A love it or hate it kind of fragrance
I just ordered this bottle and am still waiting for it to come in, so these thoughts are based on the spray I got on a tester card at Neiman Marcus. When the Memo rep sprayed this frag, I initially did not like it. I'm all about non-traditional scents, but this one in the very opening just did not entice me compared to, say, Ocean Leather or even African Leather. But then I took the card home and smelled it an hour later and loved it. Its strongest note is incense/patchouli, with a hint of leather. It's warm, amber, spicy -- but not as in your face as, say, Maison Crivelli Oud Stallion (that one really punches you in the face). I could not stop getting enough of it. To me, this scent hits the mark on the current stage of my fragrance journey, where I'm looking for mass-appealing but almost exotic scents.
My wife, on the other hand, hates it. She says it smells like someone smoked a huge blunt in the middle of an Asian grocery store. lol I can see that, I suppose -- the strong patchouli note does remind me of the incense all my pothead friends used to burn. But I had to think about it for me to draw that connection.
The only criticism I have is the use of the word "oriental" in the name. I'm Asian -- technically, "oriental" is a derogatory term. Iranians might be fine with being called Persians, but Asians aren't fine with the perpetuation of the term Oriental. I am not offended enough to boycott the brand (obviously, I bought the damn bottle), but I am still disheartened. My hope is that these companies will become better educated culturally.
