Drumroll ... Just for once, it's good to be a Shams.
Shams is the Arabic word for “Sun”.
I guess it makes perfect sense since this fragrance is all about hot and spicy ingredients, mingling together to form a rather attractive masculine.
My friend K had been insisting so much that I test it that I decided to keep it for last.
Not in any way to be awkward, but simply because I was having such an underwhelming experience with the house's offerings that I chanced on the opportunity to perhaps keep the best for last.
Sorry about the wait K xx

The first thing to hit is an energising burst of black pepper nicely supported in its piquancy by a touch of ginger.
It soon goes away and is seamlessly replaced by a complex and wet woody aroma, reminiscent of the cool and pungent undergrowth of a forest during its autumnal phase.

What I specifically enjoy is the unusual choice of incense note here, namely Russian Paper (and not papyrus).
I suspect (and hope I’m not wrong) that it is another name for Papier d’Armenie, a very traditional air purifying method born in the late 19th century whereby a piece of paper soaked in styrax and benzoin and left to dry would be set alight and left to burn out.
Oddly enough, the resulting odour would be a strange mix of charred smoky paper and dusty incense.

Shams could have quickly descended into a potentially problematic stuffy and linear vibe caused by a measurable dose of the above, but thankfully, it is alleviated by the grounding multi-facetted addition of Oud.

Probably wouldn’t wear it, but certainly interesting and I can imagine, rather lush on the right man.

One word to you Memo: Alleluia!

Barnyard
Strong barnyard oud bordering on medicinal. Reminds me a lot of the horrible Dorin Oud. The other notes really do not make an entrance. They are very much in the background. Sillage and lasting power are soft.

A Story of the Missing Oud
To begin with, I’ve sampled Shams Oud in 2018 and since then, it planted a seed in my mind that has finally led me to the purchase in 2022. Back then I was a huge fan of incense-heavy fragrances and incense as an aromatic material itself (I can advise you some incense scents as I’ve tried quite a few of them).

Do not let the name trick you as it is an incense-dominated fragrance. Frankincense plays its solo here, surrounded by warm spices and balsamic notes (I believe it’s Nagarmotha). To my nose, there is a sprinkle of cinnamon in there, however it isn’t listed as a note there (but we all know that the notes are sometimes just pure marketing tricks and very-very subjective). There’s no oud whatsoever, at least it is not dominant note at all.

The scent projects quite well, and stays with you for a long time (perhaps even for too long to my preference). It is a solid winter-autumn scent, if you plan to go out. Do not wear it if you will spend more than an hour in a car/bus/etc. as it might be too much for your nose and kill all the joy of wearing this beautiful incense.

Balsam for a wounded soul
Woody, spicy, resinous and incensy - these four words best describe this fragrance, in my opinion.
Shmas starts very peppery with a hint of ginger in the background. When spices stars disappear (about 1-1.5 hour mark), the smell calms down and more wood and resins appear. It creates an impression that something is on fire, like a burning forest. I mean there are no clouds of smoke, no church, no ash, just the heat of that fire radiating from your skin. When it dries down, the sweet resin becomes more pronounced and becomes balsamic.

Shams is a dry, warm and somehow opulent scent. It has some mysterious aura. It's like a balm for a wounded soul :)

I've had it for a few years now. Even though I have been involved in artistic perfumes for some time (Areej Le Dore, Bornikoff, etc.) and have sold many of my niche perfumes, I still really enjoy my moments with Shams Oud and like to come back to this creation. I think I appreciate it even more now than I did at the beginning of my niche journey.

Some complains about sillage. I have two bottles of this beauty (bought few years back) and after 2 sprays on my neck Shams is with me all day long. In first 4 hours it is very loud.

Désert in bottle

Spicy, nice smooth oud, quite balsamic, smells like an old place. Unusual and quite dry. Sun (shams) and oud in a bottle indeed.

Smoky-resinous spice Rague, where the labdanum provides a moderating melt. Could have been released by Amouage. H&S very good!

The ones from Memo always get me
Light brown, resinous-woody, smoky spice bomb. Plenty of pepper on top and good.
That's how I like it :)

The full resin blast with a smoky tendency and a bittersweet shimmer in the background. It needs cold, otherwise it takes the air away.
