The Pleasant Total Refusal of a Statement
Sometimes it is indeed the greater art to forgo something, to step back, to remain stylishly silent, than to find things good, beautiful, or worthy of support. It is easy to roar, to cheer euphorically, and to feel perpetually at the center of the world. Restraint, simply saying nothing, resting within oneself - that rarely sticks with others.
Exactly this understatement is wonderfully captured by Aigner black. It opens dusty-dry, very serious and dignified; at first, it evokes memories of the completely humorless Encre Noire by Lalique, with a heaviness that almost smells of Kafka's "The Trial" - described as a pencil note in previous comments. Waxen, rigid, strict - this is exactly how Aigner black opens.
Fortunately, it quickly counters its anti-commitment. Where Encre Noire remains humorless and endlessly lifeless about administrative acts, civil procedure codes, and the necessity of sustainable development, Aigner black quickly develops a creaminess, becoming smooth and even a bit cuddly. It remains wonderfully unpretentious, meandering more with the patience of a mid-sized Alpine glacier through the room than becoming loud, intrusive, or Oktoberfest-like in any form.
And the warmth remains as well. No stuffy overheating, no rush to seize nasal contact in five seconds, no ultra-masculine hormonal surge that would need to be twisted into the opposite by excessive sweetness - Aigner black must be worn because one can forgo much. Or simply does not need it.

The more serious, unsweet, leathery variant of "Body Kouros"
Styrax! The first aroma that pushes itself to the forefront upon spraying and shows that it is there.

Aigner's "Black for Men" unusually throws the base notes right at the beginning robustly into the olfactory pathways. The pencil-like, grayish, somewhat waxy-smoky Styrax takes the lead here.

However, quite soon a fine mint accord reveals itself, with a slightly caramel-like to leathery undertone lurking in the background. Here, I am truly reminded of Yves Saint Laurent's "Body Kouros," which I personally find a bit too milky-sweet.

One might get the impression that an unsweet, darker, more nocturnal variant of "Body Kouros" has been attempted. With success, I would say, as "Black" appears quite harmonious in its composition.

As it develops, Styrax and somewhat vanilla-like (tonka bean?) or chocolatey arranged leather dominate the scene, with the subtle mint in the background creating a pleasant tension. At the expense of the gourmand aspects, the leather increasingly comes to the forefront over the hours, becoming more and drier.

Not a bad fellow for autumn and the evening hours, and among the newer Aigners, a good choice!

Return to the Old Class
It's easy to forget that Aigner once had several very good to outstanding fragrances (No. 1, No. 2, Silver, Superfragrance). It's been a while since then, and nothing from Aigner has really convinced me since. "Statement" or "Clear Day" truly lacked the quality of the aforementioned classics. The discounting at Rossmann and elsewhere didn't really help the brand's reputation either.

This fragrance had somehow slipped under my radar until now. I was all the more surprised when I wore it today. It has real class. Dark, noble, and heavy. Despite its distinct spiciness and leather notes, it is very balanced overall. Not too much and not too little of each element. One could almost think this fragrance was a blueprint or inspiration for Lalique. I can smell both the pencil note of "Lalique White" (though without its freshness) and the depth of "Encre Noir" (but without its mysterious aura and sulkiness). A distinct yet not overpowering cocoa/chocolate note also joins in the base.

Overall, a highly positive impression. The heavy bottle is really classy and a real eye-catcher, although (as is often the case with beautiful bottles) not particularly practical in use. It's also easily available at a reasonable price, so - thumbs up! Those who prefer heavier and (almost) unsynthetic scents should definitely give this one a try.

Understatement as an Expression of Self-Worth
Aigner Black for Men is understatement in its purest form. A man wears Grand Seiko. Not because he can't afford a Rolex, but because he has found pleasure in understatement. It’s the stolen, appreciative glance towards the other person and their watch. It’s knowing to appreciate that someone sits here who has taste and radiates it themselves. Not because he lets the watch peek out from under his shirt so that it is inevitably recognized.

Aigner Black for Men is exactly this self-confidence. A man knows who he is. And this fragrance emphasizes that.

The Nice Brother of the Evil Gravedigger?
I received Aigner Black for Men Eau de Toilette as a free addition to a Souk order. Since the ordered samples were initially more interesting to me, it spent a long time in solitary confinement in the sample grab box. Recently, I stumbled upon it again and sprayed it on.

I was quite surprised because the approximately 1ml remaining in the small plastic sprayer with a handwritten label had quite a punch. My nose detects a pleasant mélange of powdery-metallic notes, light vanilla/tonka bean, a bit of dark leather, and also the much-cited pencil notes. The listed citrus top notes are completely absent for me. The progression is quite linear; musk and tonka bean become more dominant while the metallic-herbaceous notes fade a bit into the background. I find the scent very distinctive; I haven't smelled anything comparable until now. The metallic pencil notes (which is probably the styrax) make it seem rather cool and distant, while musk and tonka bean bring it back into balance with their warm, embracing notes. At the same time, any form of sweetness is kept at bay (which I find very positive), and the scent overall feels very dry, yes, somehow also a bit powdery (even though no iris is included).
I also recognize certain parallels outside the fragrance pyramid to "Encre Noire (Eau de Toilette) | Lalique." It could indeed be the more open-minded brother of the black ink, as both scents have a somewhat mystical and dark quality in their own way. However, the Aigner comes across as more positive and pleasing, which is probably due to the musk and tonka bean. The often-mentioned cemetery/sacred notes (cypress + vetiver) of Encre Noire are completely absent here. This makes the scent significantly more suitable for everyday wear for me. The sillage is pleasant (you are noticed but not "blasted"), and the longevity is acceptable for me at 6-7 hours with 4 sprays. Since you can get the 125ml for 25 to 30 €, I didn't have to think long and ordered a bottle.

The bottle is very high quality, heavy, and has an extraordinary design. The cap is made of weighted plastic, and the top is covered with black (artificial) leather embossed with the Aigner logo. Très chic.

Conclusion: with "Aigner Black for Men (Eau de Toilette) | Aigner," you get a special, balanced scent with a fantastic price-performance ratio. If, like me, you prefer classic masculine scents that are a bit darker and drier rather than sweet, you might find this one to be a good choice.

Unusual mix of freshness (citrus) and leather at the start. Becomes leatherier, sweet resinous, and woody. Slight rubber note.

A prime example that a great scent doesn't have to be exorbitantly expensive!
Black leather with a hint of orange and perfectly refined with tonka.

Very positively surprised by this great scent. Soft, a bit "rubbery" like my beloved Bvlgari Black. Good balance of warmth/freshness.

From the bottle to the scent, pure perfection! Why is the production of such a perfume being discontinued? I don't understand...

Leather. Aromatic, confident pine note. Oak moss enhances its character and gives it elegance!
