Lemon Pledge Anyone?...
Monsieur Balmain opens with a sharp blast of semi-sour lemon that is quite like the real juice. The fragrance soon combines the lemon with a sandalwood undertone that grows as the lemon slightly recedes over time. Very modest hints of amber and bergamot are the only other detectable notes of recognition to my nose. Projection is minimal and longevity is above average.

Monsieur Balmain is a very simplistic scent to my nose, at least. While the official list of notes is quite long, it really is all about a natural lemon on a semi-synthetic smelling sandalwood base; nothing more, nothing less. I have heard the scent described by some as "Lemon Pledge," and I confess I too have that same association too. I very much think of a fine lemon wood furniture polish when I smell this one. Lemon Pledge association and formula simplicity aside, the recent formulation of Monsieur Balmain does smell good, and is a superb value at its current street price of around $30 for a 100 ml bottle. I give Monsieur Balmain a "good" 3 to 3.5 stars out of 5 rating.

Monsieur B.'s drastic face-lift
The current version of Balmain's classic "Monsier Balmain" (my bottle is from 2013) is very elegantly presented, but it is no longer the exhilarating, full-bodied lemon-scent it used to be. In the beginning, "Monsieur Balmain" is a sparkling mix of bergamot and lemon oils, but when the initial citrus-notes fade away, you are left with a boring base of artificial woody notes and vetiver and this result is not very inspiring. Right now, thinking of the old version from 1964, those bitter-resinious base notes evoke an enormous sense of nostalgia..."those were the days" (sigh).

The new "Monsieur Balmain" has no power to make a point about its wearer, when the top-notes have faded away, the scent becomes nonedescript. Corrective surgery ruined the face of this handsome Monsieur. Nevertheless, if you love strong lemon and bergamot, the first minutes of "Monsieur Balmain" are full of vivacity. But bear in mind that face-lifts can be drastic.

Glorious Limoncello
I am impressed with the sheer beauty of this citrus scent, one of the best to greet the nostrils, for sure.

Upon application, I am greeted by the most glorious larger-than-life sweet meyer lemon and verbena, with a radiance that puts so many other citrus frags to shame.

The dry down is what sets it apart from others as well, as more of the zest and the rind of the citruses come into play, and a dry smoky vetiver enters the stage, with caraway and thyme shading and darkening into a truly masculine character.

This segues into a more pronounced crisp vetiver, with lilting sandalwood and simmering musks.

I am wearing this in August and it is the perfect time of the year for Monsieur Balmain. Bear in mind, I have the formulation in the lemon-yellow cylindrical bottle in the yellow box.

Monsieur Remain
For a business trip to an information event of a regulatory authority, a stock-serious fragrance is indicated. Therefore, my primary scent choice fell on Vétiver d'Hiver. However, I didn't want to spend the day in Frankfurt without some test candidates. Monsieur Balmain seemed to be a suitable secondary scent in terms of the overall desired appearance.

Rightly so. Relatively mild, meaning: not sharp freshness from bergamot, but mainly lemon. Mint is plausible, and I believe I can detect fresh basil. I willingly dismiss the clary sage, as there is a hint of "gentleman's spice" that develops within the first hour. All of this is on a mossy-foamy clean base with soapy undertones. The fact that the bergamot touches the borderline of being cheesy is not bothersome. Alongside, the citrus freshness persists, so green and leafy that one may speculate about lemon verbena citral.

That’s it for now. The fragrance remains surprisingly stable and thus reveals its central intention: straightforward, well-groomed fresh scent - for hours. For this unwavering persistence, I bestow upon Monsieur Balmain the honorary title of "Monsieur Remain."

Throughout the day, I consequently feel little change. The other spices are clearly servants of the freshness concept and forgo any noteworthy individual profile. The ginger, with its citrus-fresh part, gradually skillfully substitutes the citrus fruit; it takes a long time for the change to become evident - and I must admit I needed the help of the pyramid.

The so-called amber note is as light as it can be; in fact, I wonder if the perfumer secretly used candied ginger instead of any resin chunks while giggling. Vetiver, on the other hand, is well perceivable. It emphasizes the green-fresh direction but does not neglect a hint of its earthy-musty aspects, although I find it difficult to distinguish this from the clary sage. Regardless, all of this does not change the solid, reliable overall impression.

Conclusion: Very successful. My supposed "meh" companion unexpectedly became the main actor, although overshadowing the somewhat pale Vétiver d'Hiver should not be overestimated. Both belong to that type of fragrances that I rarely need, as I can afford to be more original in my office daily life.

I thank MisterE for the sample.

unsour makes funny
Back then, when I started to take an interest in fragrances, Monsieur was one of the founders of my collection.

At the time, I found it "daring" to wear a men's fragrance - nowadays, I would confidently describe the scent as unisex.

It is still my faithful companion in summer, but it also makes a good impression in autumn.
When one is tired and sluggish, it is the remedy of choice.

A whole load of lemons rolls towards you, but pleasantly unsour.
It doesn’t pull the holes in the stockings together - as my grandma kindly says.
Nevertheless, the pronounced citrus note, surrounded by fresh mint, is very invigorating and cheerful.
A pick-me-up comme il faut.
Ginger supports the scent from within, but does not bite - and the pepper is spicy and non-scratchy.
Amber and musk make Monsieur pleasantly round and soft at the finish, so nothing sharp disturbs.
The fragrance also has a nice transparency, without appearing thin, and develops a decent longevity on me.

I perceive this Balmain well on men and women alike, because despite its certain sportiness, it also exudes a portion of casual elegance.
A good, public-appropriate combination.

It was my first Balmain - and it will keep its permanent place in my collection.

Citrus Summer scent somehow lacking the backbone of better blended options due to synthetic nuances.

A pleasant lemony-fresh scent with grass notes. The scent reminds somewhat of ginger beer. Subtle and timeless.

A meaty lemon scent (subtly fine musky-animalic) with a herbal-spicy note: even better in the old version!

1990, when there were herbal fresh lemon balls in the lemongrass bath. When the brilliant daytime citrus softened into a dark green evening.

Classic lemony-soapy-spicy men's scent in the Cologne style. Extra freshness from subtle mint. Well composed, but a bit too old school for me.

Fresh, unsweetened, strong citrus with a light, subtle spice. A very long-lasting, classic summer scent. Highly recommended!

A true citrus bomb, although the bottle used to be more cylindrical and resembled a torpedo. But today, still lemon galore!
