-watering gourmet accord. From there, towards the base, come the dark resinous labdanum and the elegant and sensual woody amber, warm and slightly sweet, bringing and amplifying a darker, resinous and woody facet, which leaves this version with a richer, more harmonious and less sweet finish than EDP; and fortunately it was exactly what I was looking for at Extrait. Delicious perfume with a very good performance!

rich, comforting incense
Years ago (2019), I tried the EDP Encens Suave when it was released. At the time, I enjoyed it but it lacked a certain bit of extra dimension that would make it stand out amongst a crowd of 'churchy incense-like' fragrances in the category. So, when I noticed the release of the new extrait edition, I wasn't anticipating it to be much different.

As a long-time collector of both incense and amber fragrances, there are very few that give me pause on first sniff. The extrait edition is one of them. Instead of the airy nature of the EDP, the extrait is deep, rich, dense, and powerful. If the EDP is incense burning in an empty church, the extrait is a full house -- the warmth of bodies and humidity of breath filling the space, suspending the incense into a dense cloud in the room, a light sweetness from sweat in the air. There is a degree of sexiness to the extrait that just isn't present in the EDP at all. It's Andrew Scott in Fleabag when he leans in close, clothes smelling of incense and the coffee he brewed earlier in the morning.

While I haven't been reaching for this as much during the warmer months (it can be a bit too dense in the sub-tropical heat and humidity), I consider this my current 'signature scent' if I had to choose one. It straddles the line between incense and amber wonderfully, has a richness and sexiness to it without being too overly sweet or cloying, and performs perfectly -- not so loud that it enters a room first, but doesn't require intimate distance to smell. Longevity is a solid 8+ hours on skin, multiple days on clothes if not washed.

Now to the price. Many mention the extraits from MP are overpriced cash grabs, but we must consider that the pricing is for 100ml of an extrait concentration. At $390 for 100ml, this puts it roughly between Zoologist (at ~$334 for 100ml theoretically) and options like Amouage, with extraits at $520 for 100ml or MFK's 70ml extraits at $475. While this is still not 'affordable' by any means, it isn't anywhere near the higher end of the scale for extrait concentration, so is pretty fair. If I had one piece of feedback, I do wish they offered smaller bottles -- like 30 or 50ml options -- at more accessible price points, but this is also a wider critique of the market in general.

Which to choose? EDP or Extrait? While yes, they share similar DNA and notes, the concentration differences results in a pretty marked difference between how both of these options perform. I would recommend sampling and trying both on skin and seeing which you like better yourself!

BEAUTIFUL... BUT OVERPRICED...
This fragrance presents a classic, churchy incense experience with prominent notes of labdanum and frankincense. In the opening, there’s a mild coffee bean nuance that lingers briefly in the background. The composition is softened by touches of amber and a hint of vanilla, which help temper the intensity of the incense.

The incense itself is slightly smoky, peppery, and woody, with moments that evoke a “cola” vibe — a familiar effect that labdanum sometimes produces with its spicy, effervescent qualities. While well-crafted and high-quality, it doesn’t offer anything particularly groundbreaking, drawing clear similarities to fragrances like Series 3: Incense - Avignon and La Liturgie des Heures

Compared to the EDP, the extrait has more depth, with a greater presence of frankincense and labdanum. The amber base is also richer, and there's less of the coffee sweetness, making it feel heavier and less airy. It is long-lasting and its projection is good, it forms a large cozy scent bubble. Extrait concentrations are naturally oilier, sitting closer to the skin due to their lower alcohol content, which limits diffusion and sillage. In this case, however, the performance is actually better than the Eau de Parfum version. Despite this, the extrait feels overpriced for what it delivers. Ultimately, Encens Suave Extrait is a refined and beautiful fragrance, but it feels like a bit of a cash grab. The differences between the extrait and the EDP aren’t substantial enough to justify the $400 price tag.

Luxurious resins
Maybe I should started with EDP but my journey with Matière Première actually started with extrait series. When I smelled Encens Suave for the first time I've immediately fall in love in this and had to buy a bottle. You can smell high quality ingridients used by Aurélien Guichard. The mix of different resins plus coffee and vanilla makes a rich blend. Encens Suave is one of this fragrances you can't stop smell again and again on your shirt or wrist. I can imagine warm resins covered with vanilla and carmel icing. Price is quite high indeed but look for good promo and just enjoy the beauty of scent. One of my favuorites.

Less sugar, more incense than EdP, but the same DNA: incense, benzoin, and sweet instant coffee, also stronger than recent weak batches.

Opens robust, peppery incense right in your face. As it develops incense is smoothen by resinous amber accord, vanilla and labdanum.

Beautiful, high-quality frankincense and labdanum. Churchy but elegant, with a light sweet coffee note in the background. Overpriced.

About on par with the EDP. There's more focus on peppery incense and amber instead of milky honey, but the two are very much related.

Same core of sweet amber & incense, some parts remind me of wood-working (e.g. sanding some oak). Less sillage than EDP, I'd say poor value.

Better than the edp in terms of being even smoother and more rounded still has some pencil shavings scent in there. Sillage is much better.

The high priest's hair gel makes altar boys swing their incense barrels protectively.
In shock, "vanilla" was also burned.

The name (sweet incense) fits perfectly here. The scent starts off beautifully incense-like, cool, smoky, dark, and has definitely sacred undertones,+
